Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to AP on October 16, 2025On October 16, 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh(AP), to inaugurate, lay foundation stones, and dedicate multiple development projects worth approximately Rs.13,430 crore to the nation.
Highlights:
Power:During the visit, PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the transmission system strengthening at Kurnool-III Pooling Station, at an estimated cost of more than Rs 2,880 crore.
Industry: He also laid the foundation stones for two new industrial areas in the state i.e. Orvakal Industrial Area (in Kurnool) and Kopparthy Industrial Area (in Kadapa), with a total investment of over Rs 4,920 crore.
Railway Sector: PM Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various railways projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore in AP.
Srikakulam-Angul Natural Gas Pipeline: During his visit, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated 422 km-long Srikakulam-Angul Natural Gas Pipeline project of Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) India Limited. The project was built at a cost of around Rs 1,730 crore.
Advanced Night Vision Product Factory: During the visit, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Advanced Night Vision Products Factory at Nimmaluru in Krishna district, AP.

Overview of Mongolian President Uknaagiin Khurelsukh’s Visit to India from 13 to 16 October 2025Mongolian President Uknaagiin Khurelsukh, visited India from October 13 to 16, 2025, at the invitation of President of India Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. The visit marked his first to India as Mongolia’s Head of State, commemorating 70 years of diplomatic relations and a decade of strategic partnership between the two countries.
Highlights of the Visit:
Meetings :
President: He was formally welcomed by President of India, Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, with a Guard of Honor and state reception.
PM: He was formally received by PM Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, marking the beginning of his official engagements in India.

• He also met Union Minister S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Business Forum: On October 15, 2025, he participated in the India-Mongolia Business Forum held in New Delhi, with an aim to enhance bilateral trade and investment.
Outcomes:
ISA: During the visit, Mongolian President announced that Mongolia is joining the International Solar Alliance (ISA), established in Paris(FRance) in 2015 by India and France.
MoUs signed: India and Mongolia signed a Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral ties across various sectors, including heritage preservation, mineral sources, digital solutions, and humanitarian cooperation.

Indian Army Hosted UNTCC Chiefs Conclave 2025 in New DelhiIn October 2025, the Indian Army (IA) hosted the ‘United Nations Troop Contributing Countries(UNTCC) Chiefs Conclave 2025’ from 14 to 16 October 2025 at the Manekshaw Centre, at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Delhi.

• The event brought together senior military leadership from 32 nations, along with senior United Nations (UN) officials, to deliberate on the future of global peacekeeping operations.

MoD Signed Rs 659.47 Crore Contract for Advanced Night Sight for SIG716 Assault RifleIn October 2025, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract worth Rs 659.47 crore with a consortium of MKU Limited (Lead Member) and Medbit Technologies Private Limited for the procurement of Advanced Night Sight (Image Intensifier) systems for the Indian Army’s (IA) 7.62 x 51mm SIG 716 Assault Rifles, along with associated accessories.
About the Procurement of Advanced Night Sight systems:
Procurement Objective: Equip Indian soldiers with Advanced Night Sight (Image Intensifier) systems for accurate target engagement up to 500 metres (m), even under starlit conditions.
Performance Enhancement: The Advanced Night Sight provides a significant improvement over existing Passive Night Sights (PNS) and allows soldiers to fully exploit the extended effective range of the SIG 716 Assault Rifle.
System Components: Each unit includes lens covers, battery packs, eye guards, chargers, cleaning kits, and maintenance tools.
Indian Army Signs Contract with Thales UK for LMM System
In October 2025, the Indian Army’s (IA)’s Corps of Army Air Defence (AAD) signed a contract worth Euro 350 million (USD 468 million) with Thales UK for the procurement of the Light Weight Modular Missile (LMM) System, a next-generation portable air defence weapon designed to counter drones, aircraft, and other aerial threats.

• The deal was finalized during British Prime Minister(PM) Keir Starmer’s visit to India, strengthening UK-India defence cooperation and supporting the broader Indo-Pacific strategic partnership.

System Overview: The LMM is a man-portable, precision-guided missile designed to neutralise aerial threats including aircraft, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs), and Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAVs).
Guidance: Operates on the Laser Beam Riding principle, providing high accuracy and resistance to evasive maneuvers by aerial targets.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Launched 8 Maritime Projects to Commemorate Golden Jubilee of NMPAIn October 2025, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) launched 8 development projects of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) during the Curtain Raiser Ceremony of the Golden Jubilee (50 years) Celebrations of NMPA held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Delhi.

• These new development projects aimed to boost India’s port infrastructure, logistics efficiency, and sustainability.

Key Highlights:
8 New Projects Launched: The projects launched under NMPA include: construction of two covered storage sheds (14,000 Metric Tons (MT) capacity, pre-engineered design);

• Construction of a dedicated cruise gate for international tourists;
• Modification of KK Gate entrance and exit with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled cargo handling, customs, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) facilities;
• Truck Parking Terminal (Customs House) has expanded with daily capacity of 50-80 trucks;
• Construction of 675 meters (m)-long PQC roads, with drainage facilities at MDL Yard; among others.

Launch of commemorative coin and stamp: In addition to these projects, the Union Minister launched a commemorative postal stamp, a Rs.50 commemorative coin, and the official Golden Jubilee Anthem of NMPA to commemorate 50 years of NMPA’s contribution to India’s maritime trade and regional growth.

Indian Navy Signs MoU With IIT Delhi to Strengthen Shipboard QoL
In October 2025, the Directorate of Naval Architecture (DNA) of the Indian Navy (IN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to collaborate on the creation of a research and design center to improve the Quality of Life (QoL) onboard Indian Naval Ships(INS) through design interventions.

• The MoU was signed in New Delhi(Delhi) by Rear Admiral Arvind Rawal, Assistant Chief of Materiel (Dockyard & Refit) of the IN, and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of the IIT Delhi.

Key Details of MoU:
Aim: The MoU aims to enhance crew comfort, safety, and efficiency on INS through ergonomic and design improvements, with potential benefits for mercantile vessels.
Collaboration: IIT Delhi and the DNA will jointly establish a Research and Design Centre to improve shipboard QoL
IIT Delhi’s Role: IIT Delhi researchers will assess the safety, efficiency, and habitability of current and future naval projects, studying existing ship designs and benchmarking them against international standards on parameters such as ergonomics, comfort, safety, and overall crew experience.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

391 million hectares of world’s tropical forest at high risk of loss: UN reportIn October 2025, the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report titled “High-risk forests, high-value returns: A co-benefit assessments for decision-makers”, in which it highlighted that around 391 million (mn) hectares (ha) of tropical forests are at high risk of deforestation.  
Key Highlights
High-risk forests: These are areas with high carbon stocks, significant additional ecosystem services, and a high likelihood of deforestation.

• Together they cover about 391 mn ha of tropical forests, nearly one-fourth of the world’s total 1.6 billion (bn) ha of tropical forest area.

Purpose of the report: The report aims to identify where these forests are most threatened and where protection would deliver the greatest benefits.

• It provides data-driven insights to help policymakers and investors prioritize protection efforts that maximize climate and ecological benefits.

India Elected Co-chair of UN-GGIM Asia-Pacific CommitteeIn October 2025, Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana, Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Surveyor General of India (SGI), has been officially elected as the Co-chair of the Regional Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) for a term of 3 years (2025 to 2028).

• Hitesh Kumar will co-chair the committee along with Woosug Cho (from Republic of Korea).

Key Details:
Election:  Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana was elected through the elections held during the 14th Plenary Meeting of UN-GGIM-AP, from September 24 to September 26, 2025 in Goyang-si, Republic of Korea, which was hosted by National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) of Korea.

• The event was attended by delegates from member states, technical experts, and observers; and discussions were held on key issues in geospatial information management across the Asia-Pacific region.

Significance: India’s election as Co-Chair is set to strengthen its leadership in shaping policies and strategies for efficient geospatial information management across the Asia-Pacific region.
About UN-GGIM-AP:
Overview: It is one of the 5 UN-GGIM regional committees (UN-GGIM-Africa; UN-GGIM-Americas; UN-GGIM-Europe and UN-GGIM-Arab States).
Background: This regional committee was initially established in 1995 as the Permanent Committee on Geographic Information System (GIS) Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific (PCGIAP), and was later, renamed as UN-GGIM-AP in 2012, following the establishment of UN-GGIM in 2011.
Members: It is represented by the National Geospatial Information Authorities of 56 countries in the Asia and Pacific region.
Key Functions: The committee works to maximize the economic, social, and environmental benefits of geospatial information through collaboration, capacity development, and shared solutions.

LIC Launched Jan Suraksha (880) and Bima Lakshmi (881) Plans  In October 2025, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has launched two new insurance plans: ‘LIC Jan Suraksha Plan (880)’, a life micro insurance plan is designed to cater the lower income group people and ‘LIC Bima Lakshmi Plan (881)’, designed exclusively for females.
Key Details:
LIC Jan Suraksha Plan (880): It is a non-par, non-linked individual savings insurance plan. Under this plan, the minimum and maximum basic sum assured per life is Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively. Also, basic sum assured multiples of Rs 5000.

• The minimum and maximum age for an individual to enroll in this plan, is 18 years (completed) and 55 years respectively.

LIC Bima Lakshmi Plan (881): It is a non-linked insurance plan that offers life cover and periodic fixed money back after 2-4 years or after the payment of premium ceases.  The minimum basic sum assured is Rs 2 lakh while there is no maximum limit, subject to board approved underwriting policy. Also, basic sum assured multiples are allowed for Rs 10,000.

• The minimum and maximum age for an individual to enroll in this plan, is 18 years (as of the last birthday) and 50 years respectively.

Australian Olympic Champion Ariarne Titmus Announces Retirement from SwimmingIn October 2025,  Australian swimmer Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus, a specialist in middle-distance freestyle, officially announced her retirement from competitive swimming, citing a combination of personal and health-related reasons.

• Her achievements include eight Olympic medals (4 gold -3 silver-1 bronze), eight Commonwealth Games(CWG) medals and many World Championship medals.

About Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus:
Career: She began her swimming journey under the guidance of renowned coach Dean Boxall.
Olympic Achievements: She made her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games(Japan), where she won two gold in 200 metre(m) freestyle and 400 m freestyle, one silver in 800m freestyle and one bronze in 4×200 freestyle .

•  She continued her dominance at Paris 2024(France), two golds (400m freestyle, 4×200m relay) and two silvers (200m and 800m freestyle), cementing her status as one of the world’s top freestyle swimmers.

Key Achievements: She won the 400 -m freestyles in the 2020 Olympics, beating World Record Holder Katie Ledecky.

• She became the first Australian since Dawn Fraser (1964) to win consecutive golds in the same event.

Commonwealth Games(CWG): She won four medals in 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia, including three golds in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, and 4×200m freestyle relay, along with a silver in the 200m freestyle.

• She continued her dominance at the 2022 Birmingham Games, claiming four golds in the 200m, 400m, 800m freestyle events, and the 4×200m freestyle relay.

World Championships: She won 9 World Championship medals,including a bronze in the 4×200m freestyle relay at Budapest 2017, Hungary; double golds and 1 silver and 1 bronze in Gwangju 2019, South Korea (including a world-record 4×200m relay); and also won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals medals at Fukuoka 2023, Japan.
World Record: Currently, she holds the World Record in the women’s 200–m freestyle at 1:52.23 from the 2024 Australian Olympic Trials, and she is also a member of Australia’s World Record 800-m freestyle relay from the 2023 World Championships, with a time of 7:37.50.

India Wins Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games by HM Amit Shah
In October 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that Commonwealth Association has approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG 2030).The centenary edition of the CWG will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, marking India’s second time hosting the Games after the 2010 Delhi edition.

• This approval marks a major step for India, which is also aiming to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad.

Key Details:
Beat Out: Ahmedabad was selected against Abuja, the capital of Nigeria in the final round of consideration for 2030 CWG bid.
Ahmedabad as Host City: The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has now confirmed that it will recommend Ahmedabad as host city for 2030 CWG.
Final Approval: However, the final decision will be taken by the full Commonwealth Sport membership at the General Assembly which is scheduled to be held on November 26 2025, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Centenary of CWG: 2030 CWG will mark the centenary (100th year) of the inaugural event of CWG which was held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.
About the Commonwealth Games:The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, unite athletes from 56 Commonwealth nations in diverse sporting disciplines.

• India last finished 4th at Birmingham 2022, winning 61 medals (22 Gold, 16 Silver, 23 Bronze).
• The Glasgow 2026 Games will precede the 2030 event.

Khelo India University Games 2025 To be Held in Rajasthan
In October 2025, , Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), announced that the 5th edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG 2025) will be held across seven cities in Rajasthan from November 24 to December 5, 2025.

About KIUG 2025
7 Cities: Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kota, and Bharatpur.
Host Universities: Poornima University and the University of Rajasthan will serve as the primary venues for KIUG 2025, hosting major sports competitions and events.
Organizer: The MYAS organized this event in collaboration with the Rajasthan State Sports Council.
Sports  : The 12-day KIUG 2025 will showcase 23 medal sports and one demonstration sport kho-kho.

• The medal sports include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, mallakhamb, rugby, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, yogasana, cycling, beach volleyball, canoeing, and kayaking.
• Beach volleyball, canoeing & kayaking, and cycling are being included in the KIUG programme for the first time.

Previous Edition: The previous edition of Khelo India University Games was held in Assam North-east India from February 17-29, 2024. Chandigarh University (CU) (Chandigarh) topped the medal tally with 71 medals.

International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2025 – October 17The International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (IDICH), is annually observed across the globe on 17th October to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and celebrating the world’s diverse living heritage.

• 17 October 2025 marks the 2nd observance of IDICH.

Background:
Declaration: In November 2023, during its 42nd session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) General Conference adopted the resolution A/RES/42/34 and proclaimed October 17 as IDICH.
First Observance: The first edition of the IDICH was observed on 17 October 2024.
Significance: October 17 marks the anniversary of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which came into force in 2006.

• The Convention is ratified by 181 States Parties, with over 700 traditions and cultural practices recognized worldwide.

About Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH):
Definition: UNESCO classifies Intangible Cultural Heritage into five domains: oral traditions, performing arts, social rituals and festivals, knowledge of nature, and traditional craftsmanship.
UNESCO Lists: The Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices include 788 elements from 150 countries across five regions.
Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage
Functions & Composition: The Committee promotes the Convention, guides best practices, reviews inscriptions, and provides assistance.

• Composed of qualified members elected with geographical balance, members serve four-year terms (half renewed every two years, no consecutive terms).

Committee Members: Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Barbados, Burkina Faso, China, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Haiti, India, Malaysia, Mauritania, Nigeria, Paraguay, Slovakia, Spain, Uganda, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates(UAE), Uzbekistan, Viet Nam and Zambia.
20th Committee Session: The 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of ICH will be held 8 to 13 December 2025, in New Delhi, Delhi, India.
2025 Event: 
A global web-based campaign invites States Parties, communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and cultural institutions to organize events from 1 to 31 October, using the official logo to showcase and raise awareness of living heritage worldwide.

World Food Day 2025 – October 16The United Nations (UN)’s World Food Day (WFD) is annually observed across the globe on 16 October to promote awareness of healthy diets, food security, and access to nutritious food

• 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, established in 1945.
• 2025 Theme:  ‘Hand in hand for better food and a better future!’

Background:
Establishment: WFD was established in 1979 during the 20th session of the FAO Conference held in Rome, Italy.
UN Recognition: On 5 December 1980, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/35/70, officially proclaiming 16 October of every year as WFD.
First Observation: The inaugural WFD was observed on 16 October 1981.
2025 Events:
World Food Forum – Flagship Event:The flagship forum takes place from October 10 to 17, 2025, at FAO Headquarters in Rome(Italy) and online.

• During the event, the Food and Agriculture Museum & Network,Four new World Restoration Flagships launched.

World Food Day 2025 Summit:On October 16, 2025, a key summit titled “World Food Day 2025: Food is Medicine and Eating for Health” was held in Tempe, Arizona, the United States of America(USA)
