National Ayurveda Day 2025 – September 23

National Ayurveda Day 2025 is observed across India on September 23 to raise awareness about Ayurveda’s role in preventing and treating a wide range of health issues.

Background:

Declaration: In 2016, the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) declared that Dhanvantari Jayanti would be observed as National Ayurveda Day to integrate Ayurveda into mainstream healthcare.

First Observance: The inaugural National Ayurveda Day was celebrated on 28th October 2016.

Change of Date: Previously observed on Dhanteras (Kartik month), Ayurveda Day had a variable date each year.

  • In May 2025, the Government of India (GoI) fixed September 23 for the annual celebration of Ayurveda Day, a date that also coincides with the autumnal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal.

Support: The annual celebration is organized and supported by the Ministry of AYUSH in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

About Ayurveda:

Overview: Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine originating in the Indian subcontinent, focusing on a holistic approach to health that aims to promote long, balanced, and healthy living.

Meaning: The word ‘Ayurveda’ comes from the Sanskrit terms Ayus (life or lifespan) and “Veda” (knowledge), literally translating to “the knowledge of life.”

Celebrations at CARI: 

Event: On 23rd September 2025, the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH, celebrated the 10th Ayurveda Day through nationwide outreach programmes in New Delhi, Delhi.

Ayurveda Expo: Held from 10th September to 23rd October 2025 at CARI.

Women’s Health Initiatives: CARI conducted the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan 2025, offering women-focused Outpatient Department (OPD) services, Ayurvedic medicines, awareness programmes on post-menopausal, geriatric, and childhood health, and a medical camp benefiting 25 patients.

Celebrations at AIIA, Goa:

On 23rd September 2025, the Ministry of AYUSH celebrated the 10th National Ayurveda Day at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa.

  • Key dignitaries included Governor of Goa Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Chief Minister (CM) of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, and Union Minister of State (MoS), Independent Charge(IC) Prataprao Jadhav, Ministry AYUSH.

Inauguration:  The launch of the Integrative Oncology Unit at AIIA Goa, a collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre, was commended for integrating Ayurveda with modern oncology to provide holistic cancer care.

Initiatives: Launched the Desh ka Swasthya Parikshan Campaign, APTA Portal (Ayurvedagranthasamuccaya – Authoritative Principal Textbooks of Ayurveda) and DRAVYA Portal (Digitized Retrieval Application for Versatile Yardstick of AYUSH Substances) to promote nationwide health assessment and digital access to Ayurvedic substances.

Celebration: Organized Ran-Bhaji Utsav to celebrate forest vegetables used in Ayurvedic diets.

Awards: Presented the National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Awards 2025 to Professor Bamwari Lal Gaur, Vaidya Neelakanthan Mooss E.T., and Vaidya Bhavana Prasher.
