Declaration: In 2001, the Government of India(GoI) declared December 23, the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, as Kisan Diwas (National Farmer’s Day) to acknowledge his contributions to agriculture and farmer welfare.

First Observance: The first National Farmer’s Day (Kisan Diwas) was observed on December 23, 2001.

About Chaudhary Charan Singh:

Early Life: Born on December 23, 1902, in Noorpur, Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh(UP), Chaudhary Charan Singh, popularly known as Chaudhary Saheb, was a scholar of Indian economics.

PM: He served as the 5th PM of India from 1979 to 1980.

Contributions: He drafted the Debt Redemption Bill (1939), proposed the Agricultural Produce Marketing Bill (1938), and advocated Minimum Support Price (MSP) to protect farmers’ interests.

  • He led major land reforms through the UP Zamindari and Land Reforms Act (1952), Consolidation of Holdings Act (1953), and Land Holding Act (1960), abolishing the Zamindari system in UP, elevated Rural Development to a Ministry, and played a key role in establishing National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

Honours and Recognition: He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2024, and in his honour, the Lucknow Airport(UP) was renamed Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in 2008.

Literary Works: He authored ‘Shishtachar on Indian etiquette’ and wrote several notable works, including Abolition of Zamindari, Co-operative Farming X-rayed, India’s Poverty and its Solution, Peasant Proprietorship or Land to the Workers, and Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum.

Death: He passed away on May 29, 1987, in New Delhi(Delhi), and his memorial, Kisan Ghat, is located in New Delhi.

2025 Event:

2025 Award: On December 23, 2025, the 2nd edition of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Awards, instituted by the Kisan Trust, was presented in New Delhi to honour Chaudhary Charan Singh’s contributions to rural development, farmers’ welfare, and inclusive growth.

Dignitaries: The awards ceremony was presided over by Dr Yashveer Singh, President of the Kisan Trust, in the presence of Trustee Smt Charu Singh, with Union Minister of State(MoS) (Independent Charge, IC) Jayant Chaudhary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship(MSDE) and MoS for Education, attending as Guest of Honour.

Key Launches: During the event, the Kisan Trust showcased an Artificial intelligence (AI) generated video of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s interview and launched Sakshatkar’, a book highlighting his life and contributions.

New Initiatives : In 2025, the Kisan Trust introduced the Agricultural Entrepreneur Award to honour agripreneurs, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and institutions driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture.
