On 16th August 2024, the Jury panel of the 70th National Film Awards announced the list of winners of the National Award for the year 2022 at the event held at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, Delhi. The list of winners was presented to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) in the presence of Vrunda Desai, Joint Secretary (Films), MIB.
Jury of 70th National Film Award:
The jury of the 70th National Film Awards featured several prominent figures.
i.The Feature Film Jury was chaired by director Rahul Rawail and the Non-Feature Film Jury was chaired by director-producer Nila Madhab Panda.
ii.Senior journalist and film historian Gangadhar Mudalair was the Chairperson for Best Writing on Cinema.
About the National Film Awards:
i.The National Film Awards is the most prominent film award in India that was established in 1954. The National Film Awards are organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) under MIB.
ii.It aims to encourage the production of films that are aesthetic & technical and are of social relevance.
iii.This also aims to increase appreciation of different cultures and communities across India.
iv.The Awards are divided into three sections: Feature Films, Non-Feature Films, and Best Writing on Cinema.
v.Categories: Six categories from the Feature Films section, two from the Non-Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema sections each have been made eligible for Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus Award), and the rest of the categories for Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus Award).
Highlights of 70th National Film Award:
i.The Malayalam film Aattam (The Play) directed by Anand Ekarshi was awarded the Best Feature Film award.
- Aattam is a thriller of accusation and betrayal set against the backdrop of a theatre troupe. It is also about the insensitivity with which a patriarchal society responds to cases of sexual assault and how the burden consistently falls on women to prove the authenticity of their experiences, whereas men often get clearance without needing any explanations.
ii.The Hindi/Urdu film Ayena (Mirror) directed by Siddhant Sarin has bagged the award for Best Non-Feature Film.
- Ayena’ explores moments of friendship, resilience and the daily negotiations of two young Indian women who survived an acid attack.
iii.The Kannada film Kantara won the Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
- The key theme of Kantara is the invasion of forest land, looting of forest wealth, and conflict between forest officials and villagers.
iv.Hindi film Brahmastra Part 1 – Shiva directed by Ayan Mukerji won a total of 3awards – Best Film in AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects Gaming & Comic), Best Male Playback Singer and Best Music Direction.
v.Tamil Film Ponniyin Selvan: I directed by Mani Ratnam won a total of 4 awards – Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, Best Music Direction and Best Feature Film in Tamil.
Awards of Best Actor and Actress:
i.Rishab Shetty won the award for Best Actor in Leading Role for his performance in the movie Kantara.
ii.Nithya Menon won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the film Thiruchitrambalam.
Award for Best Book on Cinema:
i.“Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography”, the biography of Kishore Kumar, Indian playback singer and musician authored by Anirudha Bhattacharjee & Parthiv Dhar has been awarded the Best Book on Cinema.
ii.The book was published by HarperCollins Publishers India Pvt. Ltd.
iii.As a part of the award the authors will receive the Swarna Kamal and Rs. 1 lakh (each).
Award for Best Film Critic:
Film Critic Deepak Dua has been honoured with the Best Critic Award at the 70th National Film Awards for the year 2022.
The award includes a Swarna Kamal medal and a Rs 1 lakh cash prize.
