On January 6, 2026, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), launched the Beta Version of new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Integrated Standardisation portal and several other key initiatives, on the occasion of 79th BIS foundation day celebrations held in New Delhi, Delhi.

Highlights of 79th Foundation Day of BIS :
Key People: Union MoS B.L. Verma, MoCAF&PD, Sanjay Garg, Director General (DG) of BIS, Sanjiv Shankar, Additional Secretary & the Financial Advisor to Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), MoCAF&PD, and other stakeholders, were present at the event.
Key Launches: During the event, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi launched several initiatives including the BIS Standardisation Portal (beta version); SHINE (Standards Help Inform & Nurture Empowered Women) scheme; BIS Educational Literature, comic books on Indian standards through Rashtriya e-Pustakalay; BIS-SAKSHAM (Scheme for Acknowledging Knowledge, Skills and High-impact Merit) Annual Excellence Recognition Scheme and several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with many premier Indian institutes.
Key Initiatives Launched:
Beta Version of BIS Portal: It is a future-ready digital platform that integrates the entire standards of development lifecycle into a unified interface.
- It also streamlines the entire workflow (from proposal to publication) through specialised modules for standards, formulation, review, and collaboration of experts.
- It features an advanced data-driven dashboards and role-based access which ensures enhanced transparency, inclusivity, and speed for stakeholders of standards formulation.
SHINE Scheme: It is designed to promote women empowerment through sensitization of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) on Indian standards.
- The scheme will empower the women through structured training, grassroots partnerships with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and SHGs, and practical, locally delivered programmes.
BIS Education Literature: BIS has developed engaging comic books in both print and 2-Dimensional (2D) animated formats, aiming to promote awareness about standards, quality, safety and counterfeit products among children.
- Users can now read these books free on the Rashtriya-e-Pustakalay platform, a flagship digital library initiative by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education (MoE).
BIS-SAKSHAM: It is a structured initiative to recognise knowledge, skills, and high-impact merit across BIS.
1906 IEC Award: During the event, Amandeep Singh, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), was felicitated with the prestigious 1906 IEC Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards the development of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Working Group members.
MoUs with Premier Institutions: BIS has signed several MoUs with many premier Indian institutes to integrate Indian standards into academic curricula, expand pre standardisation Research and Development (R&D) projects and transform Engineering students into Standards-ready professions.
- Also, another 3 premier institutes: Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-Dharwad), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad , and National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Auranchal Pradesh (AR) have joined as MoU partner, expanding the reach of BIS to the academia.
- The MoU partnership will expand BIS Students Chapters, which presently include over 21,000 engineering students across 400+ chapters, along with standardisation integrated into 27 institutes and 17 Standardisation Chairs.
Key Achievement of BIS:
New Standards in 2025: During 2025, BIS developed more than 600 new standards, bringing the total to 23,293 standards, covering various domains like: Ayurveda, Yoga, & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH), robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), ecology, and other emerging technologies.
Product Certification Licenses: As per BIS, total number of products under the Fast-Track Certification Scheme has increased from 758 to 1,288.
- Nearly 9,700 new licenses were granted within 30 days in 2025, thereby increasing the total number of product certification licenses to more than 51,500.
- In 2025, a total of 124 new products were brought under mandatory BIS certification, bringing the total number of certified products to more than 1,437.
Digital Transformation: BIS has adopted digitalisation through various initiatives like: Manak Online Portal, simplified licensing procedures, fast-track trial licenses, cluster-based testing facilities, among others.
