MoSPI Organises Culmination Ceremony of 75th Anniversary of the NSS at Udaipur; Releases NIC 2025

In November 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) organised the Culmination Ceremony of the 75th Anniversary of the National Sample Survey (NSS) along with the observance of World Statistics Day(October 20) at Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Highlights of the Event:

Event: The event concluded a year-long celebration of the country’s survey system, themed “National Sample Survey: From the Glorious Past to the Promising Future for Viksit Bharat @ 2047.”

Chief Guest: The programme was graced by Union Minister of State(MoS) (Independent Charge, IC), Rao Inderjit Singh, MoSPI, as the Chief Guest along with Geeta Singh Rathore, Director General of NSS.

About National Industrial Classification(NIC) 2025:

Purpose: The NIC is a fundamental tool used in statistical surveys, censuses, economic research, and policy formulation. 

Evolution: India’s classification system, first introduced in 1962, has been revised periodically in line with international standards and changing economic landscape, leading to NIC 1970, NIC 1987, NIC 1990, NIC 1998, NIC 2004 and NIC 2008.

  • The NIC 2025 represents the latest updated national standard for classifying economic activities in India.

Need for Revision: NIC 2025 updates reflect India’s economic shifts, including renewable energy, fintech, e‑commerce (electronic commerce), digital services, and key indigenous sectors like AYUSH(Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy)healthcare and handloom.

International alignment: The NIC 2025 has been prepared by MoSPI in alignment with the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Revision 5, developed by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).

  • The revision was carried out under the guidance of the Expert Committee for Revision of Economic Classifications (ECREC) comprising subject matter experts and industry representatives.

New Structure: It introduces a new 6-digit coding structure, in place of the 5-digit structure of NIC 2008.

Other Launches:

Coffee Table Book: During the event, MoSPI released the coffee table book “From Inception to Innovation: The Story of NSS”, highlighting the organisation’s 75-year journey; the journal ““Stories Behind Numbers – Journal of FOD””, featuring creative works by NSS staff; and a special Sarvekshana supplement commemorating 75 years of NSS and its researchers’ contributions.

Portal & Anthem: The DI Lab Portal, a digital platform promoting innovation in official statistics through AI (Artificial Intelligence)/ML (Machina Language) use cases, pilot tools and collaborative resources was released on this occasion.

  • MoSPI also released the Anthem of the NSO, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, a renowned singer and and music composer.

Panel Discussion: A panel discussion on “Stories of Data Collection in NSS Surveys”, hosted by S. L. Menaria (former DG) and featuring a Sarpanch, a Girdawar, and an Industrialist, was conducted.
