Overview of PM Narendra Modi’s Visit to Assam from September 13 to 14, 2025

Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi visited Assam from September 13 to 14, 2025, as part of his 5-state tour, following his visits to Manipur and Mizoram.

  • During his visit, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones of major infrastructure and industrial development projects worth more than Rs 18,530 crore in Assam.

Birth Centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika:

Event: On September 13 2025, PM Narebdra Modi attended a special function organised to mark the centenary (100th) birth anniversary of legendary singer, composer and Bharat Ratna awardee ‘Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, in Guwahati, Assam.

  • This event was part of the year-long centenary celebrations of the legendary musician and cultural icon, known as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra.”

Release of Commemorative Coin: During the event, he released a commemorative coin of Rs 100 and postage stamp in the honour of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika for his exceptional contributions to Indian culture and music.

  • He also released Hazarika’s biography titled ‘Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika written by Anuradha Sarma Borpujari.

Key Features of Coin:

Specifications: The total weight of coin is 40 grams (grams), made of pure silver and measures 44 millimeters (mm) in diameter.

Description: The obverse side of coin features a portrait of Dr. Hazarika with the inscription of ‘Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Birth Centenary’ written in Hindi along the upper circumference and English along the lower circumference and the year 2025 is inscribed below his image.

  • While, the reverse side of coin displays the Ashoka Pillar emblem, below which the denomination of Rs 100 is inscribed and on either side of denomination ‘Bharat’ is written in Hindi and ‘India’ in English.

Produced by: This newly released commemorative coin is being produced by the India Government Mint, which operates under the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL), as per the directions of Ministry of Finance (MoF).

Key Projects Launched in Darrang:

On September 14 2025, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 3 key health and infrastructure projects worth around Rs 6,500 crore in Mangaldoi, Darrang district of Assam.

Darrang Medical College & Hospital: PM laid the foundation stones for Darrang Medical College (DMC) and Hospital; the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) School and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Nursing College, estimated to be constructed at a cost of Rs 570 crore and will be completed within 3 years.

  • DMC will be the 24th Medical College (MC) of the state and is estimated to admit 100 students annually into Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme.

Guwahati Ring Road: He also laid the foundation stone for 118.5 kilometer (km) long Guwahati Ring Road, estimated to be built at a cost of Rs 4,530 crore.

  • The project will connect Kamrup and Darrang districts (in Assam) with Ri Bhoi (in Meghalaya).

Narengi-Kuruwa Bridge: He also laid the foundation stone for 2.9 km long Narengi-Kuruwa 6-lane Bridge. This new bridge will be built over the Brahamputra River, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore.

  • The bridge is part of Guwahati Ring Road project, is expected to boost connectivity and promote socio-economic growth in the region.

Key Projects Inaugurated at Golaghat:

Inauguration of Bioethanol Plant: PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Assam Bioethanol Plant, India’s 1st bamboo-based bio-refinery, at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) at Golaghat in Assam.

  • This newly inaugurated bio-refinery was built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore under the Joint Venture (JV) of NRL and Finland’s Fortum and Chempolis OY.

Polypropylene Plant: He also laid the foundation stone for Polypropylene plant at NRL, Golaghat in Assam. This new plant will be constructed at a cost of Rs 7,230 crore, expected to generate employment opportunities and lead to overall socio-economic development of the region.
