MoEFCC and NBA Launch 5-Year Project on Grassroots Biodiversity Governance in TN and Meghalaya
In April 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), in collaboration with the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), launched a five-year project titled ‘Strengthening Institutional Capacities for Securing Biodiversity Conservation Commitments’ to be implemented in the Sathyamangalam landscape of Tamil Nadu (TN) and the Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
About Grassroots Biodiversity Governance Project:
Support: The project is supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with a grant of USD 4.88 million for 2025–2030.
Objective: The project integrates biodiversity into Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs), strengthens Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), and promotes community-led conservation with sustainable livelihoods.
Financing: The project activates Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and green micro-enterprises to link conservation with livelihoods and economic incentives.

Six Border Villages in J-K Included Under Vibrant Village Programme-II
In April 2026, the Government of India(GoI) announced the inclusion of six strategically located border villages in Jammu and Kashmir(J&K’s) Kathua district under the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP–II), aimed at boosting development and improving living conditions in remote frontier regions.
Key Details:
Selected Villages: The villages, Bobiya, Kadyala, Gajnal, Karol Krishna, Rathua, and Gujjar Chak, located along the International Border were identified during a meeting chaired by Rajesh Sharma held in Kathua, J&K.
Background: The VVP was launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA). to develop border villages and reduce out-migration from India’s remote frontier areas.
VVP-II: In April 2025, The union cabinet has approved 2nd phase of Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP-II) with total budget outlay of Rs 6,839 crore, for the comprehensive development of the villages located in the blocks along all International Land Borders (ILBs), other than Northern border already covered under VVP-I.

DRDO Unveils Advanced Armoured Platforms (Tracked & Wheeled) in Maharashtra
On 25 April 2026, Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D) and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), unveiled the Advanced Armoured Platforms (Tracked and Wheeled), at the DRDO laboratory in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, to enhance mobility, firepower, and protection for the evolving needs of the Indian Armed Forces.
About Indigenous Advanced Armoured Platforms:
Overview: The platforms were unveiled for the Indian Army (IA) as part of the Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programme to replace ageing BMP-2K Sarath Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs).
Indigenous Development: These platforms have been designed and developed by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with 65% indigenous content, which is planned to increase to 90% in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.
Manufacturing: Produced by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Bharat Forge Limited (BFL) with support from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), strengthening the defence industrial ecosystem.

IITM Pune Inaugurates X-Band Doppler Weather Radar at Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra
On April 2026, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), at Pune, Maharashtra under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), officially commissioned X-Band Dual-Polarization Doppler Weather Radar(DWR) at its High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra.

  • This installation comes under Mission Mausam, the government’s multi-year initiative to transform India into a Weather-Ready Nation.

About Doppler Weather Radar:
Location & Function: Installed at an altitude of around 1,400 metres(m) in the Western Ghats, the radar acts as a ‘weather eye in the sky,’ enabling real-time tracking of rainfall, cloud movement, and storms.
Monitoring & Forecasting: The system will monitor rapidly changing weather conditions in Mahabaleshwar, enabling the study of orographic rainfall and monsoon dynamics, while enhancing nowcasting (up to 3 hours) for regions including Satara, Pune, the Konkan region, and Mumbai.
Advanced Radar Capabilities:Operating at 9.45 gigahertz (GHz) with solid-state amplifier technology, the system ensures reliable, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient performance, while its dual-polarization and high-resolution features enable precise analysis of precipitation, cloud structures, and improved weather forecasting.
Collaboration: On the occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IITM and the Space Applications Centre (SAC) of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to jointly develop advanced satellite-based meteorological products.

MSJE Launched SMILE–Beggary Survey Mobile App During Chintan Shivir 2026
In April 2026, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) launched the SMILE (Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise)–Beggary Survey Mobile Application (App) during the Chintan Shivir held in Chandigarh (Punjab) from 24–26 April 2026.

  • The SMILE–Beggary initiative under the SMILE Scheme (2021–2026) of MSJE supports rehabilitation through shelter, skills, and reintegration, with a mobile app enabling real-time data collection and monitoring.

About SMILE–Beggary Survey Mobile Application:
Features: The application enables real-time data capture, geo-tagging, hotspot mapping, analytics dashboards, and end-to-end monitoring from identification to rehabilitation.
Coverage: Expanded to 181 cities, the initiative creates a centralised national database for identifying vulnerable populations and improving policy planning.
Process: It records demographic and socio-economic details and links beneficiaries to shelter homes, healthcare, counselling, de-addiction, skill training, and reintegration services.
Integration: It is supported by model shelter home guidelines and complemented by the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) 2.0 App, which aids drug demand reduction and provides access to Mental Health and Normalcy Augmentation System (MANAS).

Knight Frank’s Wealth Report 2026: USA Topped; India Ranks 6th in Ultra-wealthy Population
In April 2026,  Knight Frank, global property consultant firm, released the 20th edition of ‘The Wealth Report 2026’. As per the report, India ranked 6th position globally with estimated 19,877 Ultra-High Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWIs) and 207 billionaires in 2026, which accounts for 2.8% of the world’s ultra-wealthy population, up from just over 2% 5 years ago.

  • The number of UHNWIs and billionaires in India is projected to increase by 27% (to 25,217) and 51% (to 313), respectively, by 2031.

Key Findings:
UHNWIs: Globally, the number of UHNWIs increased from 551,435 (in 2021) and 713,626 (in 2026) indicating to nearly 89 new UHNWIs being created every day over the last 5 years.
Top 5 Wealth Market: As per the report, the United States of America (USA) continued to be the world’s dominant wealth market, with 251,352 UHNWIs in 2026, followed by China (121,677 UHNWIs), Germany (38,215), and the United Kingdom (UK) (27,876).
India-Specific: The report revealed that the number of billionaires in India increased 58% over the last 5 years  to 207 in 2026, which makes it the 3rd-largest globally, after the USA (914), and China (485).

FM Nirmal Sitharaman delivers Keynote & Launched Mission Jagrook at 38th SEBI Foundation Day
In April 2026, the Union Minister Nirmal Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs (MoF&CA) delivered the keynote address at the 38th foundation day programme of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Key Highlights
Cyber Risk warning: The Union Minister urged SEBI to stay highly alert against rising cyber threats, warning that a single major attack on exchanges can destabilise markets at a national scale.

  • The minister asked SEBI to expand investor awareness campaigns across digital platforms and regional languages to ensure wider protection.

Mission Jagrook: The Union Minister launched Mission Jagrook, a nationwide investor awareness campaign aimed at protecting retail investors from misinformation, fraud and manipulative financial content.
Investor Protection: The minister also appreciated SEBI for its action against unregistered fin-fluencers, highlighting the importance of controlling misleading financial advice.

RBI Approves Reappointment of B Ramesh Babu as MD & CEO of KVB
In April 2026, the Reserve Bank of India(RBI) approved the re-appointment of B. Ramesh Babu as Managing Director(MD) and Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Karur Vysya Bank (KVB) for a third two-year term from July 29, 2026, to July 28, 2028.

  • He has been leading KVB since 2020, succeeding P. R. Seshadri.

About B. Ramesh Babu:
Profile: With extensive experience in the banking sector, he has emphasized retail expansion, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) lending, and prudent risk management practices.
Key Roles: Before joining KVB, he served as the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) & Chief Operating Officer(COO) at the State Bank of India (SBI).
Other Key Positions: He serves as a Member of the Managing Committee and Alternate Chairman of the Corporate Credit Committee at the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), and is also a Director at the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF).
Achievement: KVB took 104 years to reach its first Rs.1 trillion in total business, Ramesh Babu added the second Rs. 1 trillion in just 4 years.

India Tops Medal Tally with 16 Medals Including 5 Gold at ISSF Junior World Cup 2026 held in Cairo, Egypt
In April 2026, the Indian Junior Shooting Team finished on top of the medal standings at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun 2026 held in Cairo, Egypt, from 19-27 April 2026, securing a total of 16 medals (5 Gold, 6 Silver, and 5 Bronze).

About ISSF Junior World Cup 2026:
Events: The ISSF Junior World Cup 2026 season comprises two legs: Cairo, Egypt, featuring rifle, pistol, and shotgun events, and Porpetto (September 12–20, 2026), dedicated exclusively to shotgun (trap and skeet) events.
Participation: The 2026 edition featured 284 shooters from 25 federations, with India fielding the largest contingent of 71 shooters.

India to host SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 in Goa
In April 2026, the South Asian Football Federation(SAFF), announced that India is set to host the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026, the premier regional tournament, scheduled to take place from May 24 to June 7, 2026 at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (Fatorda) Stadium in Margao, Goa.

  • This marks India’s first time hosting the SAFF Women’s Championship since 2016 in Siliguri, while Goa previously hosted a SAFF event during the men’s championship in 1999.

About SAFF Women’s Championship 2026:
Background: The tournament, held approximately every two years since its inaugural edition in 2010, was last conducted in 2024 in Nepal, where the hosts lost the final 2–1 to Bangladesh.

Padma Shri Awardee and Photojournalist Raghu Rai Passed Away
In April 2026, Veteran photographer Raghu Rai, known as the ‘Father of Indian Photojournalism’, passed away at the age of 83 in New Delhi, Delhi. He was born on 18 December 1942 in Jhang, Punjab Province, British India(now Pakistan).

  • He was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 1972 in the field of art.

About Raghu Rai:
Career: Originally trained as a civil engineer, he started his professional career with The Statesman in 1966, where he chronicled major national events through his photography.
Iconic Work: In 1977, he became the first Indian photographer nominated to Magnum Photos by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

  • He created powerful portraits of figures such as Mother Teresa, Dalai Lama, Indira Gandhi, and Satyajit Ray, and captured defining moments like the Bangladesh Liberation War(1971) and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy(1984).

Awards & Recognitions: He received several prestigious honours, including Photographer of the Year (the United States of America, USA, 1992), the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (France, 2009), the Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and the Académie des Beaux-Arts Photography Award (2019).

Spiritual Leader & Padma Shri Awardee Guru Muni Narayana Prasad Passed Away
In April 2026, Renowned spiritual leader and Padma Shri awardee, Guru Muni Narayana Prasad, head of Narayana Gurukulam, passed away in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam at the age of 87. He was born on December 9, 1938, in Thiruvananthapuram.

  • He was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2024 in the field of Literature & Education.

About Muni Narayana Prasad

Literary Work: Over the decades, he authored around 130 books in Malayalam and English, covering Vedanta, philosophy, and religion, including detailed commentaries on major Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.
Global Engagement: He participated in a world religious leaders’ meet in Moscow in 1987 and headed the Gita Ashram in Fiji from 1989 to 1991.
Honours:  He also received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award twice, in 2015 and 2018.

UN’s First Ever International Day of Women in Industry 2026 – April 21
The United Nations (UN’s) first-ever International Day of Women in Industry (IDWI) was observed across the globe on 21 April 2026 to recognise women’s contributions to industrial development and promote gender equality in global industry.

  • 2026 Theme: “Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Industrial Development”

Background:
Declaration: In 2025, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) proclaimed 21 April as IDWI through a landmark resolution adopted at its 21st session of the UNIDO General Conference during the Global Industry Summit 2025 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with support from Member States.
Establishment: The date 21 April was chosen to mark both UNIDO’s commitment to gender equality and the anniversary of its first Gender Policy entering into force in 2009, embedding gender equality into industrial development.
2026 Event: The inaugural observance was organised by UNIDO at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria, featuring high-level sessions, panel discussions, the “ELLEvate – Women Shaping Industry” exhibition, and the Gender Equality Mobilization (GEM) Award ceremony.

World Malaria Day 2026 – April 25
World Malaria Day (WMD) is observed every year on April 25 worldwide to spread awareness, mobilize resources, and encourage coordinated efforts for the prevention, control, and eventual elimination of malaria.
