Sabarmati Ashram: Friedrich Merz and PM Narendra Modi visited the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad(Gujarat), the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation and paid floral tributes.
International Kite Festival: Friedrich Merz and PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026, held from January 10 to 14, 2026, at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad as part of Gujarat’s traditional Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti celebrations.
Bilateral Engagements: Both leaders held a high-level bilateral meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, to review the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, which has recently completed 25 years.

NITI Aayog’s 4th Export Preparedness Index 2024: Maharashtra Tops Large States; Uttarakhand Tops Smaller StatesIn January 2026, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog released the 4th edition of the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024 a comprehensive assessment of the export readiness and performance of Indian States and Union Territories (UTs) at an event held in New Delhi, Delhi.

• Maharashtra has emerged as the top-ranked large state with 68.01 Score, followed by Tamil Nadu (TN) with 64.41 and Gujarat with 64.02, while among the smaller states, Uttarakhand holds the top position with 52.07, followed by Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) with 51.08  and Nagaland with 46.42

About Export Preparedness Index 2024:
Edition: The 2024 report is the fourth edition of the EPI, while its inaugural edition was launched in August 2020.
Methodology: Export performance for Financial Year 2021-22 (FY2022)–FY 2024 is assessed using an indicator-based, normalized, and weighted methodology, enhanced in 2024 for greater robustness, comparability, and policy relevance.
Objective: Promotes competitive federalism, evaluates export performance and potential, and helps states identify structural gaps in their export ecosystems.
Grouping: States and UTs are divided into Large States, Small States, North Eastern States, and UTs.
Categories: Entities are classified as Leaders (high preparedness), Challengers (moderate preparedness), or Aspirers (early-stage ecosystem development) within their peer groups.
Purpose: Provides an evidence-based tool to support India’s goal of USD 1 trillion in merchandise exports by 2030.
Pillars: The EPI 2024 is structured around 4 pillars, 13 sub-pillars, and 70 indicators.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah Unveiled Over Rs 629 Crore Development Projects in Mansa, GujaratIn January 2026, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects worth over Rs 629 crore under the Mansa Municipality, covering Mansa and parts of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Key Projects Launched in Ahmedabad:
Sports Infrastructure Initiative: He inaugurated a state-of-the-art sports complex in Mansa, constructed at a cost of Rs 267 crore, as part of efforts to develop the region into a world-class sports hub with preparations aimed at hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.
Civic Infrastructure Upgrade: He also inaugurated Mansa’s underground sewerage system and a new fire station, significantly enhancing the town’s urban civic services.

Australia’s University of New South Wales to Set Up New Campus in Bengaluru by August 2026
In January 2026, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), one of the leading universities in Australia, announced its plan to establish a new campus at Manyata Tech Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka, by August 2026.

• The announcement followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Prof. Attila Brungs, UNSW and Dr. S. Selvakumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries, Government of Karnataka, during a programme held at Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru.

Key Programmes: For the initial phase, UNSW will offer Under-Graduate (UG) programmes in commerce, media, computer science, and data science, along with a Post-Graduate (PG) programme in cybersecurity.
Future Plans: UNSW is planning to set up a campus at the upcoming Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City near Bengaluru.
Alignment: The initiative is aligned with the broader India–Australia Education and Research Cooperation Programme (2025–2030).

ICAR Signs MoU with NDDB to Boost Research and Innovation in Dairy Sector
In January 2026, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare(MoAFW), signed  a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), aimed at enhancing collaboration in multidisciplinary research, innovation, and capacity building across the entire dairy sector.

• The MoU was signed by Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Deputy Director General (DDG)(Animal Science), ICAR and S. Regupathi, Executive Director (ED) (Operations), NDDB in New Delhi, Delhi.

Aim: The newly signed MoU aims to combine scientific and research expertise of ICAR with NDDB’s extensive field-level experience and strong institutional capabilities to address emerging challenges in the dairy sector.
Focus Areas: This strategic partnership covers key areas like dairy production, processing, and value addition, with special focus on empowering its primary stakeholders.

MIB and PSA Launches ‘Inspiring Innovators’ Skilling Initiative with Netflix
In January 2026, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) in partnership with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India(GoI) and Netflix Fund for Creative Equity , launched the ‘Inspiring Innovators – Naye Bharat Ki Nayi Pehchaan’, a skilling initiative.

About ‘Inspiring Innovators – Naye Bharat Ki Nayi Pehchaan’:
Implementor: The initiative was implemented in collaboration with Graphiti Studios, the initiative connects India’s innovation and creative ecosystems, fostering socially relevant innovation through storytelling and practical skilling.
Features: The initiative features eight short animated films, created by students from eight universities across India, highlighting the work of eight Indian start-ups identified by the PSA for their contributions to social-impact innovation.
Training and Mentorship:  A cohort of 26 students from diverse regions, with women representing 50% of participants, gained hands-on experience and mentorship from industry experts, while their voiceovers were produced through Voicebox, a Netflix-led skilling initiative in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

TN Partners with Sarvam AI to Establish India’s First Sovereign AI Park in Chennai
On 13 January 2026, the Government of Tamil Nadu (TN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarvam AI to establish India’s first full-stack Sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) Park in Chennai, TN.

About India’s First Sovereign AI Park:
Investment: The project will receive an initial investment of around Rs.10,000 crore and is projected to generate over 1,000 high‑skilled deep‑tech jobs.
AI District: The Sovereign AI Park will be developed as a dedicated AI district, integrating high-performance AI computing infrastructure, secure data frameworks, advanced research and model training labs, and innovation clusters.
Institute for AI in Governance: The park will host a dedicated Institute for AI in Governance to develop AI for public-sector use, ensuring data security, ethics, and accountability.
Applications: The park will support large-scale AI projects in education, healthcare, agriculture, and citizen services, while promoting Tamil-first AI models reflecting local language and culture.

Galgotias University Inaugurates IIT Mandi Catalyst Satellite Centre in Greater Noida, UP

Henley Passport Index 2026: Singapore Topped for the Third Time; India Climbs to 80thOn January 13, 2026, Henley & Partners, a British consultancy expertized in investment migration, released Henley Passport Index (HPI) 2026 Global Ranking. As per the index, India has ranked 80th position, up from 85 in 2025, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival to 55 destinations, shared with Algeria and Niger.

• Singapore remains the most powerful passport for the third time with access to 192 destinations without a prior visa, followed by Japan and South Korea (188) sharing second place.
• Afghanistan ranked last with access to only 24 countries, creating a 168-country gap.

Highlights of Henley Passport Index(HPI) 2026:
Other Top 5 Ranked Countries: Countries such as Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland share third position with Luxembourg and Denmark with visa-free score of 186. Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, and Norway share fourth place with a visa-free score of 185.

• Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) share fifth place with 184 destinations.

Other Top 10 Countries: Countries such as Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Malta, New Zealand, and Poland share sixth place with visa free access to 183 destinations.

• Australia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, and the United Kingdom (UK) (7th rank) (182 destinations), followed by Canada, Iceland, and Lithuania share 8th place (181 destinations).
• Malaysia secured 9th place (180 destinations) and the United States of America (USA) secured 10th place with 179 destinations.

Other Least Powerful Passports: Syria ranked 100th with visa-free score of 26 destinations, Iraq (99th place) (29 destinations), Pakistan, Yemen (98th place) (31), Somalia (97th place) (33 destinations), Nepal (96th place) (35), Bangladesh (95th place) (37), Eritrea, North Korea, Palestinian Territory (94th place) (38), Libya, Sri Lanka (93rd) (39), and Iran (92nd) (40 destinations).

PFRDA Constitutes High-Level Committee Headed by M. S. Sahoo for Assured Payouts Under NPSIn January 2026, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), a statutory body under the Ministry of Finance(MoF), constituted a 15-member high-level expert committee, chaired by M. S. Sahoo, former Chairperson of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), to formulate a regulatory framework for assured payouts under the National Pension System (NPS).

• This step is aimed at strengthening the security of retirement income for NPS subscribers.

About High-Level Committee on Assured Payouts:
Composition: A 15-member multidisciplinary panel comprising experts from law, actuarial science, finance, insurance, capital markets, and academia.

• The committee has also been authorised to invite external experts or intermediaries as special invitees for consultation and feedback.

Purpose: Constituted as a standing advisory committee on structured pension payouts under the NPS to frame assured payout regulations, enable smooth accumulation-to-decumulation transition, and consult external experts and intermediaries.
Framework: Tasked with deliberating on novation and settlement to enable legally enforceable, market-based assurances, while defining operational standards including lock-in periods, fee structures, withdrawal limits, and tax treatment within the NPS payout phase.
Oversight: Charged with establishing risk management, capital adequacy, solvency, and legal safeguards for institutions offering assured payouts.
Protection: Required to standardize disclosures, prevent mis-selling, clarify ‘assured’ versus market-linked returns, and address shortcomings of the current annuity-based model.

It was established by the Government of India (GoI) in 2003, and later accorded statutory status under the PFRDA Act, 2013. Karnataka Bank Enables Khajane-2 e-Receipts Via Net Banking
In January 2026, Karnataka Bank Limited has enabled its net banking platform to support payment and receipt of electronic receipts(e-receipts) for government transactions through the Government of Karnataka’s Khajane‑2 system.

• This new initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to offering easy, secure and value-added digital services to meet the evolving requirements of its customers.

Key Details:
Regulatory Approvals: Karnataka Bank has secured the necessary authorization from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the approval of the Department of Treasuries, Government of Karnataka, to collect state government revenue receipts through the Khajane-2 Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS).
Key Benefits: After the successful technical integration with the e-Kuber system of RBI and the Khajane-2 platform, the bank will enable its customers to make seamless tax and fee payments to various state government departments through net banking.
Significance: By minimising manual procedures and streamlining receipt handling, the initiative improves user convenience for citizens while bolstering the State’s digital payments infrastructure.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

World Bank Projects India’s GDP Growth Rate at 7.2% for FY26; 6.5% for FY27In January 2026, World Bank Group (WBG) released its flagship report titled ‘Global Economic Prospects (GEP): January 2026 report’. The report has projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate at 7.2% for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), revised upward from 6.3% forecast in June 2025.

• The report stated that FY26 growth is mainly driven by robust domestic demand, including strong private consumption, which is further supported by tax reforms and rising household incomes in rural areas.

Other Key Projections:
India’s GDP for FY27: As per the report, India’s GDP growth rate is further projected to moderate to 6.5% in FY27 compared to its previous estimate of 7.2%, based on the assumption that 50% import tariffs imposed by the United States of America (USA) remain in place throughout the forecast horizon.

• However, India’s GDP is expected to edge up to 6.6% in FY28, aided by robust services activity, as well as a recovery in exports and a pickup in investment.
• The report further noted that the impact of higher tariffs on Indian exports to the USA is expected to be mitigated by stronger-than-anticipated momentum in domestic demand.

India’s Inflation: The report highlighted that India’s inflation is expected to converge to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s inflation target i.e. at 4%, assuming stable seasonal conditions contain food price inflation.
Global Growth Rate: The report projected that the global growth rate will slow down marginally by 10 basis points (bps) i.e. from 2.7% in Calendar Year 2025 (CY25) to 2.6% (in CY26).
South Asia Region: The growth rate of the South Asia region is projected to increase to 7.1% in CY25, supported by robust economic activity in India that mitigates the impact of rising trade tensions and heightened policy uncertainty.

• However, it is expected to ease to 6.2% in CY26, indicating the impact of higher US tariffs on India’s export.
• The World Bank excludes Pakistan and Afghanistan from its South Asia region, categorizing their economies under the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) division.

Background:
First Celebration: The day was initially observed as a pan-India event in 2016–2017 under the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and has been celebrated annually across the country since then.
Date Significance: January 14 was chosen to mark the retirement of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, the first Indian Commander‑in‑Chief of the Army, on 14 January 1953.

Karnataka Launches ‘Gruha Lakshmi Digital Marketing’ Portal for Women Entrepreneurs
In January 2026, the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), Government of Karnataka, extended the flagship Gruha Lakshmi Scheme by launching the ‘Gruha Lakshmi Digital Marketing’ portal at Karmani Utsav–2026 in Bengaluru(Karnataka), to promote women entrepreneurship, economic independence, and digital inclusion.

Gruha Lakshmi Digital Marketing Initiative:
Purpose: The portal enables women entrepreneurs to sell handicrafts, food items, jewellery, clothing, and traditional products globally while showcasing Karnataka’s culture.
Registration: Women entrepreneurs can enroll online at gruhalakshmidigital.org, through District In-charge Officers, or at the Department Head Office.

Leadership: The initiative is guided by Karnataka Chief Minister (CM) Siddaramaiah and Deputy Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar, spearheaded by Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Minister Women and Child Development (Karnataka), and overseen by the Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation under the chairpersonship of G.
