Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy Launches Logo, Brochure and Website of ‘Bharat Steel 2026’On August 13, 2025, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Ministry of Steel (MoS), Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), launched the official logo, brochure, and website of “Bharat Steel 2026during a workshop for the secondary steel sector held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The event witnessed the participation of Sandeep Poundrik, Secretary, MoS, and other senior officials.

About Bharat Steel 2026:
Event: Bharat Steel 2026, a flagship initiative of the MoS, is an international conference-cum-exhibition dedicated to the steel ecosystem. The event is scheduled for April 16-17, 2026, to be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Aim: The initiative is launched with an aim to conduct the largest steel exhibition in India and position India as a global hub for sustainable and technologically advanced steel production.
Per Capita Consumption: During the event, Sandeep Poundrik,Secretary of MoS, announced that the per capita consumption of Steel in India has crossed 100 Kilogram (Kg) for the first time, a significant milestone in the steel sector.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Completed 5 YearsOn August 15 2025, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) or Drugs-Free India Campaign, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE) has successfully completed 5 years.

  • The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment (DoSJE) under MoSJE in partnership with the Government of National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi has organised a special event on August 13, 2025 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of NMBA in KV School No.2 in New Delhi, Delhi.
  • MoSJE acts as the Nodal Ministry for drug demand reduction in India and is responsible for coordinating and monitoring all aspects of drug abuse prevention, assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, among others.

About Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA):
Launched: NMBA was officially launched on August 15, 2020 by the MoSJE under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).
Coverage: It was initially launched in 272 districts across 32 States/Union Territories (UTs) which were identified as most vulnerable in terms of usage of drugs. The initiative has now been extended to all districts of the country.

Impact: So far, through the various activities initiated under NMBA, over 18.10 crore people have been sensitized on substance use including more than 6.02 crore youth and over 4.08 crore women.

MNRE: India Achieved Landmark Milestone of 100 GW of Solar PV Modules Manufacturing Capacity under ALMMIn August 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that India has achieved a historic milestone of 100 Giga Watt (GW) of solar Photo Voltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), marking a significant increase from 2.3 GW in 2014.

  • This achievement bolsters Government of India (GoI)’s commitment towards Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliance) and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030.

About ALMM Order:
Introduced: MNRE issued the ALMM of Solar PV Modules (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order (ALMM Order, 2019) on January 02, 2019.
1st ALMM List: In March 2021, MNRE issued the 1st ALMM list for solar PV modules with an initial enlisted capacity of around 8.2 GW.

  • Since then, the number of enlisted manufacturers has grown to 100 and now stands at 123.

Amendment : In December 2024, MNRE made an amendment to ALMM Order, 2019 and introduced ALMM List-II for solar PV cells under the ALMM framework.

MY Bharat Signs MoU with SOUL for Youth Leadership Development
In August 2025, MY Bharat under the Department of Youth Affairs (DoYA), Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with School of Ultimate Leadership Foundation (SOUL) to advance youth leadership development across India.

  • The collaboration aims to develop 100,000 youth leaders (aged 18–29 years) nationwide through programs in governance, public policy, social entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and financial literacy.

IGNCA and BSIP Sign MoU for India’s Science-Culture Integration
In August 2025, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), an autonomous trust under the Ministry of Culture, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology(MoS&T) at IGNCA in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The MoU marks the first initiative in India that aims to create a unified platform for showcasing India’s scientific and cultural achievements to national and global audiences.

Indian Oil Panipat Gets First ISCC CORSIA Certification for SAF in India
In August 2025, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil) has become the first Indian oil refinery company to receive the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), developed under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production at its refinery in Panipat, Haryana.

  • The certification was formally handed over to IndianOil by Cotecna, an International Certifying Agency, at an event in New Delhi, Delhi.

BANKING & FINANCE

RBI To Introduce Continuous Clearing and Settlement Realisation in CTS in 2 PhasesOn August 13 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a circular for introduction of ‘Continuous Clearing and Settlement on Realisation in CTS’. As per RBI’s circular, the Cheque Truncation System(CTS) which currently processess cheques with a clearing cycle of upto two working days, is set to transition to continuous clearing with ‘on-realisation-settlement’.

  • The new mechanism will be implemented in two phases i.e. Phase-I will come into effect on October 04, 2025 while Phase-2 is scheduled to commence on January 03, 2026.

Timeline for Phase-I: During Phase-I, it is mandatory for drawee banks to confirm (positively/negatively) cheques presented on them by 7:00 pm on the same day, in failure to do the confirmation by then, the cheques will be considered as approved for settlement.
Timeline for Phase-II: During Phase-2, cheques are required to be confirmed within the 3 hours of presentation time (T+3 hours clear hours), if no confirmation is received within the specified time limit, then, the cheque will be considered approved.

HDFC ERGO General Partners with PhonePe to Promote Health Insurance
On August 13, 2025, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Limited (HDFC ERGO), a Joint Venture(JV) between HDFC Ltd and ERGO International AG, has partnered with PhonePe to launch an affordable health insurance solution, with an aim to expand health insurance coverage to the underserved citizens in India.

SBI Life Launches Term Insurance Plan ‘SBI Life- Smart Shield Plus’ 
On August 14, 2025, SBI Life Insurance Company Limited (SBI Life), a Joint Venture (JV) between State Bank of India (SBI) and BNP Paribas Cardif, launched “SBI Life-Smart Shield Plus”, a future-ready term insurance plan, designed for the growing needs of the customers.

Infosys to Acquire 75% Stake in Versent Group for USD 153 million
On August 14, 2025, Infosys, India’s second-largest Information Technology (IT) firm, announced its strategic move to acquire 75% stake in Versent Group, a telecommunication company and wholly owned subsidiary of Australia’s Telstra, for USD 153 million (approximately Rs 1,300 crores) to establish a Joint Venture (JV) focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered cloud and digital services.

Astrophel Aerospace & IN-SPACe Signed MoU for Reusable Rocket Engine Development
On August 13, 2025, Astrophel Aerospace Private Limited signed a framework Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), the nodal body under the Department of Space (DoS), to collaborate on the development of reusable rocket engine technology.

  • The agreement was signed in the presence of  Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe, and Dr. Prafulla Kumar Jain, Director of Program Management & Authorization at IN-SPACe.

Funding: The development comes after Astrophel’s Rs.6.84 crore fundraise aimed at building a reusable launch hopper powered by its Astra series launch vehicle.
Milestone : Astrophel is among the few Indian startups to successfully test-fire a semi-cryogenic engine, completing the test on 15 August 2023 without any external capital.

China Launched Geely-04 Satellite Constellation for IoT and Vehicle Communication ServicesIn August 2025, China launched the 4th orbital plane satellites of the ‘Geely Future Mobility Constellation(GEESATCOM) or Geely-04 constellation of 11 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites aboard a Smart Dragon-3 (SD-3) rocket from an offshore platform near Rizhao, Shandong Province (China), to enhance global Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and inter-vehicle communication services.

  • With this launch, Geespace expanded its Geely-04 Geesatcom IoT constellation from 30 to 41 satellites.
  • The mission, conducted by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, was carried out for China-based Geespace, the commercial aerospace subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

Design & Capabilities: Developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology’s subsidiary, China Rocket. It is designed to deliver payloads of up to 1,500 kilogram(kg) to a 500 kilometer(km) altitude Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO).
Mission Record: This launch marked the 6th flight of the SD-3 rocket series.

Asian Surfing Championships 2025; India’s Performance Secures Full Quotas for Asian Games 2026The Asian Surfing Championships (ASC) 2025, held from August 3 to 12, 2025 in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, marking India’s debut as host. The event served as the final qualification event for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

  • The ASC 2025 featured over 150 surfers from 20 countries in 4 categories (Open Men/Women, U-18 Boys/Girls).
  • India’s breakthrough moment of first-ever individual medal at the ASC came when Ramesh Budihal clinched bronze in the Open Men’s final.

India’s Historic Performance
Breakthrough: In Open Men’s final, Ramesh Budihal scored 12.60 points to finish third by winning the bronze medal, behind Kanoa Heejae (South Korea, 15.17 points) and Pajar Ariyana (Indonesia, 14.57 points)

S.Rohith Krishna Becomes India’s 89th Chess GrandmasterIn August 2025, 19-year-old S. Rohith Krishna, an engineering student from Chennai (Tamil Nadu, TN), earned his final Grandmaster (GM) norm and achieved an International Chess Federation(FIDE) rating of 2516 (as of July 2025), officially became India’s 89th chess GM and the 85th male player to achieve this title.

Indian Olympic Hockey Medalist Dr Vece Paes Passed Away
On August 14, 2025, Former Indian Hockey Player and Olympic Medalist, Dr. Vece Paes, passed away at the age of 80 in Kolkata, West Bengal (WB). He is the father of Leander Paes, former Indian Tennis Player.

Njattyela Sreedharan, Self-Taught Linguist and Dictionary Creator, Passed AwayOn August 13, 2025, renowned self-taught linguist Njattyela Sreedharan, passed away at the age of 87 in Kannur, Kerala. He was born in 1938 in Thalassery, Kerala.

  • He was widely known for compiling the 860-page Chathur Dravida Bhasha Padhaparichayam, a landmark dictionary connecting four major Dravidian languages – Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu.

Publication of the Dictionary: After 25 years of dedicated work and compiling over 1 lakh words in an 860-page volume, the full four-language dictionary was published in November 2020, producing 500 copies at a cost of Rs. 4 lakhs, which sold out within two weeks.

  • The second edition was published in May 2023 by the Kerala Language Institute.

Leadership Roles: He served as Kannur Taluk President of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham (Progressive Arts and Literary Association) and was a member of the State Council of the NGO Union.
Awards: He received several honours, including the Dr. T.P. Sukumaran Master Award, the Dr. Hermann Gundert Award, and the India Reading Olympiad Special Jury Award.
Recognition: His life and dedication to language were celebrated in the 2021 National Film Award-winning documentary ‘Dreaming of Words’, directed by Nandan.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Hindi: Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas) is a national memorial day in India, observed every year on August 14 to honor the victims and reflect on the pain and suffering caused by the 1947 Partition of British India. It also highlights the courage and resilience of the people affected.

  • August 14, 2025, marks the 5th annual commemoration of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in India.

Note:August 14 also coincides with Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Impact : The event ignited severe communal violence, mass displacement, and became one of the most violent migrations in recorded history.
Announcement and Boundary Demarcation: On June 3, 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India (in office since March 24, 1947), formally announced Partition; boundaries were drawn by Cyril Radcliffe.
Migration Statistics: This Partition triggered one of the largest migrations in human history, impacting nearly 20 million people.

  • Data shows that about 6 million non-Muslims left West Pakistan, while around 6.5 million Muslims migrated from Punjab, Delhi, and other regions of India into West Pakistan.

2025 Events:
Exhibitions: The Ministry of Culture, in partnership with the Ministry of Railway(MoR), held nationwide exhibitions, particularly at railway stations, depicting the immense hardships endured during the Partition.

Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Launched Forest Wildlife Crime Management System ‘HAWK’ in TN
In August 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Kirti Vardhan Singh, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) launched a customized version of ‘Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK)’, a digital-cum-centralized forests and wildlife crime management system designed to curb forest and wildlife crimes, for Tamil Nadu (TN) forest department.

  • With this, TN becomes the 3rd state in India, after Kerala and Karnataka to implement this wildlife crime management system.

  • Currently, among these 4 modules, only two (Peregrine and Shikra) have been implemented in TN.

Features: : HAWK uses Named Entity Recognition to extract offender names, locations, and aliases, while network analysis maps criminal relationships, and predictive modeling identifies potential poaching hotspots from historical data.
