Ministry of Steel Launches SIMS 2.0 Portal & 2nd Volume of Safety Guidelines for Iron & Steel Sector BookUnion Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Ministry of Steel launched the Steel Importing Monitoring System (SIMS) 2.0 portal, a dedicated portal for providing advanced information about steel imports. He also released the 2nd volume of the book, “Safety Guidelines for Iron and Steel Sector,” covering 16 processes used by the iron and steel sector.
- SIMS 2.0 was developed with contributions from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and MSTC Limited.
- The guidelines aims to enhance safety and productivity in the iron and steel industry and this will also assists the industry in becoming world-class in adopting safety standards and eliminating accidents.
- The launch of SIMS 2.0 is a key achievement, highlighting its inclusion in the Government of India’s(GoI) 100-day agenda.
Note: MSTC Limited (formerly known as Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited) is a Mini Ratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Steel.

Background:
i.SIMS was originally introduced in 2019 to provide detailed steel import data to the domestic industry.
ii.SIMS 2.0 builds on the original 2019 version, improving data quality, monitoring steel imports, and promoting the growth of the domestic steel industry.
Features of SIMS 2.0:
i.Key features include the integration of the Application Programming Interface (API) with multiple government portals.
ii.It enhances quality control and streamlines the process for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
iii.The portal boasts a robust data entry system for consistent and authentic data, promoting transparency and accountability.
Benefits:
i.SIMS 2.0 provides detailed data for policymaking and identifies production growth areas.
ii.It enables better risk management by integrating various databases.
iii.It also facilitates Customs in conducting improved analysis and risk management of steel imports.
Note: India remains the second-largest steel producer globally, but the finished steel imports remained significant at around 8 Million tonnes (Mt) in 2023-24.
MoC Releases Commemorative Stamp On 100th Birth Anniversary of Playback Singer MukeshOn July 24 2024, The Ministry of Culture (MoC) released the commemorative stamp in honour of the legendary Indian Playback Singer Mukesh Chand Mathur marking his Centenary (100th) birth anniversary (July 22 2024). The commemorative stamp symbolises Mukesh’s remarkable career and unforgettable voice.
- Gajedra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism was the Chief Guest at the event held at Akashwani Rang Bhawan, All India Radio (AIR), New Delhi, Delhi.
- India Post also issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp of Denomination Rs 30 on 100th Birth Anniversary of Legendary Singer Mukesh .
About Mukesh Chand Mathur:
i.Mukesh has been one of the most well-known playback singers of the Hindi film industry.
ii.Apart from singing, he also acted in many films which includes Aadab Arz (1943), Aah (1953), Mashuqa (1953), Anurag (1956).
iii.His last song recorded was Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komalfrom Satyam Shivam Sundaram in June 1976.

Hunger Affected Around 9% of World Population in 2023: UN’s SOFI 2024 Report According to the latest United Nation(UN) report titled “State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2024: Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms”, around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, which is equivalent to 1 in 11 people (approx. 9%) globally and 1 in 5 in Africa.
- The theme of SOFI 2024 is “Financing to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition’’. This year theme draw attention to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)2 Zero Hunger.
i.As per SOFI 2024, India is home to 194.6 million (19.5 crore) undernourished people, which is the highest in any country in the world.The report mentioned that about 13% of the population of India suffers from chronic undernourishment.
ii.As per the report, between 713 million and 757 million people have faced hunger in 2023, which is nearly 152 million more than in 2019 when considering the midrange of 733 million.
iii.This annual report was launched on the backdrop of the Group-20 (G-20) Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty Task force Ministerial held in Brazil, which cautioned that the world is falling significantly short of achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 i.e. Zero Hunger by 2030.

IAEA Partners with UNOSSC to Boost South-South Cooperation for Sustainable DevelopmentThe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced a new collaborative agreement with United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) aimed to enhance their joint efforts to give boost to sustainable development through South-South and triangular cooperation.
- The 1st set of joint IAEA and UNOSSC activities will mainly focus on how the IAEA uses South-South cooperation to help countries to combat the effects of climate change which mainly impact the developing countries.
Key Signatories: The agreement was signed by Hua Liu, Deputy Director-General (DG), IAEA and Dima Al- Khatib, Director of UNOSSC, during the recent UN High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development(HLPF) held in New York, the United States of America (USA).
Key Points:
i.The agreement outlines various joint activities such as: joint workshops, outreach events and the publication of new report. These activities will help the IAE to work more closely with an international community of South-South practitioners.
ii.As per the agreement, the IAEA will participate in new UNOSSC programmes such as: ‘Data to Policy Network’ and ‘Solutions Lab’ over the next year.
- Under the UNOSSC ‘Data to Policy Network’, the IAEA will host targeted workshops for national policy makers to consider the success stories of climate action that might be adapted to their respective countries’ requirements.
- The UNOSSC ‘Solutions Lab’ will help the IAEA to work in collaboration with other global organizations, to identify areas where nuclear science and technology can be supported by conventional techniques.
iii.A new joint publication will feature 20 IAEA climate action case studies such as climate-smart, agriculture , groundwater mapping, among others, with a South-South cooperation component.
- These case studies will demonstrate how countries from Global South are getting benefits from the South-South Cooperation.
- For example: Pakistan developed salt-tolerant crops with the support of IAEA, which was shared with other countries through fellowships and training courses.
- In the Sahel region, scientists from the University of Lomé (in Togo, African region) examine the groundwater samples from across 13 countries, which help to understand water availability.

RBI Revised Domestic Money Transfer Framework The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised the framework for Domestic Money Transfer (DMT) services by regulated entities. RBI has made Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements more stringent. The new changes in the framework will come into effect from 1st November 2024.
- This is in line with RBI’s efforts to counter and prevent the misuse of banking channels for online fraud.
Points to note:
i.RBI issued these revised guidelines through a circular under Section 18 read with Section 10(2) of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 (Act 51 of 2007).
ii.As per the new norms, the remitting banks will be required to maintain the records of the name and address of the beneficiaries for cash pay-out services.
iii.There has been a significant increase in availability of banking outlets and advancement in payment systems since the introduction of DMT framework in 2011.
- So, these changes reflect a need to adapt to these evolving dynamics.
Key Changes:
i.For cash-pay in services: Banks and Business Correspondents (BCs)will be required to register remitters using a verified cell phone number and a self-certified ‘Officially Valid Document (OVD)’ as per the Know Your Customer (KYC) directions issued in 2016.
- This will help to authenticate identity verification and will further help to reduce potential fraud.
ii.Validation by AFA: These new changes have made it mandatory that every transaction will now be required to be validated through an Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA).
- This additional security measure will ensure safe and secure online transactions.
iii.Compliance with Income Tax Act: As per the new norms, remitting banks and BCs are now required to comply with provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the related rules and regulations pertaining to cash deposits.
iv.Remitter details in IMPS/NEFT messages: The revised framework has also made it mandatory to incorporate remitter details in the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) or National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) transaction messages and to specify cash-based remittance transactions with an identifier.
v.Exclusion of card-to-card transfers: As per new norms, card-to-card transfers are excluded from the purview of the DMT framework and will continue to be governed by existing regulations specific to such instruments.
- All other instructions in the circular dated 5th October, 2011 such as the limits and size of transactions will continue to be applicable.

- Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India, conferred the insignia of the Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on Rehaab Allana during the ceremony held at Embassy of France in New Delhi, Delhi.
About Rahaab Allana:
i.Rahaab Allana is a curator and publisher of the Alkazi Foundation for the Arts in New Delhi. He is currently serving a member at the Arts and Culture Committee, Asia Society (India Chapter).
ii.He is the Founder of ASAP/art, South Asia’s first news and reviews app for contemporary art.
iii.He is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and was Honorary Research Associate (HRA) at University College London, United Kingdom (UK).
iv.His artistic collaboration with France began with the exhibition of the Alkazi Collection at the 2007 Arles Photo Festival.

Paris Olympics 2024: Nita Ambani Re-elected as IOC MemberNita Ambani, the founder of Reliance Foundation has been re-elected for a second term as the member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from India ahead of the Paris Olympics to be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
- She received 100% of the vote at the 142nd IOC session is held from 22 to 24 July in Paris, France.
Note: Nita Ambani became the first Indian woman to join the IOC in 2016.
Other Appointments:
During the 142nd IOC session, two new Vice-Presidents (VP) and two Executive Board (EB) members, as well as eight new IOC Members: 4 women and 4 men were elected. The term for the EB members is four years.
- Moroccan Nawal El Moutawakel and the Argentinian Gerardo Werthein are elected as the VP of IOC.
- Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski(Philippines)was also re-elected for a second term to the IOC Executive Board, and Li Lingwei (China) was elected as an EB member.
- John Coates (Australia) and Uğur Erdener (Türkiye) are elected as the Honorary Members of IOC.
About Nita Ambani:
i.Nita Ambaniwas first appointed to join the committee in 2016, at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
ii.She has made significant contributions to the international organisation, boosting India’s Olympic ambitions like hosting the first IOC session in Mumbai (Maharashtra) in 40 years in October 2023.

The Competent Authority has approved Shekhar Kulbhushan Kapur, Indian Filmmaker to be appointed as the Festival Director of the 55th and 56th editions of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa. The 55th edition of IFFI is set to be held from 20th to 28th November 2024.
i.He is one of the earliest directors to establish a name for himself in Hollywood with his film ‘Elizabeth’ and its sequel ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
ii.He has served as the Head of the Chairperson of the International Competition Jury at the 54th IFFI.
iii.He also chaired the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune (Maharashtra) from 2020 to 2023.
Note: The International Film Festival of India is one of the film festivals in Asia which was founded in 1952.

Hindustan Zinc launches ‘EcoZen’, Asia’s 1st Low-Carbon Green Zinc
Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer has launched ‘EcoZen’, Asia’s first low-carbon green zinc brand. It has been certified by a global sustainability consulting firm through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
i.EcoZen has a low-carbon zinc and has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of carbon equivalent per tonne of zinc produced.
ii.It is manufactured using renewable energy, making its carbon footprint of about 75 percent lower than the global average.
iii.This will result in a total carbon emission reduction of about 400 kilograms (kg) across their value chain by galvanising one tonne of steel with EcoZen.
iv.This initiative aligns with HZL’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Note: Udaipur, Rajasthan based HZL is recognized as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company as per S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).

IOC Elects French Alps to Host 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games & Salt Lake City–Utah to Host 2034 Edition
During the 142nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session held in Paris, France, IOC members elected French Alps (known as Alpes françaises) in France as the host of the XXVI Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2030, and Salt Lake City (SLC)-Utah of the United States of America (USA) as the host of the XXVII Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2034.
French Alps 2030:
i.The delegation of the French Alps 2030 was led by Emmanuel Macron, President of France, and the games will be held in the 2 regions namely Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
ii.The French Alps 2030 will be the 1st edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to fully integrate the principles of the Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5, focusing on sustainability.
SLC-Utah 2034:
i.The SLC-Utah 2034 delegation was led by Spencer Cox, Governor of Utah; Erin Mendenhall, Mayor, SLC; Gene Sykes, the President of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC); and Fraser Bullock, President of SLC-Utah Committee for the Games (UCG).
ii.The SLC-Utah 2034 aims to extend the benefits of the SLC 2002 Games to a new generation, aligning with the Olympic Agenda 2020, 2020+5, and regional development plans.
Note: The vote for the French Alps is contingent upon receiving a Games Delivery Guarantee from the French Prime Minister (PM) Gabriel Attal by 1 October 2024, and its ratification by the French Parliament by 1 March 2025.

Sahitya Akademi Awardee & Renowned Marathi litterateur Francis D’Britto Passed AwaySahitya Akademi Awardee Father Francis D’Britto, a renowned Marathi litterateur, environmentalist and Catholic priest, passed away at the age of 81 in Palghar district of Maharashtra. He was born on 4th December 1942 in Jeladi village in Nandakhal, Maharashtra.
About Francis D’Britto:
i.Francis D’Britto founded the ‘Harit Vasai’ movement (movement which protects the environment and small farmers from powerful land developers).
ii.He served as the President of the 93rd All India Marathi Literary Conference, held in January 2020 at Osmanabad (Maharashtra).
iii.He was also former editor of a community journal called ‘Suvarta’.
Noted Works & Awards:
i.He won the Sahitya Akademi translation prize in 2013 for “Subodh Bible-Naya Karar”, the Marathi translation of the “Bible: The New Testment (English) Religious Text”.
- With this, He became the 2nd person to translate the holy bible to Marathi after Father Thomas Stephens (1549-1619), a britisher and 17th centrury missionary. Father Stephen authored ‘Krista Purana’, an epic poem on the life of Jesus Christ in a mix of Marathi and Konkani.
ii.He also received the Maharashtra Government’s literary award for best translation in 2013.
iii.He was awarded the Dnyanoba-Tukaram Puraskar for his literary work. The Catholic priest was the first to get the award that was constituted in 2007.

Himachal CM Releases ‘Ek Refugee Scientist’ Autobiography by Dr. MK Shingari
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister (CM) of Himachal Pradesh, released Dr MK Singari’s autobiography titled “Autobiography of Ek Refugee Scientist”. The book published by Notion Press marks his fifth book.
- Dr MK Singari’s famiy migrated from Pakistan to India during the 1947 partition of British India. The book features the life journey of Singari from a refugee to a pioneering Industrialist.

25th Kargil Vijay Diwas – July 26, 2024Kargil Vijay Diwas or Kargil Victory Day is annually observed across India on 26 July to mark the victory of the Indian Army over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. The Day also pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during the Kargil War.
- 26 July 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
During the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, virtually witnessed the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project in Ladakh, which will be the world’s highest tunnel when completed.
Note: During the Kargil War, the Indian Army carried out an offensive armed action named Operation VIJAY to evict Pakistani intruders from the Indian territory.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems or or World Mangrove Day is annually observed across the globe on 26 July to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems, a unique, prolific ecosystems located on the boundary between land and sea, where no other trees can survive.
- 26 July 2024 marks the observance of the 9th International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems.
Background:
i.In 2015, UNESCO at its 38th session of the General Conference, adopted a resolution 38 C/66 for the proclaiming the 26 July of every year as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
ii.The 1st ever International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was observed on 26 July 2016.

Telangana Dy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka presented Rs 2,91,159cr State Budget for FY25On July 25, 2024, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Deputy Chief Minister (Dy CM) and Finance Minister of Telangana, presented the Telangana State Budget of Rs 2,91,159 crore for the Financial Year 2024-25 (FY25).
i.This marks the first full budget presented by the Congress government, elected in December 2023, in the Telangana Legislative Assembly in Hyderabad, Telangana.
ii.The total revenue is estimated at Rs 2,90,814 crore, including open market loans of over Rs 57,000 crore.
iii.Telangana recorded a growth rate of 7.4% during FY24 against the national growth rate of 7.6%.
iv.The revenue expenditure is proposed at Rs.2,20,945 crores and the capital expenditure proposed is Rs.33,487 crores.
