In November 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAHD)and Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR) released the annual publication of ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS-2025)’ on the occasion of National Milk Day (observed on November 26, 2025) at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.

About BAHS 2025:
Overview: BAHS 2025 of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), provides comprehensive data on the livestock and dairy sector trends in the country.
Source: This latest edition of BAHS is based on the results of the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) conducted for the period from March 01, 2024 to February 29, 2025.
Significance: The survey provides important data on the production estimates of Major Livestock Products (MLPs) like: Milk, Eggs, Meat, and Wool, which plays an important role in research and policy formulation in the livestock sector.
Key Findings:
Milk Production:
Global Level Position: At present, India ranks 1st in milk production globally.
Increase in Milk Production: As per the latest survey, India’s total milk production is estimated as 247.87 Million Tonnes (MT)during 2024-25 compared to 239.30 MT production registered in 2023-24, marking 3.58% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) growth.
Per Capita Availability: Also, the per capita availability of milk in India has increased from 319 gram (gm) per day (in 2014-15) to 485 gm per day (in 2024-25).
Top 5 Milk Producing States: Uttar Pradesh (UP) (15.66%) topped among all major milk producing states in India; followed by Rajasthan (14.82%), Madhya Pradesh (MP) (9.12%), Gujarat (7.78%), and Maharashtra (6.71%).
- Cumulatively, these states contribute 54.09% of total milk production in the country.
Egg Production:
Global Status: Currently, India is 2nd in egg production worldwide.
Total Production: The survey revealed that overall total egg production in the country is estimated as 149.11 billion numbers (nos.) during 2024-25, registering a 3.18% Y-o-Y increase.
Per Capita Availability: As per the survey, the per capita availability of eggs in India increased from 62 nos. Per annum (in 2014-15) to 106 nos. Per annum (in 2024-25).
Top 5 Egg Producing States: Andhra Pradesh (AP) with the share of 18.37% of total egg production, has topped among all states in egg production; followed by Tamil Nadu (TN)(15.63%), Telangana (12.98%), West Bengal (WB)(10.72%), and Karnataka(6.67%).
- Together , these states contribute 64.37% of total egg production in the country.
Meat Production:
Global Status: At present, India ranks 4th in meat production globally.
Total Production: The survey has estimated the total meat production in the country at 10.50 MT during 2024-25, registering a 2.46% Y-o-Y growth.
Key Contributor: As per the survey, the meat production from poultry is 5.18 MT, contributing nearly 50% of total meat production in the country.
Top 5 Meat Producing States: WB with the share of 12.46% of total meat production, topped among all states in meat production; followed by UP (12.20%), Maharashtra (11.57%), AP (10.84%) and Telangana (10.49%).
- Collectively, these states contribute 57.55% of total meat production in the country.
Wool Production:
Total Production: As per the latest survey, India’s total wool production is estimated as 34.57 million kilogram (kg)during 2024-25, marking 2.63% Y-o-Y growth.
Top 5 Wool Producing States: Rajasthan with the share of 47.85% of total meat production, topped among all states in wool production; followed by Jammu & Kashmir (J&K)(22.88%), Gujarat(6.22%), Maharashtra(4.75%) and Himachal Pradesh (HP)(4.30%).
- Collectively, these states contribute 85.98% of total wool production in the country.
