Asian Athletics Championships 2025: India Finishes 2nd with 24 Medals; China Tops

India finished second in the overall medal tally at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships with a commendable haul of 24 medals — 8 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze. China topped the standings with 32 medals (19 gold, 9 silver, 4 bronze).

  • The Asian Athletics Championships 2025, organized by the Pathum Thani (Thailand)-based Asian Athletics Association (AAA), took place from May 27 to 31, 2025, at the Gumi Civic Stadium in Gumi, South Korea.

Note: The 27th Asian Athletics Championships (2027) will be held in Xiamen, China

About 26th Asian Athletics Championships:

i.The event witnessed participation from over 2,000 athletes representing 43 nations, competing in 45 track and field events. India fielded over 60 athletes who competed in 30 events across various disciplines.

ii.This marked the third occasion South Korea hosted the championships, following the 1975 and 2005 editions.

iii.The Asian Athletics Championships have been held every two years since they began in 1973 in Marikina, Philippines.

Highlights of Indian Athletes:

i.Gulveer Singh achieved a remarkable feat by winning gold medals in both the men’s 10,000 meters (m) and 5,000m race.

ii.Avinash Sable ended India’s 36-year wait for a gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event.

iii.Tejaswin Shankar won a silver medal in the men’s decathlon at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, becoming the first Indian to win two medals in this event.

iii.India set two national records at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025:

  • Parul Chaudhary clocked 9:12.46 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, setting a new national record and securing the silver medal.
  • Animesh Kujur, a sprinter, created a national record in the men’s 200m, timing 20.32 seconds and securing the bronze medal.
