Supercomputer PARAM Rudra Unveiled at IIT-Patna in Bihar

On December 26, 2025, PARAM Rudra supercomputer, a state-of-the-art High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, was launched at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Patna(Bihar), marking the first PARAM RUDRA supercomputer in Bihar.

  • The launch ceremony was presided over by Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

PARAM Rudra at IIT Patna: 

Background: In May 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IIT Patna and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under MeitY, to set up the supercomputer PARAM Rudra.

Indigenous Development: It operates at 838 teraflops and uses indigenously developed components and software, assembled in line with National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).

Research Capabilities: The PARAM Rudra system at IIT Patna enables research capabilities benefiting around 60 faculty members and 400 students across 10 departments.

Areas of Work: It will support work in many advanced areas such as Computational astrobiology & astrochemistry, material design & molecular electronics, computational fluid mechanics & nano-bio research, AI and data science, and Quantum computing.

About PARAM Rudra:

Framework: PARAM Rudra is a high-performance supercomputer developed in India under the NSM. It is built using indigenous Rudra servers and software stack, promoting self-reliance in HPC technology.

Name Significance: “PARAM(PARAllel Machine), a Sanskrit-derived term meaning “supreme”)” refers to supreme, ultimate, or highest in Sanskrit. “Rudra” is the Vedic name of Lord Shiva, the Hindu god.

Features: It is equipped with high-end Intel Xeon Central Processing Unit (CPUs), NVIDIA A100 Graphics Processing Unit (GPUs) for accelerated Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and simulation workloads.

  • It also includes large Random Access Memory (RAM) with parallel Lustre storage, high-speed InfiniBand interconnects, and delivers petaflop-scale (1015 Floating Point Operations Per Second, FLOPS) computing performance.

Previous Deployment: In 2024, PARAM Rudra supercomputers were launched at Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), Pune(Maharashtra); Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) (Delhi); and S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata (West Bengal, WB).

About National Supercomputing Mission(NSM):

Launch: It is a flagship initiative of the Government of India (GoI) launched in 2015, with a total outlay of Rs.4,500 crore.

  • As of December 2025, 37 supercomputers with 39 petaFLOPS capacity have been deployed nationwide under the NSM, supporting over 12,000 researchers.

Implementation: It is jointly implemented by the MeitY and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), with C-DAC and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru(Karnataka) as the nodal implementing agency.
