PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates NMIA, Launches Multiple Development Projects in Mumbai, MaharashtraOn October 8, 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated First Phase (Phase I) of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and launched and dedicated multiple development projects in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Navi Mumbai International Airport:
Overview: NMIA, built with a budget outlay of Rs.19,650 crores, is India’s largest Greenfield airport project. It will serve as the second international airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai.
Developer: It is developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, and City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), aligning with Viksit Bharat 2047, vision of Government of India (GOI)
Metro Connectivity:
Overview: PM Modi inaugurated Phase 2B, the final phase, of the Mumbai Metro Line-3 (also called as the Aqua Line), stretching from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade in Mumbai.
- It is the first and only fully underground Metro in Mumbai.
Budget: It is built at a cost of Rs.12,200 crores, totaling the total cost of Aqual Line project to Rs.37,720 crores including all phases.
Coverage: The Mumbai Metro Line-3, spanning 33.5 Kilometre (Km) from Cuff Parade to Aarey Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) with 27 stations, is expected to serve around 13 lakh commuters every day.

NCA, DoT and GSMA Signed MoU to Strengthen Telecom Policy, Research and Capacity Building
In October 2025, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under Ministry of Communication; the National Communications Academy (NCA), and the GSM Association (GSMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi (Delhi) to enhance collaboration in telecom policy, research, and capacity building, supporting India’s Digital India vision.

WHO Report: India, Bangladesh, Nepal on Track to Achieve 30% Tobacco Use Reduction by Year-endIn October 2025, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released the 6th edition of ‘WHO Global Report on Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Use 2000-2024 and Projections 2025-30’. As per the report, 3 South-East (SE) Asian countries namely, Bangladesh, India and Nepal are on track to achieve at least 30% relative reduction in tobacco use by the end of 2025.
- While, 6 other SE Asian countries: Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic (DPR) of Korea, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, are projected to witness smaller declines in tobacco use.
Global Scenario:
Tobacco Use: The WHO report shows global tobacco users declined from 1.38 billion in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024, and is projected to drop by 120 million more by 2025, a 27% relative reduction.
E-Cigarettes & Vape: For the 1st time, WHO has presented estimates of global e-cigarettes use. As per the report, over 100 million people worldwide now use e-cigarettes, of which nearly 86 million are adults, who live in High Income Countries (HICs).
- The report also highlighted that prevalence of e-cigarettes or vape is also common among teenagers, at least 15 million teenagers aged between 13 and 15 years, are already using e-cigarettes.
- The report further projected that children are on average 9 times more likely than adults to vape.
Gender Trends: Women reached the 30% global reduction target by 2020, five years ahead of schedule, with tobacco use falling from 11% (2010) to 6.6% (2024) and female users dropping from 277 million to 206 million.
- In contrast, men who make up over 80% of global tobacco users are not expected to meet the target until 2031, with around 1 billion male users still consuming tobacco.

Four New Plant Species Discovered in the Western GhatsIn October 2025, a team of researchers led by Professor K. Kotresha from Karnatak Science College, Dharwad (Karnataka), discovered four new plant species such as Zeuxine seetharamii, Oberonia marnkuliensis, Parasopubia gorensis, and Utricularia kumtensis in the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Zeuxine seetharamii: It belongs to the Orchidaceae (orchid) family and exhibits a distinct arrangement of flowers along its stem, different from most related Zeuxine species.
Oberonia marnkuliensis: It belongs to the Orchidaceae (orchid) family and was discovered in moist, shaded areas of the Western Ghats at Marnkuli Hill in Shivamogga (Karnataka)
Parasopubia gorensis: It belongs to the Genus Parasopubia and thrives in shaded, humid environments that provide the ideal conditions for its growth and reproduction.

Establishment: The IAF was founded on 8th October 1932 as part of the British Royal Air Force under the name Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF).

PARADE :The 93rd anniversary of the IAF day was celebrated at Air Force Station Hindan, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (UP) on 8th October 2025.
The event was graced by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces General Anil Chauhan.
Ceremonial Parade: Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh was honoured with an aerial salute by three Mi-17 1V helicopters flying in the ‘Dhwaj’ formation, carrying the National Flag, IAF Flag, and Operation Sindoor Flag.
Expedition: On October 8, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and IAF flagged off a joint scuba diving expedition from Goa, marking 93 years of IAF service to the nation.
