Overview of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: A Flame that Warms the HeartAs of July 2025, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has provided over 10.33 crore Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections, empowering rural households with access to clean cooking fuel.

  • The union cabinet approved a subsidy of Rs.300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 9 refills per year and Rs.2200 government support per connection for the beneficiaries of the PMUY during Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), at an expenditure of Rs. 12,000 crore.

About PMUY:
Objective: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), introduced the PMUY as a flagship scheme for providing LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households.

  • The scheme was launched on 1st May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

Ujjwala-Phase 1: This phase aimed to provide 5 crore LPG connections to women from BPL households.

  • Subsequently, the target was enhanced to 8 crore connections.
  • This scheme initially provided financial support of Rs. 1,600 per connection by the government.

Ujjwala 2.0: This 2nd phase was launched on 10th August 2021 to expand the coverage and reach of the distribution by another 1 crore households.

  • It aimed to fill the gaps left by the 1st phase and ensure last-mile delivery of clean cooking fuel.

Union Cabinet Approved 4 New Semiconductor Units for Rs 4,600 Crore in Punjab, Odisha, and APOn August 12 2025, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the proposal to establish 4 new semiconductor assembly and testing facilities in states: Punjab, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh (AP) under its India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with a total financial budget of Rs 4,600 crore.

  • With this, the total number of approved projects under ISM has now reached to 10, with combined investments of about Rs 1.60 lakh crore in 6 states.
  • These newly approved facilities are expected to generate 2,034 skilled jobs which would drive the electronic manufacturing ecosystem resulting in creation of several indirect job opportunities.

Launched: ISM, a flagship programme of Government of India (GoI), was officially launched by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) in 2021 with total budget outlay of Rs 76,000 crore (or, around USD 10 billion).
Aim: It aimed to develop a full-stack semiconductor ecosystem locally, from design to manufacturing and testing.

India’s Defence Production Surged to Record-high Rs 1.51 Lakh Crore in FY25
In August 2025, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD) informed that annual defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs 1.51 lakh (Rs 1,50,590 crore) in Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).

  • This figure reflects an increase of 18% compared to last fiscal year’s output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and also remarkable 90% increase since FY20, when the figure stood at Rs 79,071 crore.

Increase in Private Sector Share: The data also revealed that the contribution of the private sector has increased from 21% (in FY24) to 23% (in FY25).
Overall Production: The overall production of DPSUs and other PSUs has increased by 16% while the production of private sector has increased by 28%.
Exports: Defence exports touched a record high of Rs.23,622 crore in FY25, marking a 12.04% increase over the previous year.

DPIIT Signs MoU with Zepto to Support Manufacturing Startups through ‘Zepto Nova’ Innovation ChallengeOn August 12, 2025, Department of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zepto Private Limited (Zepto) (formerly known as Kiranakart Technologies Private Limited) to launch the Zepto Nova” Innovation Challenge, with an aim to support the startups at their early stage in the manufacturing sector.

  • The MoU was signed by Dr. Sumeet Jarangal, Director, DPIIT, and Kaivalya Vohra, Co-founder, Zepto.

DPIIT Signs MoU with Hero MotoCorp:

Partnership: DPIIT signed an MoU with Hero MotoCorp Limited (Hero MotoCorp) to support and scale startups and entrepreneurs at their early stage through its innovation accelerator programme “Hero For Startups”.

  • The MoU was signed by Dr. Sumeet Jarangal, Director of DPIIT, and Utkarsh Mishra, Global Innovation Portfolio Lead, Hero MotoCorp.

Areas: Under the MoU, DPIIT and Hero MotoCorp will jointly support the startups focused on future mobility, clean technology, and deep technology.
Access: The selected startups will be provided with exclusive access to Hero MotoCorp’s Research and Development (R&D) facilities in Germany and India, the extensive network of dealers, suppliers and partners, and mentorship.
Opportunity: The startups will be provided with opportunities to develop paid Proofs of Concept (PoCs), enabling real-world validation and market exposure.

NLCIL and BARC Signs MoU for Rare Earth Extraction from Fly Ash
In August 2025, NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Coal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), for the extraction of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from fly ash.

NABARD, APGB & Aqua Exchange Signed MoU to Launch Collateral-Free Shrimp Farming Loans
On August 11, 2025, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank (APGB), and Aqua Exchange Agritech Private Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh, AP) to launch a pilot Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled loan model for shrimp farmers.

Future Disbursement Target: Rs. 100 crores in Financial Year (FY) 2025–26(FY26) and Rs. 250 crores in FY27.
Farm Rating Score (FRS): An FRS will be developed to assess farmers’ creditworthiness, acting as a benchmark for the formal finance sector under the Unified Lending Interface (ULI) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Technology Integration: IoT devices will be deployed for real-time monitoring of water quality, feed usage, and disease control, thereby improving productivity and reducing risks.

RBL Bank Partnered with CAMSPay to Launch Digital Payment Gateway
On August 12, 2025, Mumbai (Maharashtra) based RBL Bank entered into a strategic partnership with CAMSPay, the payments unit of Computer Age Management Services (CAMS), to launch a new digital payment gateway platform targeting Indian enterprises.

In August 2025, Tata Group’s satellite communications firm, Nelco Limited, has partnered with French satellite service provider Eutelsat to deliver OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity across India.

  • This collaboration aims to provide secure, low-latency, and high-speed satellite internet services covering India’s landmass, territorial waters, and remote regions.

About World Steelpan Day:
Proposal : In 2022, the Government of T&T formally approached the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with a proposal to designate 11 August as World Steelpan Day, to be observed annually from 2023 onward.
Adoption : On 24 July 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/77/316, officially proclaiming 11 August of every year as World Steelpan Day.
Inaugural Celebration: The first-ever World Steelpan Day was observed on 11 August 2023.
PAN Month:
Celebration: Since 1992, Pan Trinbago Inc. T.C., headquartered in Port of Spain(PoS) (T&T), has celebrated Pan Month each August to honor the occasion when the steelpan was officially declared the National Musical Instrument of T&T.

International Youth Day 2025 – August 12The United Nations (UN’s) International Youth Day (IYD) is annually observed across the globe on 12th August, celebrates the role of young people and recognises their contributions to society. The day raises awareness about youth-related issues and promotes their active and equal participation in all areas of life.

  • Significance: The 2025 IYD holds special significance as it marks 10 years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and coincides with the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY).
  • 2025 Theme: The theme of IYD 2025 is “Local Youth Actions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Beyond.”

Background:
Origin: In 1991, the idea for IYD was proposed during the 1st session of the UN System’s World Youth Forum in Vienna, Austria.
Proclamation: In 1998, the 1st session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (WCMRY) adopted a resolution proclaiming 12 August as IYD.
UNGA Endorsement: In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 54th session endorsed the recommendation in its resolution A/RES/54/120 titled “Policies and Programmes Involving Youth.”

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Launches ‘Garuda Drishti’ to Detect Cyber Fraud and Hate Speech
In August, 2025, Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis launched “Garuda Drishti”, a social media monitoring and cyber-intelligence initiative, at Police Bhavan in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Development: The system was developed cost-effectively during the Cyber Hack 2025 Competition.
Infrastructure: Nagpur Police launched this initiative alongside a cutting-edge cyber lab equipped with 30 advanced workstations and forensic tools, including Call Data Record (CDR) analysis systems, mobile device examination units, and malware detection modules.

Karnataka Launches KATALYST to Set Up 500 New GCCs by 2029
On August 12, 2025, the Government of Karnataka launched “KATALYST”, a new Ease of Doing Business(EoDB) Cell, to fast-track the establishment of Global Capacity Centres (GCCs), in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • It was launched ahead of Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) 2025 which is scheduled to be held in November2025.
