Background:

Declaration: In 2021, the Government of India (GoI) designated 23 January, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, as Parakram Diwas to honour his contributions to the Indian independence movement.

First Observance: The first Parakram Diwas was celebrated on 23 January 2021.

About Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose:

Birth: Subhash Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 at Oriya Bazar in Cuttack, in the Orissa Division of the Bengal Presidency (now Odisha).

Congress: He joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1921, played a key role in the freedom movement, and served twice as its President in 1938 and 1939.

Revolution: In 1939, he formed the Forward Bloc to unite anti-British forces, and in 1942, the Indian National Army (INA), also known as Azad Hind Fauj, was formed in Southeast Asia with Japanese support, with Bose becoming its Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) in June 1943.

Government: On 21 October 1943, he established the Provisional Government of Free India, which was recognized by nine countries, including Germany, Italy, Japan, and Myanmar.

Honorary Titles: He was called “Netaji” by INA soldiers and officials in Berlin (1942) and “Desh Nayak(Hero of the Nation).” by Rabindranath Tagore.

Demise: He passed away in August 1945 following a plane crash in Taiwan.

Event 2026:

Overview: On January 23, 2026, the Ministry of Culture, is organizing Parakram Diwas–2026 from January 23 to 25, 2026, at Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands, to commemorate the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Chief Guest: Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.), Lieutenant Governor (LG) of A&N Islands.

Highlights: The celebration features a spectacular drone show, performances by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Shri Papon, a theatrical tribute by National School of Drama (NSD), and exhibitions at India Tourism Fair (ITF) Ground showcasing Netaji’s rare visuals and history.

Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2026:

On 23rd January 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs, (MHA), announced the recipients of the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2026 in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of Disaster Management.

Awardees:

  • Institutional Category: Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA)
  • SSDMA, established in 2005, deployed 1,185 Aapda Mitras, aided rescue in the 2016 Mantam landslide and 2023 Teesta floods, and built a scalable community-focused disaster resilience model.
  • Individual Category: Lieutenant Colonel Seeta Ashok Shelke, Indian Army (IA).
  • Lt Col Seeta Ashok Shelke led 2024 Wayanad flood relief, restoring connectivity with a Bailey Bridge, mobilising 150 tons of equipment, and training 2,300+ personnel in disaster response.

About Award: Announced annually on 23 January since 2022, carrying Rs. 51 lakh and a certificate for institutions, and Rs. 5 lakh and a certificate for individuals.
