ECONOMY & BUSINESS

ICRA: India’s GDP Growth Likely to Slip at 6.5% in Q2FY25, Retains 7%  for FY25India's GDP growth likely to slip at 6.5%, maintains 7% estimate for FY25 ICRAIndia’s Credit Rating Agency, ICRA Limited (formerly Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency of India Limited) has projected that India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to decline to 6.5% in 2nd  Quarter (Q2: July-September) of  Financial Year 2024-25(FY 25) from 6.7%% in Q1 of FY25.

  • This decrease in India’s GDP is mainly due to heavy rains and weaker corporate performance.
  • However, it has retained its growth estimate for full FY25 at 7% as the services sector is expected to improve and also back-ended recovery is anticipated.

Key Findings:
i.The growth in Gross Value Added (GVA) is estimated to decrease from 6.8% (in Q1FY25) to 6.6% (in Q2 FY25).

  • This is due to lower growth in industrial (from +8.3% to +5.5%), amid a pick-up in services (from +7.2% to +7.8%) sectors, and increase in the agricultural GVA growth (from +2.0% to 3.5%).

ii.It has estimated that the growth in net indirect taxes (in nominal terms) is expected to increase marginally to 9.0%-9.5% in Q2FY25 from 8.0% in Q1FY25.
iii.It has projected that industrial GVA growth to be 5.5% in Q2FY25. This is driven by the growth of other sub-sectors led by electricity, mining and quarrying, manufacturing, and construction.
Other Key Points:
i.As per ICRA, the investment activity in India improved in Q2FY25 compared to Q1FY25, while remaining sluggish amid slow execution of infrastructure projects due to heavy rains.
ii.According to ICRA, there is considerable headroom for the Government of India (GoI)’s capital expenditure, which requires to expand by 52% in Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) terms in 2nd Half (H2) of FY25 to meet the Budget Estimate for the full financial year.
iii. The GoI’s capital expenditure reverted to a Y-o-Y expansion of 10.3% (Rs 2.3 trillion) in Q2FY25, following the contraction of 35.0% in Q1FY25.

  • While the cumulative capital outlay and total net lending of the 22 state governments (excluding Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Jharkhand, Manipur and Odisha) increased by 2.1% Y-o-Y in QFY25, however, the pace of expansion remained stagnated.

iv.ICRA mentioned that new project announcements witnessed a healthy rebound to Rs 6.7 trillion in Q2FY25 from multi-quarter low of Rs 2.2 trillion in Q1FY25.
