Union Minister Amit Shah Launched SOPs on “White Revolution 2.0” to Boost Indian Dairy SectorOn 19th September 2024, Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Cooperation (MoC) launched the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on ‘White Revolution 2.0’ during the National Conference on the initiatives taken by the MoC in the 1st 100 days of the 3rd term of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government held in New Delhi, Delhi.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Completes 6 Years of Successful ImplementationAyushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri- Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), one of the key components of Ayushman Bharat (AB), a flagship scheme of Government of India (GoI), which emerged from the National Health Policy 2017, has completed 6 years of successful implementation.
- It was launched on 23rd September, 2018 by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
i.AB PM-JAY is the largest health assurance scheme in the world which offers a cashless health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization across public and private empanelled hospitals in India.
ii.The scheme is fully-funded by the GoI and cost of implementation is shared between the Central and State Governments.

DoA&FW Released the 3rd Advance Estimates FY24 of Area and Production of Various Horticultural CropsOn 21st September 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DoA&FW) under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW) has released the 3rd Advance Estimates of the Area and Production of various Horticultural Crops for Financial Year 2023-24 (FY24).
- It is compiled on the basis of data received from States/ Union Territories (UTs) and other Governmental source agencies.
- As per 3rd advance estimates for FY24, total horticulture production in India for FY24 is estimated to be about 353.19 Million Tonnes (MT), a marginal decrease of 0.65% (about 22.94 Lakh Tonnes) compared to FY23 final estimates of about 355.48 MT.
Key Findings of FY24 (3rd Advance Estimates):
i.The area under horticultural crops has expanded to 28.98 million hectares in FY24, up from 28.63 million hectares in the Second Advance Estimates and 28.44 million hectares in 2022-23.
ii.According to DoA&FW, some of the key fields of horticulture like: fruits, honey, flowers, plantation crops, spices and aromatics & medicinal plants, are expected to see increase in their production over Final Estimates of FY24.
iii.India’s fruit production is expected to increase by 2.29% in FY24 i.e. to 112.73 MT. This increase in production is mainly attributed by higher yields in crops like: mango, banana, grapes, and custard apple, among others.
- However, the production of some of the fruits like: apple, sweet orange, mandarin, guava, litchi, pineapple and pomegranate, are expected to decrease as compared to FY23.
iv.As per DoA&FW data , overall production of vegetables is estimated to be around 205.80 MT. It has highlighted that significant increases are expected in crops such as: tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, tapioca, bottle gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, among others.
- While, some crops like: potato, onion, brinjal, elephant foot yam, capsicum, and other vegetables are most likely to witness decrease in their production.
- The overall production of onion is projected to be at 242.44 Lakh Tonne in FY24 (3rd Advance Estimates).
v.It has projected that potato production in India is likely to be around 570.49 Lakh Tonne in FY24 (3rd Advance Estimates). This projection is mainly due to decrease in production reported in Bihar and West Bengal (WB).
vi.Production of Tomato is estimated to increase by 4.38%, from around 204.25 Lakh Tonne registered in FY23 to 213.20 Lakh Tonne in FY24 (3rd Advance Estimates).

Indian Army Collaborated with FICCI and Unveiled HIM DRONE-A-THON 2024 & HIMTECH 2024 Events in LadakhThe Indian Army hosted two major events, ‘HIM DRONE-A-THON 2024’, and ‘HIMTECH 2024’, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), at Leh, in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. The events focused on harnessing military technology for High Altitude Areas (HAA) through cutting-edge drone and technology innovations.
- The HIM DRONE-A-THON 2024 was held from 17th to 18th September 2024 at Wari La, Leh.
- The HIMTECH 2024 was held from 20th to 21st September 2024 at Rinchen Auditorium Grounds, Leh.
Note: The program is conceptualised by the Headquarters Northern Command to reshape the annual North Tech Symposium with a new mandate for the year 2024.
Aim:
The 2 events are aimed at utilising cutting-edge technologies that have been specifically designed to enhance the Indian army’s capabilities in some of the world’s most challenging terrains.
HIM DRONE-A-THON 2024:
i.HIM DRONE-A-THON 2024 focused on the demonstration of the capabilities of Aerial/ Ground/ Water/Underwater drones in HAA
ii.It brought together over 20 domestic drone manufacturers to demonstrate their capabilities in real high-altitude battlefield conditions, at elevations ranging between 4,000–5,000 meters.
- The Wari La Pass is located at an altitude of over 15,000 feet where operating drones is comparatively difficult.
iii.The event covers various drone applications, including the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Drones, Loiter Munitions (also known as Kamikaze Drones), Water Surface and Under Water drones, etc.
Objectives:
i.To analyse and compare the performance of various systems fielded based on demonstrated capabilities.
ii.To recommend equipment for procurement that meets operational requirements
iii.To recommend product improvement and modifications to the participating organisations for better operational suitability in Northern Command.
iv.To access industry technological thresholds and capabilities, and recommend broad Qualitative Requirements (QRs) to guide future indigenisation, Research and Development (R&D) projects, and procurement cases.
HIMTECH 2024:
i.HIMTECH 2024 focussed on showcasing cutting-edge equipment /products /solutions designed to perform in HAA.
ii.This event provided a platform for Indian industries to showcase a wide range of equipment and technologies comprising:
- Autonomous Unmanned Systems (AUS) (Air, Land, Underwater), Green Energy, Human Sustainability, Equipment Sustenance, Infrastructure, Waste Disposal, etc.
Objectives of the Event:
i.Assessing the capabilities of products and solutions to enhance the operational strength of the Indian Armed Forces and Border Guarding Forces (BGFs) in HAA.
ii.Providing industry players with opportunities to explore Business-to-Government (B2G) engagements with the Northern and Eastern Commands of the Indian Army and BGFs.
iii.Offering shortlisted products a chance to participate in No Cost, No Commitment (NCNC) trials at designated locations, subject to product evaluation and approval.

Madhya Pradesh SEC Conducted India’s 1st Paperless Election
Madhya Pradesh (MP) State Election Commission (SEC) conducted a paperless voting process for the first time in India. It was implemented as a pilot project during a Panchayat by-election in Ratua Ratanpur village, Berasia tehsil in Bhopal(MP) for the post of Sarpanch and recorded 84% turnout.
- The process aims to computerise the manual parts of the voting process that were previously done on paper.
- The new system uses thumb impressions and electronic signatures for voter identification, ensuring authenticity and eliminating proxy voting.
- Benefits include real-time data generation, increased accuracy, fewer human resources required, improved transparency, and smoother election processes.
Note: Voting percentage and ballot accounting were also done online and the voting percentage was received online every 2 hours on all platforms. After polling, ballot paper accounts are sent to candidates and polling agents via electronic mail(email).
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Jordan Becomes 1st Country Globally to Receive WHO Verification for Eliminating LeprosyThe World Health Organization (WHO) officially verified Jordan as the 1st country in the world to have eliminated leprosy (also known as Hansen’s disease), a chronic infectious disease caused by a bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae.
- Jordan has not reported any locally transmitted (autochthonous) cases of leprosy for over 2 decades. This achievement is seen as a significant step in public health efforts to eliminate leprosy worldwide.
Note: The official WHO verification was received by Feras Ibrahim Hawari, Minister of Health, Jordan from Dr. Jamela Al-Raiby, WHO Representative to Jordan on behalf of the WHO.
Key Points:
i.This achievement is expected to inspire other countries to enhance their efforts against leprosy.
ii.Despite the elimination, Jordan will need to maintain robust surveillance systems to detect and manage any potential future cases, including those from foreign sources.
iii.The success is seen as a result of collaboration between Jordan’s Ministry of Health and the WHO (provided technical support) at various levels.
Collaboration and Strategy:
i.The elimination of leprosy globally is not just about tackling the disease itself, but also about addressing the associated stigma and the psychological and socio-economic impacts.
ii.Jordan’s success is attributed to strong political commitment, collaboration, and effective public health strategies.
iii.An independent team commissioned by the WHO conducted an extensive review before recommending that Jordan be acknowledged for eliminating leprosy.
About Leprosy:
i.Leprosy is an age-old disease that mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, and the eyes.
- It potentially causes disabilities if untreated that include permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, and eyes.
ii.Leprosy is a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) that still occurs in over 120 countries. More than 200,000 new cases are reported every year.
iii.Leprosy is a curable disease and the currently recommended treatment regimen consists of 3 drugs: dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine.
- The combination is referred to as Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT).
iv.The disease spreads via nasal and oral droplets after close, prolonged contact with untreated individuals. It is not transmitted through casual interactions.
v.Diagnosis is based on clinical signs like skin lesions, nerve thickening, and microscopic detection of bacilli.
- Based on that, the cases are classified as Paucibacillary (PB), or Multibacillary (MB) for treatment purposes.

Highlights:
i.During the session, the Naples Statement was signed on ‘Culture for the sustainable development of Africa and the world’ to promote culture as a driver of sustainable development in Africa.
- It aims to enhance cultural and creative sectors, protect cultural property from illicit trafficking, and promote Africa’s inclusion in UNESCO Heritage Lists.
ii.The importance of culture as a transformative driver for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda was emphasized.
iii.Bilateral meetings were held between MoC Secretary Arunish Chawla and various key officials, including the Minister of Culture, Italy, the Director General of ICCROM and the USA delegation. Indian Ambassador to Italy, Vani Rao also attended the bilateral meeting.

Tata electronics, TCS to develop India’s first domestic chips by 2026
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is collaborating with Tata Electronics Private limited (TEPL) to launch India’s first domestically produced semiconductor chips by 2026.
- Tata Electronics is leading the initiative, with TCS providing expertise in chip design, engineering, and intellectual property (IP)-based solutions.
i.The semiconductor chips will cater to industries such as automotive, electronics, power, consumer goods, and healthcare.
ii.This initiative aligns with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has approved the establishment of three semiconductor manufacturing facilities in India.

Tata Electronics is working on two major projects:
i.An USD 11-billion greenfield chip manufacturing plant in Dholera, Gujarat, in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), with a production capacity of 50,000 wafers per month.
ii.A USD 3.26-billion facility in Assam focused on chip assembly and testing, expected to have its first chips ready by late 2025 or early 2026.

AAP Senior Leader Atishi Sworn-in as 8th CM of DelhiAtishi Marlena Singh, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took oath as the 8th Chief Minister (CM) of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. She was appointed by the President Droupadi Murmu under the Article 239. Lieutenant-Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath of office and secrecy to Atishi at a ceremony held at Raj Niwas in New Delhi(Delhi). 5 AAP ministers also took oath during the ceremony.
- She replaced Arvind Kejriwal, the 7th CM of Delhi since February 2015, who resigned from his role in September 2024.
- Atishi is expected to serve a 4-month term with Delhi’s Assembly Elections scheduled for February 2025.
The new Council of Ministers announced by the AAP comprises: Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Imran Hussain, and the first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukesh Ahlawat.

i.Atishi is the 3rd woman CM of Delhi after Sheila Dikshit (1998 to 2013) of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Sushma Swaraj (1998) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
- She became the youngest of all 3 to hold the CM Office (CMO) in the Union Territory (UT) of Delhi at 43.
ii.With this, Atishi has also become the 17th woman CM in India, joining the likes of Sushma Swaraj, Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal,WB), Jayaram Jayalalithaa (Tamil Nadu,TN), and others.
iii.She is only the 2nd woman CM in India at present, alongside WB’s Mamata Banerjee.

Marxist Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Sworn-in as 9th President of Sri LankaOn 23rd September 2024, Anura Kumara Dissanayake (55 year old), Leader of Marxist-Leninist party – Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), sworn-in as 9th President of Sri Lanka after winning the 2024 Presidential election.
- He was sworn in by Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Jayantha Jayasuriya at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
2024 Presidential Election of Sri Lanka:
i.This marks the 1st election of Sri Lanka since the 2022 economic collapse following which then President Gotabaya Rajapaksha was forced to flee the country.
ii.Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the election by defeating his rival Sajith Premadasa of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).
iii.Dissanayake won the presidency with 42.31% of the vote. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa took 2nd place with 32.76%.
About Anura Kumara Dissanayake:
i.Dissanayake joined JVP as a student leader during the 2nd insurrection (1980s) which resulted in mass killings and violence in Sri Lanka.
ii.He won his 1st parliamentary election in 2000. He has served as Minister of Agriculture during the President Chandrika Kumaratunga Bandaranaike’s government between 2004 and 2005.
iii.In 2014, he became the leader of JVP, replacing Somawansa Amarasinghe.
iv.He contested his 1st Presidential election in 2019. He lost the election against Gotabaya Rajapaksha and finished at 3rd position by securing just 3% of valid votes.

Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh appointed as next Indian Air Force ChiefThe Ministry of Defence (MoD) has appointed Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh as the next Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) in the Indian Air force (IAF), in the rank of Air Chief Marshal, with effect from September 30, 2024.
- He will succeed the incumbent Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, who retires upon superannuation.
- Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS), Air Marshal Singh will be the fourth officer from the Sikh community to lead the IAF, after Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, Air Chief Marshal Dilbagh Singh and Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa have been from Sikh Community.

i.Commissioned into the Fighter Stream of the IAF on December 21, 1984, he is a qualified flying instructor and Experimental Test Pilot (ETP) with over 5,000 hours of flying experience.

Aditya Birla Capital gets RBI nod for merger with Aditya Birla Finance
On 18th September 2024, Aditya Birla Capital Limited has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the amalgamation of Aditya Birla Finance Limited, its wholly owned subsidiary, with itself to create a large unified Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC).
- Aditya Birla Capital will now approach National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to complete the amalgamation process.
- Aditya Birla Capital’s board approved the merger with Aditya Birla Finance on 11th March 2024.

Background:
i.In 2005, the United Nations (UN) launched the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Life’ (2005-2015), to raise awareness about the need to better care for our water resources.
ii.Following this, World Rivers Day was established in response to a proposal initiated by Mark Angelo, an internationally renowned Canadian river advocate.
iii.The first WRD was observed in 2005 across multiple countries.

World Rhino Day 2024 – September 22 World Rhino Day is annually observed across the globe on 22 September to raise awareness about the Rhinoceros or Rhino(Rhinocerotidae), one of the oldest groups of mammals, and the urgent need for their conservation.
- The day is observed to spread awareness for all 5 species of rhinos namely, the Black rhino, and White rhinos in Africa, and the greater one-horned, Sumatran, and Javan rhinos in Asia.
Background:
i.World Rhino Day was first initiated by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) – South Africa in 2010.
ii.In 2011, the event expanded globally, celebrating both African and Asian rhino species on 22 September annually.
iii.The observance was initiated by the efforts of two dedicated women conservationists namely, Lisa Jane Campbell from the Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe, and Rhishja Cota-Larson from Saving Rhinos in the United States of America (USA).
