India and WHO Jointly Hosted 19th ICDRA in New DelhiThe Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India hosted the 19th International Conference of Drug Regulatory Authorities (ICDRA) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO). This marks the first time India has hosted the ICDRA since its inception in 1980.
- The conference was held from 14th October to 18th October 2024 at Yashobhoomi, India International Convention Centre (IICC) in New Delhi, Delhi.
- Theme of 19th ICDRA: “Smart Regulation: Delivering Quality Assured Medical Products for All”.
i.The conference was inaugurated by Union Minister Jagat Praksah Nadda, MoH&FW.
ii.The first 2 days of the conference were designated as PRE-ICDRA and the remaining 3 days were designated as ICDRA.

ESIC’s Medical Benefit Council Approved the Convergence of ESI Scheme & AB-PMJAY
Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)‘s Medical Benefit Council has approved the convergence of the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme with Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to improve healthcare access for ESI beneficiaries.
- The decision was made during the 86th Medical Benefit Council meeting chaired by Ashok Kumar Singh, Director General (DG) of ESIC in New Delhi, Delhi.
i.This aims to enhance medical services and includes initiatives like annual health check-ups and awareness camps for early diagnosis and improved healthcare delivery.
ii.The council also approved the implementation of the Common Support Mission (CSM) for states to improve and strengthen ESI’s medical service delivery system in states with a focus on the Insured Persons(IP) centric approach.
Note: AB PM-JAY is the world’s largest health assurance scheme was launched on September 23, 2018, aims at provide a health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families that form the bottom 40% of the Indian population.

PM Modi visit to Russia from 22nd to 23rd October to attend 16th BRICS summit in KazanPrime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi visited Russia from 22nd to 23rd October 2024 to attend the 16th BRICS(Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Summit in Kazan, Russia following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- The BRICS Summit 2024 was held under the chairmanship of the Russian Federation in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24, 2024. The summit was chaired by Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.
- The theme of the Summit was ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security, which aimed to provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues.
- The 16th BRICS Summit ended with the adoption of the Kazan Declaration, a comprehensive document outlining key areas of cooperation and the bloc’s unified stance on global issues.

RBI Adds 13 New Firms to its Alert List of Unauthorized Forex Trading PlatformsOn 22nd October 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) added 13 more firms to its “alert list” of unauthorized forex trading platforms. With this, the total number of entities in the RBI alert list has expanded to 88.
- As per the RBI, the entities in the alert list are neither authorised to deal in forex under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999(FEMA) nor authorised to operate Electronic Trading Platforms (ETPs) for forex transactions under the Electronic Trading Platforms (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2018.
Key Points:
i.The Alert list also includes the names of entities/platforms/websites which are promoting unauthorized entities or ETPs, including through advertisements of such unauthorized entities or claiming to be providing training or advisory services. However, this list is not exhaustive.
ii.RBI further clarified that if an entity does not appear on the list then it should not be assumed to be authorised by the RBI.
iii.As per the RBI direction, the authorisation status of any person or ETP can be ascertained from the list of authorised persons and authorised ETPs.

HDFC inaugurates its first branch in Singapore to expand financial services
HDFC Bank Limited inaugurated its first branch in Singapore to provide banking services in Singapore. HDFC Bank has received the wholesale banking license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) with effect from 15th October 2024.
- The branch was inaugurated by Rakesh Singh, Group Head of International Banking, Investment Banking, Private Banking, Digital Ecosystems and Banking as a Service (BaaS), HDFC Bank in the presence of Gaurav Khandelwal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDFC Bank, Singapore.
- The HDFC bank will now offer a wide range of financial products and services to residents of Singapore.
- Now, HDFC’s international operations includes five branches, one each in Hong Kong, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates(UAE), Singapore and an IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) in Gujarat International Finance Tec City(GIFT City), India.

Duma Boko of UDC declared as 6th President of BotswanaOn November 1, 2024, the 54-year-old Duma Gideon Boko of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition was declared as the 6th President of Botswana by getting 25 out of 61 parliamentary seats.
- He defeated Incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masis of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) who secured only one seat. BDP had been in power since the country’s independence in 1966.

i.Born on December 31, 1969, Duma Boko, a human rights lawyer began his career as the law professor at University of Botswana (UB) in1993.
ii.He became the leader of the Botswana National Front (BNF) in 2010 and was instrumental in forming the UDC in 2012. He has run for President in previous elections in 2014 and 2019.
- He has served as the President of both the BNF and the UDC.
iii.He has authored several publications addressing constitutional issues and human rights in Botswana. Notable works include:

PFRDA Appointed Chitra Jayasimha as Chairperson of NPS Trust Board
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has appointed Chitra Jayasimha, who has been serving as Trustee of National Pension System (NPS) Trust Board since 2020, as the chairperson of the Board of NPS Trust with effect from 17th October, 2024.
- She succeeded Venkata Rao Yadagini, who was appointed to the position of NPS Trust chairman on 12th December, 2023.
About Chitra Jayasimha:
i.She is a qualified actuary, a fellow member of Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI), Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), the United Kingdom (UK) and Insurance Institute of India.
ii.She has an extensive experience of more than 17 years working in various functions at senior levels in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
iii.She had also served as the chairperson of the Advisory Group on Pension, Employee Benefits, and Social Security Schemes of the Institute of Actuaries of India for a period of over 9 years.
iv.She is founder, director and consulting Actuary of Universal Actuaries and Benefit Consultants. She was also appointed as Actuary at Sanima Reliance Life (Nepal) and General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC) Reinsurance Company Limited (Bhutan), among others.
v.In August 2017, she had brought out a detailed research report on NPS Superannuation and has written various white papers on NPS and other retirement benefits.
ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS
Adani’s Ambuja Cement Limited to Acquire 46.8% Stake in Orient Cement for Rs 8,100 CroreOn 22nd October 2024, Ambuja Cements Limited (ACL), leading cement company in India and part of the Adani Group announced the signing of a binding agreement to acquire a 46.8% stakes of Orient Cement Limited (OCL), owned by C.K. Birla Group, for an equity value of Rs 8,100 crore. The acquisition will be completely funded through internal accruals.
- This marks Ambuja Cement’s 4th acquisition since its promoter change and the 3rd acquisition of the ongoing Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).
Key Points:
i.ACL will make an open offer at Rs 395.40 per share to the public shareholders of OCL in accordance with the provisions of the Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers (SAST) regulations.
ii.The acquisition will be carried out in 2 phases i.e. In 1st phase, ACL will acquire 37.9% from OCL’s promoters and an additional 8.9% stakes from certain public shareholders.
- ACL also plans to launch an open offer for 26% of OCL’s expanded share capital at the same price per share.
Significance:
i.Following the acquisition of OCL, ACL is set to reach 100 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) cement capacity in FY25 and will bring it closer to its long-term target of reaching 140 MTPA by 2028.
- This acquisition will further help Adani’s cement to expand its presence in core markets and improve its pan-India market share by 2%.
ii.The deal will increase the cement capacity of ACL to 16.6 MTPA, including 8.5 MTPA currently operational, and 8.1 MTPA under development.
Note: Currently, OCL has 5.6 MTPA clinker capacity and 8.5 MTPA cement capacity, and has received statutory clearance to raise the clinker capacity by another 6.0 MTPA and cement capacity by another 8.1 MTPA.
Adani’s Group Cement Acquisition:
i.In May 2022, Adani Group acquired Ambuja Cements and ACC Limited from Switzerland-based Holcim for USD 10.5 billion.
ii.In August 2023, Ambuja Cements bought Sanghi Industries in Gujarat, with production capacity of 6.1 MTPA for Rs 5,000 crore.
iii.In June 2024, Ambuja Cements acquired Hyderabad (Telangana)-based Penna Cement, India’s 2nd largest cement manufacturing company at an enterprise value of Rs 10,422 crore.

KMBL to Acquire Standard Chartered India’s Rs 4,100 Crore Personal Loan Book
On 18th October 2024, Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (KMBL), a leading Indian private sector bank announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Standard Chartered Bank India’s personal loan book.
- As of 30th September 2024, the proposed transaction includes loans of around Rs 4,100 crore (nearly USD 490 million) and it consists of loans classified as “Standard Loans” as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.
i.The transaction will be completed over the next 3 months, subject to regulatory and other approvals and the satisfaction or waiver of customary closing conditions.
ii.KMBL will buy the loan book, with the outstanding amount finalized closer to the completion date.

Deepika Kumari Wins Silver Medal in Archery World Cup Final 2024Deepika Kumari, Indian Female archer has secured a silver medal in the women’s recurve event at the Tlaxcala 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final held in Tlaxcala, Mexico on October 19-20, 2024. This achievement marks her 6th medal at the World Cup Finals. This was her 9th appearance in the finals.

i.Deepika Kumari defeated Yang Xiaolei of China 6-0 in the quarter-finals and Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia 6-4 in the semi-finals.
