Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu Inaugurated Digi Yatra Facility for 9 Airports On 6th September 2024, Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) inaugurated the Digi Yatra facility for 9 airports at Visakhapatnam International Airport, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
i.He has also virtually extended it to 8 other airports of Airport Authority of India (AAI) namely, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu (TN)), Dabolim (Goa), Indore (Madhya Pradesh (MP)), Bagdogra (West Bengal (WB)), Ranchi (Jharkhand), Patna (Bihar), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), and Bhubaneshawar (Odisha) airports.
ii.While addressing the event, Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu announced the expansion of Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), which was introduced in 2016, aimed to provide regional connectivity to airports.

MoHFW Approves ‘BPaLM’, New Treatment Regimen For Multidrug-Resistant TB
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has approved the introduction of ‘BPaLM’ a new treatment for Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) under the National TB Elimination Program (NTEP) in India.
i.The BPaLM regimen consists of four drugs namely Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid and Moxifloxacin, which are more safe, effective and quicker treatment option than the previous Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment procedure.
- The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization(CDSCO) had earlier granted a licence and approved the usage of Pretomanid in India.
ii.Traditional MDR-TB treatments can last up to 20 months with severe side effects while BPaLM regimen can cure the drug-resistant TB in 6 months.
iii.The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), previously known as Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), aims to eliminate TB in India by 2025, five years ahead of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).

Union Bank of India Becomes 1st Major Bank to Join the PCAFOn September 9, 2024, Union Bank of India(UBI) became the first major Indian bank to join the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF), which aims to help financial institutions measure and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their investments and loans.
- This move aligns with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s new draft disclosure framework on climate-related financial risks, which requires banks to report by April 2025 and meet specific climate targets by April 2027.
- Union Bank aims to disclose its portfolio’s GHG emissions by FY2027-28 using PCAF’s methodology.
Key Points:
i.Financed emissions (Scope 3) from lending and investments outweigh operational emissions and are crucial for banks to track.
ii.RBI’s framework mandates disclosures in governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics/targets.
iii.PCAF helps financial institutions harmonize GHG reporting globally.
iv.PCAF supports India’s Nationally Determined Contributions and the Paris Agreement.
v.Through this, Union Bank will set standards in sectors like agriculture and microfinance, where emission standards are still developing.

ACC Approves Appointment of IAS Officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey Named as Finance Secretary
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Odisha cadre as the Finance Secretary, Ministry of Finance (MoF).
- He replaced T V Somanathan, who was appointed as the new cabinet secretary on August 30 2024.
- He is currently serving in MoF as Secretary of the two departments, the Departments of Public Enterprises (DPE), and Departments of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
- Prior to his central government roles, Pandey held important positions in the state government Odisha , where he served as Principal Secretary of the Finance Department.
Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Assumed Charge as Controller of Personnel Services in IN
Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, a serving Flag officer, assumed charge as the Controller of Personnel Services (CPS) in the Indian Navy (IN). Before this, he served as the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy (INA). He was commissioned into the IN on 1st July 1989.
- Vineet McCarty served as Training Commander at the Naval Academy, and Command Plans Officer at the Headquarters of Eastern Naval Command (ENC) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
- He also served as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Sri Lanka, and was India’s Defence Adviser to Singapore with concurrent accreditation to the Philippines.

India Successfully Test Fires Agni-4 Ballistic Missile in Odisha’s ChandipurIndia successfully launched an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) called Agni-4 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. The launch was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and has validated all operational and technical parameters.
- Agni-4 is the 4th missile in the Agni series. It was designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- The Agni-4 is a long-range, surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 4,000 kilometers (km), capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
- It is equipped with an indigenous-built ring laser gyroscope with a Micro Inertial Navigation System (MINGS), achieving 100 meters (m) accuracy.

CSL Launched INS Malpe & INS Mulki, the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water-Crafts, for Indian Navy On 10th September 2024, Kerala based Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) launched 2 indigenously designed and constructed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water-Crafts (ASW-SWCs) named the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Malpe and INS Mulki built for the Indian Navy (IN).
- These are the 4th and 5th ships of the 8 ASW-SWC project being built by the CSL for IN.
Note: CSL, incorporated in 1972, is a Schedule B and Category – I Miniratna Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW).
Key People: The ships were launched by Vijaya Srinivas, wife of Vice Admiral Vennam Srinivas, the 30th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOCINC), Southern Naval Command (SNC).
Background:
i.The contract for building the 8 ASW SWC ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the CSL on 30th April 2019.
ii.The Mahe Class of Ships will replace the in-service Abhay class ASW Corvettes of the IN.
Features:
i.The vessels are 78.0 meters (m) long, and 11.36 m wide with a draught of about 2.7 m.
ii.The displacement is about 900 tonnes and would be able to achieve a maximum speed of 25 knots and endurance of 1,800 nautical miles (nmi).
iii.The ships are designed to fit indigenously developed, state-of-the-art Sound Navigation and Ranging (SONARs) for underwater surveillance.
iv.The ASW SWC ships have over 80% indigenous content.
v.These ships are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and mine-laying operations, including subsurface surveillance.
vi.Each of the vessels has a total installed propulsion power of about 12 Megawatts (Mw).
vii.They are equipped with lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets, and mines, a Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) (30 millimeters (mm) gun), and 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote Control Guns (SRCGs).
China’s Geespace Launched 10 LEO Satellites, Equivalent to SpaceX’s StarlinkOn 6th September 2024, Geespace, a satellite technology company backed by Chinese automaker Geely Technology Group, launched the 3rd batch of satellites as part of its plan to form a mega-constellation.
- This included 10 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre (TSLC) located in the northern province of Shanxi, China.
- This deployment holds great significance as it marks the 1st time a Chinese commercial aerospace company has offered LEO satellite communication on an international level.
Note: This constellation is the China’s equivalent to Starlink, the satellite network developed SpaceX of the United States of America (USA).
Key Points:
i.With the launch of 3rd batch, the constellation now comprises 30 satellites covering 90% of the globe with 24-hour (hr) communication services.
ii.LEO satellites usually operate at the height of 300-2000 kilometer (km) above the Earth’s surface, offer more efficient transmission and are cheaper to launch compared to higher-orbit satellites.
iii.Geespace deployed its 1st 20 satellites into orbit in two separate launches, in 2022 and 2024.
Key Targets:
i.Geespace aims to build a network of 6,000 satellites, to provide global broadband services similar to SpaceX’s Starlink.
ii.The launch of 10 LEO satellites is part of company’s 1st construction phase for its constellation, which aims to put 72 satellites in orbit to service over 200 million users worldwide by the end of 2025.
iii.In 2nd phase, additional 264 satellites will be deployed for mobile phone communications, while the 3rd phase will launch 5,676 satellites for high-speed broadband.

Sahitya Akademi Award Winning English Prof K. Chellappan Passed Away Sahitya Akademi Awardee and renowned English teacher, translator K. Chellappan passed away at the age of 88 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN). He was born in 1936.
- In 2020, he was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award for his translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s Novel ‘Gora’ from Bengali to Tamil.
About K. Chellappan:
i.K. Chellappan was the former Professor and Head, Department of English, Bharathidasan University (BDU), Trichy, TN.
ii.He has published numerous papers in journals such as New Comparison and New Helikan.
iii.His noted works include the World as a Stage: Shakespearean Transformations; R.K. Narayan: The Ironic Mythmaker; Literature within/across the walls: Comparative studies in classical and modern Tamil Literature; and Tagore, Bharathi, and T.S. Eliot: Towards Creative Unity (Tagore lectures).
iv.He has also translated many Tamil books, including Kuraloviyam, Thenpandi Singam and Meesai Mulaithal Vayathil written by former TN Chief Minister(CM) M Karunanidhi, into English.
v.He has also served as the editor of the Tamil Section of Sakitya Akademy’s journal Dhakshina.

i.Chellappan has won several literary awards such as Poet Bharathidasan Award, Tamil Chemmal Award and the Best Teacher Award.

International Literacy Day 2024 – September 8The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO’s) International Literacy Day (ILD) is annually observed across the globe on 8 September to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies.
- The 2024 theme of ILD is, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace“.
During the ILD 2024 events, the 2024 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes (ILP) were awarded to 6 exceptional literacy programs from Austria, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Panama.
ILD 2024 in India:
i.On 7 September 2024, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI) chaired an international conference titled “Spectrum of Literacy” as a prelude to ILD 2024.
ii.On 8 September 2024, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar presided as Chief Guest at the ILD 2024 celebrations at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.
Background:
i.The concept of celebrating ILD was first proposed during the inaugural “World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy,” held in Tehran, Iran from 8–19 September 1965.
ii.In 1966, UNESCO adopted a resolution at its 14th session, proclaiming the 8 September of every year as International Literacy Day.
iii.The first-ever International Literacy Day was observed on 8 September 1967.

International Vulture Awareness Day 2024 – September 7 The International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) is annually observed across the globe on the 1st Saturday of September, to raise awareness about Vulture conservation and the important role these birds play in ecosystems.
i.IVAD 2024 falls on 7 September 2024.
- IVAD 2023 was observed on 2 September 2023;

World Physiotherapy Day 2024 – September 8World Physiotherapy Day (WPTD) also known as World Physical Therapy Day is annually observed across the globe on September 8 to raise awareness about the importance of physical therapy in helping people of all ages recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and maintain optimal physical function.
- The day honours the work of physiotherapists and promotes the importance of physiotherapy in healthcare.
- The observance is led by World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) – ‘operating as World Physiotherapy’ . It is an international organisation representing physiotherapists worldwide.
Theme:
The theme of World Physical Therapy Day 2024 is “Low Back Pain and the Role of Physiotherapy in its Management and Prevention”.
Background:
i.In 1996, the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (now World Physiotherapy) designated 8th September of every year as World Physiotherapy Day.
ii.The day 8th September marks the foundation day of WCPT, which was founded on 8th September 1951 by 11 physiotherapy associations. The first general meeting of WCPT was held in Copenhagen, Denmark
What is Physiotherapy?
i.Physiotherapy is a treatment that helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability.
ii.It provides pain relief, disease prevention, and rehabilitation through movement and exercise.
iii.It also assists to lower the risk of injury or disease in future.
2024 Campaign:
The 2024 campaign is focused on key messages like,
i.LBP is the primary cause of disability across the globe. In 2020, 619 million people experienced LBP, accounting for 1 in every 13 persons.
ii.It can occur at any age, and everyone will have it at some point in their lives, it only becomes chronic (lasting more than 3 months) for a minority.
90% of LBP is non-specific, this means there is no one specific structure that can be found to cause it.

Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi Launches CM-KISAN YojanaOn September 8, 2024, Odisha’s Chief Minister (CM) Mohan Charan Majhi launched the ‘CM-KISAN Yojana’ at Gangadhar Meher University in Sambalpur, Odisha during the state’s Nuakhai festival. For the fiscal year 2024-25(FY25), the Odisha government has allocated Rs 1,935 crore for the CM-KISAN Yojana.
- The scheme has replaced the ‘Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA)’ scheme and focuses on supporting small, marginal, and landless farmers.
About ‘CM-KISAN Yojana’ :
i.The scheme provides financial aid to farmers not covered by the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Yojana.
ii.Under this scheme, 46 lakh small and marginal farmers will receive financial assistance of Rs 925 crore.
iii.Small and marginal farmers will get Rs 4,000 annually in two installments(on Nuakhai and Akshaya Tritiya), with payments directly transferred to their bank accounts.
- Landless agricultural households will receive Rs 12,500 annually in three installments.
iv.To receive the benefits under this scheme, farmers must register through the CM Kisan web portal.
Other Launches/Announcements:
i.Additionally, the CM announced that the construction of Odisha’s second All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Sambalpur.
ii.He also unveiled the Krushak Odisha Unified Portal of the Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment Department.
- The portal will provide a single-window platform to address agriculture-related queries, services and grievances.

Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu Launches HRTC’s National Common Mobility Card for Cashless Travel Across India
Sukhvinder Sukhu, Chief Minister (CM) of Himachal Pradesh (HP), launched the Himachal Road Transport Corporation’s (HRTC) National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), for cashless travel across India, enabling users to access public transportation nationwide without cash, in Shimla, HP.
- This card, a first in India, allows cashless travel in public transportation systems across India, making HRTC the first State Transport Undertaking (STU) to introduce such an initiative.
- The HRTC NCMC card, developed in collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI), is a contactless, dual-interface, Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV)-chip-based prepaid card.
- This card offers multiple payment options to passengers and can be used in transit networks like the Delhi Metro, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), etc.
- The card comes with a one-time issuance fee of Rs. 100. Passengers can easily recharge the card online or at designated counters, with an initial minimum recharge of Rs. 100 and a maximum balance limit of Rs. 2,000.
