On 19 May 2025, Government e Marketplace (GeM), India’s national public procurement portal, Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), marked its 8th anniversary with a reaffirmation of its transformative impact on inclusive economic growth and digital governance.
- GeM’s user base has seen a threefold increase in recent years, with over 1.64 lakh primary buyers and 4.2 lakh active sellers.
GeMAI Chatbot:
During the event, GeM has launched GeMAI, India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot in the public sector.
- It will enhance user experience by providing real-time assistance to the buyers and sellers.
- It also supports both voice and text interactions in 10 Indian Languages.
Key Milestones of GeM:
i.GeM has over 10 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), 1.3 lakh artisans and weavers, 1.84 lakh women entrepreneurs, and 31,000 startups as part of its ecosystem.
- It offers more than 10,000 product categories and over 330 services.
ii.Nearly 97% of all transactions on GeM are free from transaction charges.
- Additionally, fees have been reduced by 33% to 96% and capped at Rs. 3 lakhs for orders exceeding Rs. 10 crores, significantly down from the earlier Rs. 72.5 lakhs.
- For sellers with annual turnover below Rs. 1 crore, the caution money deposit has been cut by 60%, with full exemptions granted to selected groups.
iii.The platform is also enabling complex services such as drone-as-a-service for All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Geographic Information System (GIS).
- GeM has played a vital role in high-value procurement including Rs. 5,800 crores in equipment of the Akash Missile System (AMS), Rs. 5,085 crores in vaccine procurement.
iv.GeM has been adopted across all 36 States and Union Territories (UTs), with Uttar Pradesh (UP) leading the others.
- Eight states including Maharashtra, Manipur, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh (HP), Assam, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh have mandated GeM usage in their states.
v.GeM has deployed advanced analytics for real-time fraud detection, risk mitigation, and continuous monitoring.
vi.According to an independent assessment by the World Bank(WB), buyers on the GeM portal save about 9.75% on the median price.

The GeM replaced the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D), MoC&I. The platform is managed by GeM SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle), a 100% government-owned, non-profit company under the MoC&I.
