The New Zealand tour of India 2024 was a 3-test series that was held from 16th October – 5th November 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma (India) and Tom Latham (New Zealand).
- The first test was held from 16th October to 20th October at Mangalam Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
- The second test match was held from 24th October to 30th October at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
- The third test was held from 1st November to 5th November at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
- The Test series was a part of the 2023–2025 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship.
New Zealand gave India first-ever 3-0 Test series whitewash at home
i.New Zealand created history and became the first team to defeat India in a three-match Test series and to have won a Test series in India in 69 years.
- The Kiwis won the first Test in Bengaluru by 8 wickets and the second Test in Pune by 113 runs.
ii.A target of 147 runs was set by New Zealand on the 3rd and final day but India was bowled out for 121.
iii.India suffered a Test series whitewash after 24 years and a series loss after 12 years as New Zealand defeated India by 3-0.
India recorded third-lowest Test score; lowest at home
i.India scored a new low mark after being bowled out for 46, their lowest Test score ever at home.
- India was last bowled out for 36, their lowest Test score ever at Adelaide during the 2020-21 tour of Australia.
ii.This is also the first time four of the top seven India batters were dismissed for a duck in a home Test.
iii. Overall, India’s 46 is now the lowest total in Asia, surpassing 53 by West Indies against Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1986, and then by Pakistan against Australia at Sharjah in 2002.
iv.India’s lowest Test total at home was seen in 1987 against West Indies scoring 75 in Delhi. India suffered a similar situation after scoring 76 against South Africa in Ahmedabad in 2008.
Virat Kohli scored his 9,000th run in Tests
i.Virat Kohli joined an elite group of cricketers by scoring his 9,000th run in Test matches during day three of the Test against New Zealand.
ii.He became the 18th player to score 9,000 runs in Test cricket and joined Joe Root and Steve Smith as the only active players in this club.
iii.He also became the fourth Indian to achieve this milestone after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
Rishabh Pant sets new record scoring 50 in 36 balls
i.Rishabh Pant scored the fastest half-century against New Zealand (50-run mark in just 36 balls) during the third and final Test of the three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium.
- Rishabh Pant also holds the record for the fastest Test fifty by an Indian batter – 28 balls against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in 2022.
- Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq holds the highest record of 21 balls against Australia in 2014 in Abu Dhabi.
ii.Before this, the record was with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal who achieved this milestone in the second Test of the three-match Test series against New Zealand.
