In December 2025, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) inaugurated 125 strategically important infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) (including 28 roads, 93 bridges, and 04 miscellaneous), the highest number of BRO’s project launched simultaneously, from the Union Territory (UT) Ladakh.
- In addition to that, the Union Defence Minister virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial in eastern Ladakh, built to honour the Indian Army (IA) personnel killed in the clash with Chinese soldiers in 2020.

Key Details of Projects:
Shyok Tunnel: 920 metre (m)-long Shyok Tunnel on the Durbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie Road that runs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, is one of the BRO’s key projects inaugurated by MoD.
- This new cut and cover tunnel, built in one of the world’s toughest and most challenging terrain, is expected to ensure all-weather, reliable connectivity and enhance security, mobility, and rapid deployment capabilities of this region during the extreme weather conditions.
States/UTs Covered: These newly inaugurated 125 projects, valued at Rs 5,000 crore, span across 2 UTs: Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and 7 states namely, Arunachal Pradesh (AR), Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh (HP), Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal (WB) and Mizoram.
5 Border Bridges in Chamoli: Among the 7 projects located in Uttarakhand, Union Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated 5 strategically significant bridges in Niti Pass region in Chamoli district, bordering China.
- The names of these newly inaugurated bridges in Uttarakhand: Pangti Bridge, Suraithota Bridge, Ghamshali Bridge, Gurkuti Bridge and Niti Bridge.
32 Infrastructure Projects in AR: Among 125 projects of BRO, 32 are located in AR. Some of these projects are implemented by Project Brahmank including the 35 m Shene Nallah bridge on Tato-Mechukha Road in Shi Yomi district;
- 15m Ritbung bridge, 40 m Rabung bridge, 40 m Seyo Nallah bridge, 20 m Sirak Nallah bridge, 45 m Naglung Ri bridge on Tuting-Bona Road, in Upper Siang district of AR.
- The remaining projects are being implemented by Project Vartak, Project Arunank, and Project Udayak.
- These projects are expected to support troops deployed along the India-China border in Shi Yomi and Upper Siang districts of the state.
- Also, these projects will provide uninterrupted connectivity to the armed forces and locals, enhancing operational preparedness and facilitating faster movement across the region.
Financial Status of BRO:
BRO’s Expenditure: While addressing the event, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that BRO incurred a record expenditure of Rs 16,690 crore in Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25), the highest ever expenditure incurred and has the set of Rs 18,700 crore as BRO’s expenditure for FY26.
BRO Projects: A total of 356 BRO infrastructure projects have been dedicated to the nation in the last two years, representing a significant achievement in the field of strategic infrastructure development.
Enhancement in BRO’s Budget: The Government of India (GoI) has increased the BRO budget from Rs 6,500 crore to Rs 7,146 crore in the Union Budget for FY26.
