Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Launched ‘UMEED Portal’ for Digital Waqf Property Management

In June 2025, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA), launched the ‘Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal’, a centralized digital platform designed for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties across India, in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The UMEED portal, developed by MoMA, will mark a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India, enhancing transparency and providing significant benefits to the common Muslim community, especially women and children.
  • The portal, named after the UMEED Act of 1995, aims to simplify Waqf property management by enabling real-time data updates and giving the public access to verified information.

About Waqf:
i.Definition: Waqf refers to a permanent dedication of movable or immovable property by a Muslim for religious, pious, or charitable purposes recognized under Islamic law.
ii.Legal Framework:

  • Originally governed by the Waqf Act, 1995.
  • Further amended through the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the latest Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Key features of UMEED Portal:
i.Digital Inventory: Geo-tagging of all Waqf properties with 17-digit unique identification (ID) number.
ii.Grievance Redressal: Online system for efficient complaint resolution.
iii.Transparency Tools: Public access to verified records, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping integration, and transparent leasing tracking.
iv.Three-Tier Verification:

  • Maker: Mutawalli (property manager) initiates data entry.
  • Checker: District-level officer verifies details.
  • Approver: State/Union Territory (UT) Waqf Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) grants final approval.

Registration Protocol:
i.State Waqf Boards must register properties within six months (by 6 December 2025), with a possible one-to-two-month extension.
ii.Unregistered or undocumented properties are referred to the Waqf Tribunal.
iii.Properties under women’s ownership are ineligible for waqf declaration.

Highlights of Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev Moldokanovich’s Official Visit to India from 5 to 7 June 2025Kyrgyzstan’s Foreign Minister, Zheenbek Kulubaev Moldokanovich was on a three-day official visit to India from June 5 to 7, 2025, to participate in the 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue held in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • During his visit, he held talks with Indian officials to boost bilateral relations and promote greater regional cooperation.

Highlights of the visit:
i.On 5 June 2025, Zheenbek Kulubaev, MFA, Kyrgyz Republic, met Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), and signed the Protocol and exchanged Instrument of Ratification of the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between the Government of India (GOI) and the Government of Kyrgyz Republic in New Delhi, Delhi.
ii.On 6 June 2025, Zheenbek Kulubaev Moldokanovich participated in the 4th India- Central Asia Dialogue, under the chairship of Union Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), GoI, held in New Delhi, Delhi.
iii.Five Central Asian nations: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, alongside India, expressed interest in joint rare earth and critical minerals exploration to reduce global dependency, especially amid Chinese export restrictions.

PM Narendra Modi Virtually Addressed the ICDRI 2025 In June 2025, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi addressed the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI 2025) which was held from June 06 to 07, 2025 in Nice, France, through video conferencing.

  • CDRI 2025 marked the first time the conference was held in Europe, with CDRI serving as a co-chair.
  • The ICDRI 2025 was held on the theme “Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions,” focusing on strengthening infrastructure to withstand coastal and climate-related challenges.

Key Points:
i.The 7th edition of ICDRI was organised by New Delhi (Delhi) based Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) with the support of the Government of France.
ii.i.At the ICDRI 2025, the 54-member global coalition reaffirmed its commitment to advancing climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure across Africa.

DRDO Transfers Technologies of Nine Systems to 10 IndustriesIn June 2025, Ahilyanagar (Maharashtra) based Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), a Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory has transferred technologies of 9 systems to 10 industries, as a major step to establish a robust defence industrial ecosystem with the participation of both public and private sectors.

  • The technologies transferred to the industry include Product/ Technology Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Reconnaissance Vehicle(RV) (Tracked) Mk-II;Mounted Gun System(MGS); Anti-Terrorist Vehicle(ATV)-Tracked version; Full Trailer of 70t Tank Transporter for Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun Mk-1A;Expandable Mobile Shelter; Vajra-Riot Control Vehicle Unit Maintenance Vehicle(UMV) for MBT Arjun; Unit Repair Vehicle(URV) for MBT Arjun and Multi-Purpose Decontamination System(MPDS)

Key Points:
i.The licensing agreements were handed over in the presence of Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), and Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), during an event organised at VRDE.
ii.Hyderabad (Telangana) based QuBeats, Indian Quantum deeptech, has won the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Acing Development of Innovative Technologies 2.0 (ADITI 2.0) Defence Challenge to develop an indigenous Quantum Positioning System (QPS) for the Indian Navy(IN).

  • The award, which comes with a grant of Rs. 25 crore (USD 3 million) will enable QuBeats to build the next generation of high-precision quantum sensors.

ICRISAT, IFFCO and BBSSL Sign Agreement to Establish Beej Anusandhan Kendra in Gujarat
In June 2025, Hyderabad (Telangana) based the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), New Delhi(Delhi) based Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), and New Delhi based Bhartiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) formalized a Tripartite Service Agreement to establish the ‘Beej Anusandhan Kendra (BAK)’, a state-of-the-art seed research center in Kalol, Gujarat.

  • The BAK will function as a cutting-edge seed research and development centre to enhance India’s seed innovation ecosystem and advance sustainable agriculture.

Key Highlights:
i.ICRISAT is appointed as the Knowledge Partner. It will develop the Detailed Project Report (DPR) defining the center’s scientific framework, core functions, and design.
ii.IFFCO, a multi-state cooperative society, will construct the BAK facility.
iii.BBSSL, a seed cooperative, will operate the center.
Note: The partnership reinforces the vision outlined in the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ICRISAT and IFFCO during ICRISAT’s Foundation Day, aiming to boost agricultural innovation and seed research in India.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

IEA’s World Energy Investment Report 2025: China Leads Global Energy InvestmentsIn June 2025, Paris (France) based International Energy Agency (IEA) released the 10th edition of its ‘World Energy Investment Report’. The report highlighted that China is expected to account for over 25% (1/4th) of global energy investment in 2025, while, developing countries are struggling to raise capital for energy infrastructure.

  • The report further showed that over the last 10 years, the total share of China in global energy investment has increased from 25% to approximately 33%. 
  • As per the report, global investment on energy is projected to reach an unprecedented USD 3.3 trillion in 2025.

Key Points:
i.The report showed that investment in clean energy technologies which includes renewables, nuclear grids, storage, low-emission fuels etc. is set to hit a record USD 2.2 trillion in 2025.
ii.The report projected that investment in solar, both utility-scale and rooftop will reach USD 450 billion in 2025.
iii.As per the report, India has significantly increased its investment in RE sector, from USD 13 billion (in 2015) to USD 37 billion (in 2025).

  • During the same time period, India’s fossil fuel investments also increased from USD 41 billion to USD 49 billion.

India Showcases DPI as Global Benchmark at 11th BRICS Communications Ministers’ MeetingIn June 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Ministry of Communications (MoC), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India (GoI) showcased Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) of India as global benchmark for inclusive digital governance during the 11th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Communications Ministers’ Meeting, held in Brasilia, Brazil.

  • He delivered India’s statement, aligning India’s priorities with the BRICS Presidency of Brazil under the overarching theme of “Universal and Meaningful Connectivity, Space Sustainability, Environmental Sustainability, and the Digital Ecosystem.

i.MoS Dr. Pemmasani presented the DPI and highlighted the pivotal role of flagship initiatives like Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
in advancing universal and meaningful connectivity.

  • He underscored, Aadhar has empowered over 950 million citizens with a secure digital identity, enabling seamless access to essential public and private services.

Amul Partners with Spain’s COVAP to Launch Fresh Milk in EU
In June 2025, Gujarat (India) based Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), marketer of dairy products under the Amul brand, entered into a strategic partnership with Pozoblanco (Córdoba, Spain) based Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP) to launch Amul fresh milk in Spain and the European Union (EU).

  • The official launch event was hosted at the Embassy of India in Madrid (Spain) in the presence of dignitaries including Dinesh K. Patnaik, Ambassador of India to Spain.

i.This marks the first-ever launch of Amul fresh milk in the European market.
ii.The product rollout will begin in Madrid and Barcelona, followed by Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba in Spain and Lisbon in Portugal.
iii.The collaboration leverages GCMMF’s global dairy leadership and COVAP’s advanced dairy infrastructure.
iv.The initiative is in line with the United Nations(UN)’ designation of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the power of global cooperative partnerships and cross-continental collaboration.

AU SFB Partners with IFC to Integrate Climate Risk Management into Core Banking StrategyIn June 2025, Jaipur (Rajasthan) based AU Small Finance Bank (AU SFB), India’s largest SFB, has collaborated with Washington, D.C. (the United States of America, USA) based International Finance Corporation (IFC) which is a member of the World Bank Group (WBG), to undertake a comprehensive climate risk advisory program.

  • Through this strategic partnership, AU SFB will integrate climate risk considerations into its governance frameworks, strategic planning, risk management processes, and Environmental, Social, and Governance(ESG) disclosures, aligning with international best practices and changing regulatory expectations.

Key Points:
i.IFC will act as lead ESG and climate risk advisor of AU SFB. It will support AU SFB in addressing rising need for financial institutions to quantify, disclose, and manage climate-related financial risks.
ii.This climate risk advisory program for AU SFB will include 3 main components:

  • Physical Risk Assessment: It will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of AU SFB’s loan portfolio exposure to physical hazards like: floods, droughts, and extreme weather events. It will develop a risk heatmap to highlight the vulnerable geographies and sectors, using Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) climate scenario and long-term projections (up to time period of 2100).
  • Transition Risk Assessment: This component will examine potential financial exposure arising from policy shifts, market transitions. AU SFB will use Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) scenario to simulate these risks.
  • Financed Emission Calculation: Application of the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials methodology will be used to measure financed emissions (Scope3, Category-15) across various asset classes including corporate loans, Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) finance, real estate and sovereign bonds for Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25) to FY26.

iii.For technical execution of this program, IFC will work in partnership with Bengaluru (Karnataka) based StepChange, a specialized climate risk solutions provider, for analytical modeling and quantification.

In June 2025, Gurugram, Haryana based Serentica Renewables, India’s leading Commercial & Industrial (C&I) focused Renewable Energy (RE) company, has secured over USD 100 million in debt financing from global financial institutions: Utretcht, the Netherlands based Rabobank and Paris, France based Société Générale SA, to support the development of a 300 Mega Watt (MW) solar power project in Rajasthan.

  • With this, the company has successfully completed its second External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) financing.

i.Under this project, a Photovoltaic (PV) park will be developed to generate electricity for New Delhi, Delhi based Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), subsidiary of the Vedanta Group.
ii.As of 2025, the company has achieved a major milestone by reaching 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity, with ongoing projects across multiple Indian states, utilizing a combination of solar, wind, energy storage, and advanced grid balancing solutions.
iii.Established in 2022, Serentica Renewables is backed by a USD 650 million investment from New York (United States of America)-based KKR & Co. Inc. and is dedicated to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries by providing firm and dispatchable renewable energy solutions.

Canadian First Astronaut & Former Foreign Minister Marc Garneau Passed Away
In June 2025, the first Canadian astronaut in space and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Marc Garneau passed away at the age of 76 in Canada. He was born on 23 February 1949, in Quebec City, Canada.
Career Highlights:
i.In 1984, he became the first Canadian to travel to space, aboard the United States of America (USA) Space Shuttle Challenger as part of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s space shuttle program STS-41-G mission.

  • He completed three spaceflights in total: STS-41-G (1984), STS-77 (1996), and STS-97 (2000).

ii.From 2008 to 2023, Garneau was a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for a Montreal-area riding.
iii.He later served as a Member of Parliament (MP) and held various cabinet portfolios, including Minister of Transport (2015–2021) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2021) in the Canadian government, under Prime Minister(PM) Justin Trudeau.

i.Order of Canada (1984): Appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, for becoming the first Canadian in space.

  • The theme for WOD 2025, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”, highlights the ocean’s beauty, mystery, and its vital, irreplaceable role in supporting life on Earth.
  • As part of WOD 2025, UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) will be held in Nice, France from June 9 to 13, 2025 under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”

i.The idea of an ocean day was first proposed by Canada on 8 June 1992 during the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, UNCED).
ii.On 5 December 2008, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/63/111, officially designating 8 June as World Oceans Day.

TN CM M.K. Stalin Inaugurated Rs 475 Crore Agile Robots and SOL India Facilities 
In June 2025, Tamil Nadu(TN) Chief Minister (CM) Muthuvel Kurunanidhi (M.K.) Stalin virtually inaugurated two industrial facilities established by Munich (Germany) based Agile Robots SE and Chennai (Tamil Nadu)-based SOL India Private Limited at a combined investment of Rs 475 crore, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing and industrial ecosystem.

  • The event was held at the Chennai Secretariat by the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce.

The facilities include:

  • A Rs 300 crore Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven robotics manufacturing plant by Agile Robots SE at State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) Industrial Park, Irungattukottai, TN.
  • A Rs 175 crore air separation facility by SOL India Private Limited at SIPCOT Industrial Park, Ranipet, TN.

About Agile Robots SE Facility:
i.It has made its first major manufacturing investment in India through this project.
ii.The Irungattukottai plant focuses on manufacturing AI-powered robotic systems catering to sectors like automotive, consumer electronics, and healthcare.
About SOL India Pvt Ltd Facility:
i.It is a joint venture of Italy-based SOL SpA and Chennai (TN)-based SICGILSOL India Pvt Ltd.
ii.The plant produces industrial and medical-grade gases, including liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and high-purity gases for semiconductor and scientific applications.
iii.The Rs 175 crore investment fulfills commitments made during the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in 2019 and 2024.
