SIMBEX 2024: India-Singapore Naval Exercise Begins Off Visakhapatnam,APIndia-Singapore joint naval exercise (SIMBEX) 2024On October 23-29, 2024, the 31st edition of joint Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) 2024 conducted off the coast of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This annual event aimed at enhancing naval cooperation between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).

  • The opening ceremony was conducted onboard Indian Naval Ship (INS) Shivalik.
  • The exercise is conducted in two phases – the Harbour Phase from 23 to 25 October at Visakhapatnam,Andhrapradesh and the Sea Phase from 28 to 29 October in the Bay of Bengal.

Objective:
i.Strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Singapore.
ii.Enhancing interoperability and maritime domain awareness.
iii.Fostering cooperation to address common maritime challenges.
Participants:
IN: Shivalik-class frigate INS Shivalik, which had an MH-60R Seahawk on board, along with a Sindhughosh-class submarine, a P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, and two MiG-29K fighter jets.
RSN: Formidable-class frigate RSS Tenacious, equipped with an S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter.
Phases of Exercise:
i.Harbour Phase (October 23-25): It is conducted at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. This phase focuses on fostering interpersonal relationships through cultural exchanges and sports activities among personnel from both navies. It includes subject matter expert exchanges and pre-sail briefings.
ii.Sea Phase (October 28-29): Held in the Bay of Bengal, this phase involved advanced naval drills, including live weapon firings, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training, and tactical maneuvers. RSN has deployed its ship, RSS Tenacious, along with helicopters for these exercises.
About SIMBEX:
SIMBEX began in 1994 as Exercise Lion King and has evolved into the longest continuous naval exercise conducted by the IN with any foreign navy.This reflects the strong and lasting naval partnership between India and Singapore.

MoD Signs Contract for Six Air Cushion Vehicles for ICGMoD inks Rs 387.44 crore contract with Chowgule & Company Pvt. Ltd., Goa for six Air Cushion Vehicles for Indian Coast GuardOn October 24, 2024, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) entered into a Rs.387.44 crore contract with Goa based Chowgule & Company Private Limited, to procure 6 Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

  • This contract falls under the ‘Buy {Indian} category, a classification that emphasizes purchasing from Indian companies and fostering local production.

Key points:
i.In line with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which promotes self-reliance across sectors, these ACVs, also known as Hovercrafts, will be manufactured entirely within India.
ii.This is a significant first in the nation’s history for Air Cushion Vehicles production, marking a step forward for the indigenous shipbuilding industry

  • This project not only boost the nation’s technical and manufacturing capabilities, but it also promotes growth in related sectors, especially benefiting the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) segment, which will play a key role in supporting the manufacturing process.

iii.The new ACVs, are intended to upgrade the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), a critical agency for India’s coastal and maritime security. These vehicles are designed for multi-functional use, enhancing the Coast Guard’s versatility in various operations.
Key roles include:

  • High-speed patrolling along India’s coastlines to monitor and secure the maritime environment.
  • Assisting in gathering information and ensuring security across coastal areas.
  • Intercepting potential threats or unauthorized vessels within Indian waters.
  • Conducting rapid rescue operations for those in distress at sea.
  • Offering aid to ships or crafts facing difficulties in coastal or shallow waters.

Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs):
Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs),commonly known as Hovercrafts are amphibious vehicles designed to operate over various terrains, including water, mud, sand, and ice.

  • They use a cushion of high-pressure air created beneath the vehicle to hover slightly above the surface, allowing for smooth travel across multiple surfaces without direct contact.

Israel Joins Asian Development Bank as 69th Member CountryIsrael Joins Asian Development Bank (ADB) as 69th Member Country (1)Israel has officially joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as its 69th member and 20th non-regional member with effect from 27th September 2024, after completing all membership requirements.

  • Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich will represent Israel at the ADB.

Background:
i.Israel formally submitted its application for ADB membership in January 2022.
ii.The ADB Board of Governors approved Israel’s membership on 14th April 2022 through Resolution no. 414: “Membership of Israel and Increase in Authorized Capital Stock”.
ii.By joining the ADB, Israel aims to expand its influence in Asia and foster closer strategic ties and trade relationships.
ADB Membership requirements:
i.To become a member of the ADB, the prospective country must be a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) or a non-regional developed country.
ii.Membership requires approval from existing member countries, typically through a vote by the Board of Governors, which consists of representatives from all member nations.
iii.The applicant must agree to adhere to ADB’s operational policies, including commitments to economic development, poverty reduction, and sustainable growth.

NIPFP Lowers India’s GDP Growth Forecast for FY25 to 6.9-7.1%Economic think-tank NIPFP cuts India's FY25 GDP growth forecast to 6.9-7.1%On 25th October 2024, New Delhi (Delhi)-based Economic think tank National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) released its “FY2024-25: Mid Year Macroeconomic Review”. It has lowered India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast to  6.9-7.1% for Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25), from its previous estimate of 7.1-7.4% during the April review.

  • As per the report, Capex contracted by 19.5% during April-August 2024 compared to April-August 2023 due to election code of conduct.

i.According to the report, aggregate demand growth (GDP) in 1st Quarter (Q1: April-June) of FY25 is moderated at 6.6% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y), due to contraction in government spending and net exports, despite accelerated private consumption growth.
ii.The report projected that average annual inflation will remain at 4.3%, slightly higher than the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) target of 4%.

European Parliament Named María Corina Machado and Edmundo González as Winners for 2024 Sakharov PrizeThe European Parliament Awards the Sakharov Prize to María Corina MachadoOn 24th October 2024, Roberta Metsola, President of European Parliament named María Corina Machado Parisca, the leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela, and Edmundo González Urrutia, Venezuelan former presidential candidate, as the winners of ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2024 (Sakharov Prize)’, the highest tribute paid by the European Union (EU) to human rights work.

  • This award is given in recognition of their efforts to restore democracy and freedom in Venezuela.
  • The official award ceremony for the Sakharov Prize 2024 will be held on 18th December, 2024 in Strasbourg, France, during the European Parliament’s plenary session.

  • She won the Wimbledon in 2004, the United States (US) Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and the French Open in 2012 and 2014.

ii.She has also won the silver in women’s singles at the 2012 London Olympics.
iii.She competed on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)Tour from 2001 to 2020.
iv.She became the first Russian woman to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in 2005 and held the position for 21 weeks.

Rashmika Mandanna Appointed as the National Ambassador to Promote Cyber Safety
Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna has been appointed as the National Ambassador for Cyber Safety by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

  • Rashmika Mandanna will spread a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about cyber threats, cyberbullying and Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated malicious content.
  • Her personal experience with cybercrime adds credibility to her mission of promoting online safety across India.

Note: The I4C was established in 2018 by the MOHA in (New Delhi) Delhi to provide a coordinated and comprehensive framework for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to effectively address cybercrime, serving as the nodal point for combating such threats across India.

Indian Navy Launches GRSE-Built Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel, INS AbhayNavy Launches GRSE’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel ‘Abhay’The Indian Navy (IN) launched ‘Abhay’, the 7th vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).  The launch took place at L&T Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu (TN) and was presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command/ FOC-in-C (East).

  • Sandhya Pendharkar, President Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA), Eastern Region, launched the ship.
  • The contract for constructing eight ASW SWC vessels was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in April 2019.
  • This project aligns with Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, with over 80% indigenous content.
  • The Arnala-class ships are set to replace the Indian Navy’s active Abhay-class ASW corvettes. They are specifically designed for anti-submarine warfare in coastal areas and can perform low-intensity maritime operations as well as mine-laying tasks.

Vessel Specifications:

  • Length: Approximately 77 meters.
  • Width: About 10.5 meters.
  • Maximum Speed: Up to 25 knots.
  • Endurance: Capable of covering 1,800 nautical miles.

Key Points:
i.The ASW SWC vessels are equipped with advanced surveillance systems, including a Hull Mounted Sonar and a Low-Frequency Variable Depth Sonar, these ships enhance underwater detection capabilities.
ii.The vessels feature a robust anti-submarine warfare suite comprising lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets, and mines.
iii.They are also armed with a 30 mm Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) and 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Control Guns, ensuring effective defense against aerial and surface threats.
iv.INS Abhay was commissioned in 1989.
iv.The 5th and 6th ships namely Agray and Akshay respectively were launched in March 2024.

China Successfully Launched new satellite groupYaogan-43 03
China successfully launched a new group of satellites known as the Yaogan-43 03 satellite group onboard the Long March-2C carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, China.

  • This mission marks the 542nd flight of the Long March rocket series.
  • The Yaogan-43 03 satellites are primarily intended for testing new technologies related to low-orbit constellations, which will enhance China’s capabilities in various applications, including remote sensing and communication.

Wrestling, Cricket, Hockey and Other Major Sports Dropped from Commonwealth Games 2026Commonwealth Games 2026 drops major sports On 22nd October 2024, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced that wrestling, badminton, hockey, cricket and shooting, among other major sports, have been dropped from the Commonwealth Games 2026 (CWG 2026).The 23rd edition of CWG is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 23rd July, 2026 to 2nd August, 2026.

  • The excluded sports for CWG 2026 are hockey, cricket, badminton, wrestling, table tennis (TT), diving, rugby sevens, beach volleyball, mountain biking, squash and rhythmic gymnastics.

i.With this, total number of sport events has reduced to 10 compared to 19 sports events at the 2022 Birmingham CWG.
ii.CWG 2026 will now feature 10 sports including: Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls, and Para Bowls, and 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball.

  • The tournament is scheduled to take place from 13th to 19th January 2025 in New Delhi, Delhi.  The event will witness the participation from 24 countries in both men’s and women’s competitions.

Eminent Physicist and Padma Shri Awardee Rohini Godbole Passes Away at 71Renowned physicist, gender equity proponent and Padma Awardee Rohini Godbole dies at 71Renowned physicist Dr. Rohini Godbole, who played a phenomenal role in both science and gender equality, passed away at the age of 71 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • With a distinguished academic career, she significantly contributed to the field of elementary particle physics and was an outspoken advocate for women in science.

About Rohini Godbole:
She was born in Pune,Maharashtra in 1952. Godbole’s academic path began at College Sir Parashurambhau (SP) College, Pune, Maharashtra, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, where she received the institute’s silver medal.
Academic Career and Research Contributions:
i.In 1995, she joined the Centre for High Energy Physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, dedicating over 25 years to research there. Even after retirement in 2018, she continued as an honorary professor.
ii.A specialist in elementary particle physics, field theory, and phenomenology, she critiqued the Standard Model of particle physics and promoted research on antimatter.
iii.Her expertise also led her to contribute to accelerator design at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva,Switzerland.
Advocacy for Women in Science:
i.Godbole was an ardent advocate for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
ii.She co-authored the INSA Report: Access of Indian Women to Careers in Science,a first-of-its-kind document addressing the challenges women face in the field.
Book-To inspire future generations, she also co-edited LILAVATI’S DAUGHTERS- The Women Scientists of India (2008) along with Ram Ramaswamy,, a collection of essays on Indian women scientists.
Awards and Recognitions:
For her outstanding contributions, she received the Padma Shri in 2019, the Ordre national du Mérite (French National Order of Merit) in 2021, and Karnataka’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Technology.

Maharashtra Govt Renames Maharashtra State Skills University after Ratan Tata
The Maharashtra government has announced that the Maharashtra State Skills University will be renamed as “Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata Skills University” in honour of the late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata for his dedication to social causes, education, and skill development across India.
i.This announcement follows a recent proposal by the Maharashtra Cabinet led by Chief Minister (CM) Eknath Shinde urging the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, to Ratan Tata.
iii. The Maharashtra government also announced that the Udyog Bhavan in Mumbai will be renamed as “Ratan Tata Udyog Bhavan.”
iv.The Department of Industry, Maharashtra announced the renaming of the Udyog Ratna Award as the “Ratan Tata Udyog Ratna Award“. Ratan Tata was the first recipient of this award in 2023.
