Sri Lankan Women’s cricket team captained by Chamari Athapaththu won their first Women’s Twenty20 (T20) Asia Cup title by defeating the Indian women’s cricket team captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, by 8 wickets in the finals of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024 held at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. This marks the first title of Sri Lanka
- Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024, the 9th edition of the tournament, was held from 19th to 28th July 2024 in Dambulla, Sri Lanka.
Note: India is the only team that has played in the finals of all the Asia Cups and has been the most successful team, with 7 title wins.
About Women’s T20 Asia Cup:
i.The Women’s Asia Cup (Asian Women’s Cricket Championships), officially known as the ACC Women’s Asia Cup is a women’s Twenty20 International cricket tournament.
ii.It was established in 2004 and is a biennial tournament. The tournament is contested by cricket teams from Asia.
iii.The first Women’s Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka with the first four editions played in the One Day International (ODI) format.
Prize Money:
The tournament winners will get a prize of USD 20000 (Rs.16.48 lakhs) while the runners-up will get a prize of USD 12,500 (Rs.10.30 Lakhs).
Key Highlights
i.Fifties from Chamari Athapaththu (61) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (69 not out) helped Sri Lanka win the game against India.
ii.Samarawickrama was the Player of the Match in the Final, while Chamari Athapaththu was the Player of the Tournament for scoring 304 runs and three wickets in the event.
iii.They won the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier earlier in 2024 to qualify for the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.
iv.In 2023, Sri Lanka secured their first-ever series victory against England in England.
v.The Sri Lankan team has won 1 silver medal (2022) and 1 bronze medal (2014) in Asian Games. They have also won 1 silver medal (2019) in South Asian Games.
