138th Wimbledon Championships: Jannik Sinner Wins Men’s Singles, Iga Świątek Wins Women’s Singles

The 138th edition of the Wimbledon Championships, the world’s oldest tennis Grand Slam, was held from 30th June to 13th July 2025 on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom (UK).

  • Jannik Sinner of Italy won his maiden Wimbledon title by defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, becoming the first Italian man to win the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles title.
  • Iga Świątek of Poland won her maiden Wimbledon title, defeating Amanda Anisimova of the United States of America (USA), and became the first Polish player to win the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles title.

About Wimbledon Championships:

i.Wimbledon, established in 1877, is organised by the AELTC and the International Tennis Federation (ITF). This prestigious event features singles, doubles, mixed doubles, junior, wheelchair, and invitational tournaments.

ii.It is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, along with the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open.

iii.All matches are held on outdoor grass courts, and players must follow the traditional all-white dress code.

iv.The 2025 edition introduced automated electronic line-calling, replacing traditional human line judges for the first time in tournament history.

Prize Money:

i.AELTC announced a total prize money of 53.5 million pounds for Wimbledon 2025.

ii.The gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles champions each received 3 million pounds, while the runners-up received 1.52 million pounds.

iii.The winning doubles pair (gentlemen and ladies) received 680,000 pounds, while the mixed doubles champions received 135,000 pounds.

Other Events Winners:

Men’s Doubles:

i.Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool of Great Britain won the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Doubles title by defeating Rinky Hijikata of Australia and David Pel of the Netherlands in the final.

  • With this victory, they became the first all-British men’s doubles team to win the title in 89 years, since Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey won in 1936.

Women’s Doubles:

i.Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Elise Mertens of Belgium won the Wimbledon Ladies’ Doubles title by defeating Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan and Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia.

  • With this win, Kudermetova secured her first Grand Slam title as a pair, while Mertens claimed her second Wimbledon doubles title and the fifth Grand Slam doubles crown of her career.

Mixed Doubles:

i.Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic and Sem Verbeek of the Netherlands won the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles title by defeating Joe Salisbury of Great Britain and Luisa Stefani of Brazil.

  • This marked Siniaková’s first Grand Slam mixed doubles title, adding to her 10 women’s doubles Grand Slam titles, while Verbeek secured the first Grand Slam title of his career.

About Jannik Sinner:

i.Jannik Sinner became the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World No.1 on 10th June 2024, becoming the first Italian to achieve the top ATP ranking.

ii.His Wimbledon 2025 victory marked his fourth Grand Slam title overall, following his wins at the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, and the US Open in 2024.

About Iga Świątek:

i.Iga Świątek is currently ranked World No. 4 in women’s singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

ii.She holds a total of six Grand Slam titles, having won the French Open in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024, the US Open in 2022, and Wimbledon in 2025.

iii.She is the youngest player since Serena Williams (USA) to win Grand Slam titles on clay, hard, and grass courts, and only the third woman in the Open Era, after Margaret Court (Australia) and Monica Seles (Serbian–American), to win her first six Grand Slam finals.

iv.She also secured a bronze medal in women’s singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Polish player to win an Olympic medal in tennis.
