3 Jan Suraksha Schemes: PMSBY, PMJJBY and APY Completes 11 years
On May 9 2026, Three ‘Jan Suraksha’ schemes, comprising : Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY),and Atal Pension Yojana (APY). These 3 flagship schemes of the Government of India (GoI) were designed to provide affordable financial protection to all, particularly the underserved and vulnerable sections of society.
- These social security schemes were officially launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on May 09 2015 in Kolkata, West Bengal(WB).
- So far, 27.43 crore, 58.09 crore and 9.04 crore enrolments have been done under PMJJBY, PMSBY & APY respectively till April 2026.
About PMJJBY: It is a one-year cover, renewable year-to-year scheme, is designed to provide Life Insurance cover for death due to any reason at a premium of less than Rs 2 per day.
- It is administered by Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), though participating banks or post offices may partner with any life insurance company for its implementation.
- As on April 29 2026, the combined enrolments under PMJJBY have been over 27.43 crore and an amount of Rs. 21,512.50 crore has been paid for 10,75,625 claims.
About PMSBY: It aims to provide accidental death and disability cover for death or disability on account of an accident, up to Rs 2 Lakhs, at an affordable premium of less than Rs.2 per month.
- It is administered by the Ministry of Finance(MoF), and is implemented through Public Sector General Insurance Companies (PSGICs) and other General Insurance companies in collaboration with banks and post offices for enrollment and premium collection.
- As on April 29 2026, the cumulative enrolments under PMSBY have been over 58.09 crore and an amount of Rs. 3,667.52 crore has been disbursed for 1,84,662 claims.
About APY: It aims to create a universal social security system for all Indians, especially the poor, the under-privileged and the workers engaged in the unorganised sector.
- The scheme is managed by Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the overall administrative and institutional architecture of the National Pension System (NPS).
- As on April 30 2026, over 9.04 crore individuals were enrolled in the scheme.
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel Inaugurated IALFS 2.0 in GIFT City, Gandhinagar
In May 2026, Bhupendrabhai Rajnikant Patel, Chief Minister (CM) of Gujarat, inaugurated the second edition of India Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit (IALFS 2.0) held at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
- The summit was organised by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), in partnership with the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).
Key Highlights:
Presided by: IALFS 2.0 was presided by Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, MoCA.
Key Target: While addressing the inaugural session, Union Civil Minister Naidu highlighted that India is set to emerge as the world’s 3rd-largest civil aviation market by 2035, with an estimated fleet of nearly 2,250 aircraft.
- He further announced that seaplane operations will soon start in Union Territory (UT) Lakshadweep.
Release of Report: Also, KPMG in partnership with MoCA and FICCI announced the release of its latest report titled “Advancing the aircraft leasing ecosystem in India- From reforms to powering future growth”.
MoUs: fAlso, several other MoUs were signed among IFSCA, FICCI. Air India, IndiGo, Star Air, Bank of India (BOI), and Akasa Air.
MoHFW Launches JANANI Platform to Strengthen Maternal and Child Healthcare Digital Monitoring System
In May 2026, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched the JANANI platform (Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care) during the 10th edition of the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity held in Chandigarh.
- Introduced as an upgraded version of the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, the platform aims to create a Longitudinal Digital Record System (LDRS) for women across reproductive stages.
About JANANI platform:
Coverage: The platform provides end-to-end tracking of antenatal care, institutional deliveries, postnatal and newborn care, family planning services, and home-based child healthcare.
Features: Key features include Quick Response (QR)-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, due-list generation, real-time dashboards, self-registration through web and mobile platforms, pan-India search for migratory populations, and Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) and biometric authentication.
Integration: The system is integrated with U-WIN (Universal Immunisation Web-enabled Network), POSHAN (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment), and Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) platforms to support interoperable digital healthcare services.
Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya Launches Nationwide Health Check-up Initiative
In May 2026, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoL&E) and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), launched Nationwide Annual Health Check-Up Initiative at Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College & Hospital, Basaidarapur, New Delhi, Delhi.
- Kapil Mishra, Minister of Labour & Employment (MoL&E), Delhi, and Ashok Kumar Singh, Director General (DG) of the ESIC were present at the event.
About Nationwide Health Check-up Initiative:
Free Health Screening: The initiative offers free annual health check-ups for workers aged above 40 years at ESIC hospitals across India.
Framework: The programme has been launched under the four New Labour Codes to strengthen workers’ welfare and social security coverage.
Focus: The initiative focuses on early disease detection, preventive healthcare, and timely medical support for workers.
Support: Treatment and medicines identified during the health camps will be provided through ESIC facilities.
CSIR-CRRI & BPCL Develop India’s 1st Plastic Waste Geocell ‘Phoenix’
In May 2026, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research –Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), in collaboration with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), developed and demonstrated ‘Phoenix Geocell, India’s first technical textile geocell made entirely from end-of-life mixed plastic waste.
- The innovation received recognition from the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records, during the ceremony held at the Auditorium, CSIR-CRRI, in New Delhi, Delhi.
About Phoenix Geocell:
Technology: It is a three-dimensional honeycomb-like structure made entirely from processed mixed plastic waste.
Working Mechanism: The geocell is filled with soil, gravel, or sand to improve structural integrity, road durability, and soil stability.
Applications: It is used in road construction, weak soil stabilisation, and slope protection.
Pilot Project: A demonstration project was conducted on July 11, 2025, at the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway(NH-148NA) near Delhi with support from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
IndiaAI & ICMR Sign MoU to Promote Responsible Use of AI in Healthcare
In May 2026, IndiaAI, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the responsible use of Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and strengthen AI-driven public health innovation in India.
Key Highlights of MoU
Objective: The MoU aims to build a unified and interoperable AI ecosystem for healthcare by combining IndiaAI’s technological infrastructure with ICMR’s biomedical expertise and health datasets.
IndiaAI Role: IndiaAI will provide compute infrastructure, dataset platforms, and ecosystem-building support.
ICMR Role: ICMR will contribute biomedical expertise and curated healthcare datasets under the Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework.
AIKosh platform : It will share anonymised and ethics-approved health datasets, AI models, and toolkits on the AIKosh platform to support researchers, startups, and innovators.
NIScPR Sign MoU with RIS to Strengthen STI Policy & Diplomacy
In May 2026, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research -National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research CSIR-NIScPR) under the , Ministry of Science and Technology(MoS&T), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) under Ministry of External Affairs(MEA), in New Delhi, Delhi.
- The agreement aims toto strengthen collaboration in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) policy research and science diplomacy.
Key Details of MoU:
Dignitaries: The agreement was signed in the presence of Prof. Sachin Kumar Sharma, Director General(DG), RIS; Dr. Geeta Vani Rayasam, Director, CSIR-NIScPR and others.
Focus Areas: The partnership will focus Global South on working groups and joint publications work in science policy, communication, diplomacy and traditional knowledge, along with joint projects, publications, policy dialogues, workshops and outreach for inclusive and sustainable development.
Joint Initiatives: Both organisations will jointly conduct conferences, workshops, training programmes, and policy dialogues.
Global Engagement: The partnership seeks to enhance India’s presence in global science & technology governance and South-South cooperation.
MoF Empowers Principal Bench of GSTAT as NAAAR Effective from April 01, 2026
In May 2026, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) through official notification empowered the Principal Bench of Goods and Services Tax (GST) Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), New Delhi (Delhi) to act as the National Appellate Authority for Advance Rulings (NAAAR).
- As per MoF, the notification will come into force on April 01, 2026 and President of the GSTAT will act as the Presiding Officer of the NAAAR
Key Details:
Notified Under: MoF, on the recommendations of the GST council, issued the notification under sub-section (1A) of Section 101A of the Central GST (CGST Act, 2017).
Mandate: The Principal Bench of GSTAT as NAAAR has now been mandated to resolve disputes involving divergent advance rulings across various States and Union Territories (UTs) under section 101 B of the CGST Act, 2017
Principal Bench of GSTAT Tribunal: It was constituted under sub-section (3) of Section 109 of the CGST Act, 2017.
- The tribunal comprises the President, a judicial member and two technical members (each from the central government and state government).
BIS hosts global meet on Space Systems Standards in Delhi
On May 2026, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, under the Department of Consumer Affairs(DCA), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution(MoCAF&PD) organised the 35th Plenary and Working Groups meetings of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 20 / Subcommittee (SC) 14 ‘Space Systems and Operations’ subcommittee of ISO for the first time at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, Delhi.
- The event witnessed participation of 131 international delegates from 13 countries representing National Standards Bodies, experts from International Space Agencies including ISRO from India, Space Industry, and Academia from May 4–8, 2026 to discuss global standards for space systems and operations.
Key Details of the Event:
Objective: Hosting this international meeting highlights India’s growing role in the global space sector, supported by the achievements of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and increasing private sector participation through reforms under Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
ISO/TC 20/SC 14: It develops international standards for space systems, covering design, production, launch, operations, and space-based services to ensure safety, compatibility, and sustainability in global space activities.
Impact: Rapid growth of India’s space sector driven by policy reforms and private sector participation, and stressed the importance of standards in promoting innovation, quality, safety, and global competitiveness.
BANKING & FINANCE
RBI Imposes Penalties on YES Bank, Hinduja Housing Finance
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 33.60 lakh on YES Bank Limited, and Hinduja Housing Finance Limited for lapses in regulatory compliance.
Key Reasons for Penalties:
Non-Compliance with KYC: RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 31.80 lakh on YES Bank due to its failure to comply with certain provisions related to ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) norms.
- RBI further highlighted that the concerned bank failed to put in place a system of using KYC identifiers assigned by Central KYC Records Registry for the purpose of establishing an account-based relationship with customers.
Non-compliance with RBI directions: Also, A monetary penalty of Rs 1.80 lakh has been imposed on Hinduja Housing Finance Ltd., under Section 52 A of the National Housing Bank (NHB Act, 1987) for its failure to comply with certain directions issued by RBI, relating to ‘governance’.
APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS
GoI Appoints Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as Next CDS; Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as CNS
In May 2026, the Government of India (GoI) appointed Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) (Retired) NS Raja Subramani as the 3rd Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), with effect from May 30, 2026, succeeding Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on the same date.
- Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was appointed as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of Indian Navy (IN) and will assume charge on May 31, 2026, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who retires on the same date.

Bulgaria parliament approves Rumen Radev as new Prime Minister

Initiative: The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) initiated the observance of 8 May as ITD.
Establishment: Panos Englezos, founder and president of the TIF, established the inaugural World Thalassaemia Day on 8 May 1994 in memory of his son, George Englezos, who died due to thalassaemia.
Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War 2026 – 8-9 May
The United Nations (UN) recognised Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War is annually observed worldwide on May 08 to May 09 to honour all victims of the Second World War (WWII) (1939–1945). The day aims to promote global peace & security and encourage reconciliation & dialogue among countries that were once at war.
- The year 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War (WWII).
Background: On 22 November 2004, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/59/26 which proclaimed May 08-May 09 as Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War.
- Later, the UNGA passed two resolutions: A/RES/64/257 on March 02, 2010 and resolution A/RES/69/267 (in 2015), reiterating the significance of commemorating WWII victims and promoting human rights, democracy, and reconciliation.
1st Observance Day: The first observance of the day was observed in 2005, marking the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII and the 60th anniversary of the UN.
