NTPC celebrates 50th Raising Day, marking five decades of powering India’s GrowthNTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation, India’s leading power generation company, celebrated its 50th Raising Day on 7th November 2024 recognizing five decades of remarkable growth, innovation, and contribution to India’s power sector.

  • The celebrations took place at the Engineering Office Complex (EOC), Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP) wherein Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) hoisted the NTPC flag in the presence of Directors on the Board and senior officials.

Highlights

i.NTPC’s 50-year logo was also launched on the occasion reflecting NTPC’s everlasting commitment to growth and excellence and a reminder of the 50-years of powering growth and creation of infinite possibilities.

ii.The celebration also honored outstanding achievements of NTPC employees’ children.

iii.Moreover, new Information Technology (IT) applications and a comic book on NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM)—a Corporate Social  Responsibility (CSR) initiative that has empowered over 10,000 girls from rural areas were also launched during the celebrations.

Background

i.NTPC Limited is an Indian Maharatna central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the ownership of the Ministry of Power and the Government of India.

ii.The company was founded on 7 November 1975 by India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited.

  • In October 2005, the company’s name was changed from National Thermal Power Corporation Limited to NTPC Limited.

iii.NTPC has a present installed capacity of 76475.68 Megawatt (MW).

  • It also targeting to become a 130-Gigawatt (GW) company by 2032.

i.NTPC has securing the 3rd rank globally at the Association for Talent Development (ATD) BEST Award 2024 and is the only PSU to have received this award seven times in the past eight years.

ii. NTPC also won three awards at the Economic Times (ETHRWorld) Future Skills Awards 2024 for its innovation and achievement in workplace learning. The awards were won in the following categories:

  • Best Use of AI/AR/VR in Learning & Upskilling – Gold
  • Best Advance in Creating an Extended Enterprise Learning Program – Gold
  • Best Use of Games or Simulations in L&D – Silver

iii.NTPC Limited has been recognized as one of the “World’s Best Employers 2024” in the Forbes World’s Best Employers 2024 List released in October, 2024.

  • It is among the Top 500 companies in the world in this World ranking and is the only Indian Maharatna CPSE to gain a position in the list.

NTPC unveils hydrogen-fuel bus, CO2-to-methanol plant

i.NTPC has launched its hydrogen-fuel buses which will be operated in Leh, on the occasion of its 50th foundation day.

  • NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh virtually launched the hydrogen-fuel buses.

ii.The successful synthesis of Carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from flue gas with hydrogen produced from a Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, which was then converted into methanol at NTPC’s Vindhyachal plant was also announced at the event.

  • This was an innovative step in carbon management and sustainable fuel production as both the CO2 capture plant and the CO2-to-methanol plant are the first of their kind in the world.

iii.NTPC has also been working on Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

  • It has developed and tested ‘first indigenous catalyst’ for Methanol Synthesis and has also made remarkable progress with hydrogen, carbon capture, and other innovative technologies.
