World Dance Day - April 29 2025International Dance Day, also known as World Dance Day, is celebrated annually across the globe on April 29 to raise public awareness about dance as an important art form, cultural expression, and educational tool. It also emphasizes the need for governments and educational institutions to integrate dance into the primary and higher education curriculum.

  • The observance is promoted by the Paris (France) based International Dance Council (CID) and the Shanghai (China) based International Theatre Institute (ITI), in association with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Background:

i.International Dance Day was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the ITI in collaboration with UNESCO to celebrate and honor the art of dance.

ii.The first International Dance Day was celebrated on April 29, 1982.

iii.The date April 29 was specifically chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), a renowned French dancer and choreographer, recognized as the pioneer of modern ballet.

2025 Message:

i.Each year, a renowned dancer or choreographer is chosen by ITI’s International Dance Committee to deliver a special message that highlights the significance and universal appeal of dance.

ii.In 2025 International Dance Day message is delivered by Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the most influential figures in contemporary dance.

  • His message emphasizes dance’s unique ability to connect people, express the inexpressible, and illuminate our shared human experience.

Classical Dances in India:

India currently has 9 classical dances recognised by the Sangeet Natak Academy and the Ministry of Culture (MoC), Government of India (GoI).

i.Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu, TN): Oldest South Indian form, expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas of Hinduism and Jainism.

ii.Kathak (Uttar Pradesh, UP): Storytelling through rhythmic footwork, influenced by Krishna Leela and Mughal courts.

iii.Odissi (Odisha): Graceful movements inspired by Jagannath Temple sculptures.

iv.Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh, AP): A dance-drama combining dialogue, expressions, and storytelling.

v.Mohiniyattam (Kerala): Lyrical dance depicting Mohini, the female enchantress avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

vi.Kathakali (Kerala): Recognized for elaborate costumes, painted faces, and epic storytelling.

vii.Manipuri (Manipur): Revolves around the Rasa Leela of Radha and Krishna with gentle movements.

viii.Sattriya (Assam): Founded by Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardev, blending devotion and classical rigor.

ix.Chhau (Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, WB): Masked martial dance portraying mythological stories.
