The United Nation’s(UN) International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) is annually observed across the globe on October 1, to recognize the important role older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) play in society.

  • 1st October,2024 marks the observance of 34th Anniversary of IDOP.

Theme:

The Theme of IDOP 2024 is- “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”

  • This theme highlights the urgent need to improve care systems as the global population age. The focus is on the growing global demographic shift towards older populations.

Significance:

i.The UN emphasizes the need for strong policies that respect older persons’ rights and ensure they have control over their care.

ii.It highlights the importance of addressing the global shortage of caregivers by expanding education and training programs, particularly in geriatrics.

iii.The event also acknowledges the contributions of family caregivers, especially women, and calls for support measures to help them balance their responsibilities.

Background :

i.The background of IDOP can be traced back to 1982 World Assembly of Ageing (WAA) which adopted The Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing in 1982.

ii.In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through Resolution A/RES/45/106 declared October 1, as the International Day of Older Persons.

  • The first IDOP was observed on 1st October 1991.

Key Points

i.Life expectancy has increased significantly, particularly in developing countries. By 2030, older persons will outnumber youth globally, requiring urgent adjustments in support systems

ii.There is a global shortage of about 13.6 million formal caregivers, leading to unmet needs in long-term care services.

iii.The number of people aged 65 and older has significantly increased, from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021. By 2050, this group is expected to make up about 17% of the global population​

  • These milestones reflect the UN’s commitment to supporting older persons and ensuring their inclusion in society.

2024 Events:

i.The 2024 Commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons held at the UN Headquarters, New York City, the United States of America(USA).

ii.The event also host the launch of the United Nations Postal Administration(UNPA) Commemorative Stamp in celebration of the UNIDOP.

In India:

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoS&E), as the nodal ministry for the cause of senior citizens, has been celebrating day since 2005 by conferring Vayoshreshtha Sammans to eminent Senior Citizens and Institutions in recognition for their services towards the elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens.
