On 23 May 2025, Union Minister of State(MoS) Loganathan Murugan, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MPA) announced the release of a commemorative postage stamp in honour of a Tamil king, Perarasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar at the 1,350th birth anniversary celebration of the king at Government Memorial Complex, in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu (TN).
- The commemorative postage stamp will bear the image of the King Perarasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar. The postage stamp will be released in 2026.
- Union MoS announced the forthcoming construction of a manimandapam (memorial hall) to honor King Perarasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar, commemorating his legacy in Tamil history.
Key People:
Some of the key dignitaries including C. P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Maharashtra; TN Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President, Nainar Nagendran were also present.
About King Perarasar Mutharaiyar:
i.King Perarasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar(Suvaran Maran), a prominent tamil king who ruled (Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Pudukottai of Tamil Nadu,TN) region in the period during the 8th century.
ii.Perumpidugu is his title, Mutharaiyar is the dynasty name, and his name is Suvaran Maran.
iii.He fought 12 wars and remained undefeated.
DoP Released Special Cover for “Born to Fly” campaign :
In May 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department (TNFD) released a special cover for the “Born to Fly” campaign as part of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025(May 22) celebrations at the Head Post Office in Coimbatore, TN
- The event emphasized the importance of protecting birds, especially the 12 parakeet species native to India that are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
- The special cover was conceptualized by Joseph Reginald Louis, featuring an illustration by cartoonist G. Bala, which states buying, selling and caging of parakeets is “cruel” and “punishable offence”.
Key Points:
i.A brochure was released as part of the special cover featuring photographs of Alexandrine parakeet and Rose-ringed parakeet.
ii.Born to Fly campaign is supported by Animal Rescuers, Madurai (TN) based The Anaamalaiss Group, Coimbatore (Tamilnadu) based ARC parcel service, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Cotton City and Global Medi Exporters and Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Vidyalaya.
