Hurun India Philanthropy list 2024 Shiv Nadar TopsThe 11th edition of the Hurun India Philanthropy list has been released by the EdelGive Foundation in partnership with Hurun India on 7th November 2024 in which  Shiv Nadar (79) and his family have retained the title of India’s Most Generous for the third time in five years as he donated  Rs 2,153 crore during the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24.

  • As per the report, Shiv Nadar, founder-chairman of HCL Technologies, donated Rs 5.9 crore every day and his donation is primarily focused on education, uplifting communities and technology-driven initiatives.
  • The 2nd spot on the list was occupied by Chairman and Managing director(CMD) of Reliance Industries Limited, Mukesh Ambani who donated Rs 407 crore.
  • The 3rd spot was secured by the Bajaj family who climbed three spots this year with a donation of Rs 352 crore, marking a 33% increase from the previous year.

Note:

i.In the personal philanthropy list, Shiv Nadar again tops, personally donated Rs.1,992 crore (out of the total Rs 2,153 crore given via his company’s charitable trust, the Shiv Nadar Foundation Institutions).

ii.Following him are Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and Indo Metal Injection Molding (MIM) Tec chairman Krishna Chivukula, who donated Rs 307 crore and Rs 228 crore, respectively.

About the Hurun India Philanthropy list 2024:

i.The EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 shows India’s remarkable givers and their growing importance in India as philanthropists towards nation-building.

ii.Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalents from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

iii.The report has derived its data from the Hurun India Rich List, a ranking of 1,539 wealthiest individuals in India, released in August 2024 for the thirteenth year.

iv.The threshold for entering the top 10 philanthropists has now doubled to Rs 154 crore, up from Rs 83 crore just five years ago.

v.Additionally, the number of individuals donating over Rs 100 crore has increased to 18, compared to 9 in 2019.

Key Highlights :

i.This edition of the list had 96 new entrants, bringing the total number of philanthropists in the country to 203, who donated Rs.8,783 crore in 2023-24. The top 10 collectively contributed Rs.4,625 crore, which is 53% of the overall donations on the list.

  • The total donations by new entrants amounted to Rs 1,556 crore.

ii.18 philanthropists made annual donations of over Rs.100 crore, 30 of over Rs.50 crore, and 61 donated over Rs.20 crore.

iii.Several new philanthropists also entered in the top rankings:

  • Krishna Chivukula, chairman of Indo MIM, was the most generous new entrant, donating Rs 228 crore towards education and community welfare.
  • Susmita & Subroto Bagchi, with a donation of Rs 179 crore, re-entered the top 10, (9th spot) increasing their contribution by Rs 69 crore from the previous year.

iv.Nandan Nilekani has topped the list for the biggest incremental contribution with an increase of Rs 118 crore in his annual donation.

  • This was closely followed by Shiv Nadar, who raised his donation by Rs 111 crore.

v.Education was the prime cause of donation, with 123 philanthropists donating a total of Rs.3,680 crore. It was followed by healthcare, which saw a cumulative donation of Rs.626 crore.

  • The pharma industry had the highest share of philanthropists on the list at 16%, followed by chemicals and petrochemicals at 9%.

vi.In terms of region, Maharashtra had the highest percentage of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR)contributions, followed by Gujarat, highlighting the focus on states with more developed industrial sectors.

vii.Mumbai remained the city with the highest concentration of philanthropists in the list, accounting for 30% of the total, followed by New Delhi at 19%, and Bengaluru at 9%.

viii.The report also showed a considerable increase in self-made philanthropists, with 109 new self-made individuals featured in 2024, up by 43 from last year.

Nikhil Kamath youngest philanthropist in Hurun’s list

i.Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath has been listed as one of the youngest philanthropists in the EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 at 38 years.

  • His contributions through the Rainmatter Foundation of Rs 120 crore place him amongst the top young philanthropists in India and is known for his contributions in sustainability and environment.

ii. He has joined other young philanthropists like Vivek Vakil (35) of Asian Paints and Adar Poonawalla (43) of the Villoo Poonawalla Charitable Foundation.

  • Adar Poonawalla is the highest contributor among the young philanthropists with Rs 142 crore.

iii.Nikhil Kamath and his brother Nitin Kamath (45) are 15th on the list of those who have donated more than Rs 100 crore.

Rohini Nilekani India’s most generous woman:

i.According to the list, Rohini Nilekani (69),co-founder and director of EkStep, has been named as India’s most generous woman with a personal donation of Rs.154 crores and led the list of Indian women philanthropists.

  • She ranks tenth among India’s top philanthropists and donated 42 lakhs per day.
  • Together with her husband, Nandan Nilekani, the couple has contributed a total of over Rs.450 crores to various causes this year.

ii.The list has featured 21 women philanthropists who collectively contributed Rs.724 crore, representing 8% of the total donations in the overall list of 2024.
