MoC Minister releases ‘The Future is Now’ as Theme for 8th IMC
i.On July 19, 2024, the Union Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, Ministry of Communications (MoC) unveiled the theme of the 8th India Mobile Congress (IMC) i.e. ‘The Future is Now‘.
ii.The theme highlights India’s central role in technological evolution and IMC 2024, which is scheduled for October 15-18 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Delhi.
iii.At the event, DoT announced conferment of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Telecom Excellence Awards 2023 for exceptional contributions in Telecom Innovations, Telecom Skilling, Telecom Services, Telecom Manufacturing, and Telecom Applications.

Government of India Upgrades IRCTC to Schedule ‘A’ CPSE
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a “Mini-Ratna” Schedule B Central Public Enterprise (CPSEs) under the Ministry of Railways (MoR), has been upgraded as a ‘Schedule A’ CPSE.
Significance:
i.The significant updagradation coincides with the celebration of IRCTC’s 25th year of incorporation. IRCTC was incorporated in 1999.
ii.This highlights IRCTC’s robust performance and unwavering commitment to excellence and contributions to the hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors.
Growth Rate:
i.IRCTC achieved a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 50.63% in total income and 29.80% in profit after tax between FY 2021-22 and FY 2023-24.
ii.For FY24 (2023-2024), IRCTC’s earned a total income of Rs 4434.66 crores with Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 1111.26 crores and dividend of Rs 520 crores
Criteria for Categorisation of CPSEs:
At Present, all CPSE are required to be categorised into 4 schedules namely: Schedule ‘A’, Schedule ‘B’, Schedule ‘C’ and Schedule ‘D’. The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), the Ministry of Finance (MoF) has laid down criteria for initial and re-categorization of CPSEs:
i.The proposals for categorization of CPSEs would be initiated by the concerned Ministry or Department and submitted to DPE.
- Later, DPE would examine such proposals in consultations with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).
ii.Quantative Parameters: The proposal should include the performance of the concerned CPSE for last 5 years on quantitative parameters.
- These include: investment, capital employed, net sales, Profit before tax, number of employees and units, revenue per employee, sales/capital employed, capacity utilization and value added per employee.
iii.Qualitative Parameters: The proposals for categorization should also include details about the qualitative parameters related to the concerned CPSE.
- These include national importance, complexities of problems being faced by the company, level of technology, prospects for expansion and diversification of activities and competition from other sectors.
iv.The proposals for categorization should also include information regarding certain factors such as: share price, MOU ratings, Maharatna/ Navratna/Mini-Ratna status; and ISO Certification.
- Apart from the above factors, the critical or strategic importance of the concerned CPSE will also be considered for categorization.

AIM and WIPO Signed a JLoI towards Building Joint Innovation Programs in Global South
On 22nd July 2024, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog)-backed Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) has signed a Joint Letter of Intent (JLoI) with World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), one of the specialized agency of United Nations (UN).
- Aim: To develop programmes for innovation, entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property (IP) for countries in the Global South.
- Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India (GoI) presided over the signing of the JLoI between AIM and WIPO at NITI Aayog office in New Delhi, Delhi.
Key Dignitaries:
i.Representatives from WIPO: A high-level delegation from WIPO was led by Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director, WIPO Academy and Altaye Tedla, Head of WIPO Academy witnessed the signing of JLoI at NITI Aayog.
ii.Representatives from NITI Aayog: The dignitaries which represented NITI Aayog were: Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson, NITI Aayog, Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog and Dr. Chintan Vaishnav, Mission Director, AIM.
About Indo-WIPO Joint Program:
i.The programe aim to enhance the better understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) among various stakeholders such as: students, teachers, innovators and entrepreneurs of India.
ii.To enhance the understanding about the significance of IPR for development and economic growth, considering the educational and training requirements of students, teachers, innovators and entrepreneurs of India.
iii.To establish a network of trainers of innovation, creativity and Intellectual Property (IP) and to familiarize with the target beneficiaries and innovators through innovation and creativity.
India’s Progress in IP:
i.According to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023 report, released by WIPO, India had retained the 40th position among 132 economies featured in the report.
- Switzerland is the most innovative economy in 2023 followed by Sweden, the United States of America(USA).
ii.As per WIPO Report 2022, India has witnessed 6th straight year of growth in patent filing, registering the highest growth of 31.6% globally. This growth was mainly due to substantial increase in resident filings.

i.Currently, the WIPO delegation is on a 4-day visit to India, participated in an Intellectual Property workshop at Atal Incubation Centre- Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (AIC-GGSIPU), Dwarka, New Delhi (Delhi) on 23rd July, 2024.
- They interacted with students from Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and industry experts from various organisations such as: Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), among others.

The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), a Public Sector Enterprise (PSE) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and Netflix India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch “The Voicebox”, an upskilling program for voice-over artists in India.
- The MoU aligns with the vision of the NFDC and Netflix to promote Indian cinema, and nurturing talent in the Media and Entertainment industry.
Signatories: The MoU was signed by Prithul Kumar, Managing Director (MD) of NFDC, and Joint Secretary (Broadcasting II), MIB ; and Kiran Desai, General Counsel, and Senior Director – Business and Legal Affairs, Netflix India at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi (Delhi).

i.’The Voicebox’ offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) training for voice-over artists focusing on English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati.

Two SECL Blocks Listed in World’s Top 10 Largest Coal Mines: Gevra Secured 2nd and Kusmunda4th
Gevra Coal Mine and Kusmunda Coal Mine, blocks of Chhattisgarh-based South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) have secured the 2nd and 4th rank in terms of production volume in the list of the world’s top 10 largest coal mines released by WorldAtlas.com.
- Gevra and Kusmunda produced more than 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal annually accounting for about 10% total coal production of India.
- Black Thunder Mine in the United States of America(USA) has been ranked the world’s largest coal mine. With 4 mines, Indonesia dominates the top ten coal mines list.
- Globally, China is the largest producer of coal. In 2022, China accounted for almost 52% of the coal production worldwide. India, the second-largest coal producer, had a global share of over 9%.

ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 Team Won Prestigious IAF World Space Award 2024
Chandrayaan-3 mission team of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) won the prestigious World Space Award for 2024, presented by International Astronautical Federation (IAF) for its significant contributions to space exploration.
- The award is given in recognition of the Chandrayaan-3, India’s lunar mission historic achievement of soft landing near the lunar South Pole.
- The award recognises the mission’s historic achievement of making India the first country to land near the lunar South Pole.
About IAF World Space Award 2024:
i.The IAF World Space award is presented annually by IAF for an exceptional contribution/ contributions in space science, space technology, space medicine, space law or space management of exceptional impact to the world’s progress in astronautics.
ii.The award will be officially presented during the opening ceremony of the 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) which will held in Milan, Italy on 14th October, 2024.
- The theme for the 75th IAC will be. “Responsible Space for Sustainability”.
About Chandrayaan-3 Mission:
i.Chandrayaan-3 is the 3rd Lunar exploration of India, launched on 14th July, 2023 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
- Chandrayaan-1 was launched in 2008 and Chandrayaan-2 was aimed to land a lunar rover but faced a hard landing in 2019.
ii.The mission comprises a lunar lander named ‘Vikram’ and a lunar rover ‘Pragyan’, both were designed to explore the lunar surface and conduct scientific experiments to enhance better understanding of the composition and geology of moon.
iii.The mission achieved the successful soft landing on the unexplored south polar region of the Moon on 23rd August, 2023. Besides India, only the US, Russia and China have achieved the milestone of soft landing on the moon.
- This region is of particular interest for scientists as they believed the presence of water ice in permanently shadowed craters.
Note: In 2023, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi declared that 23rd August will be observed as “National Space Day” every year in India to commemorate the soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Krishnan Venkat Subramanian (KV Manian) as the Managing Director(MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Federal Bank Limited under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, 2013 for a period of 3 years with effect from September 23, 2024.
- Krishnan replaces Shyam Srinivasan, the current MD & CEO of Federal Bank whose term is set to end on September 22, 2024.
- Previously, Krishnan served as the Joint MD of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (KMBL) till April 30 2024.

Kristen Michal Appointed as Estonia’s New Prime Minister
On 23rd July 2024, President of Estonia Alar Karis swore in Kristen Michal, Chairman of the centrist Reform party, as the New Prime Minister (PM) of Estonia.
- He succeed Kaja Kallas, who resigned as of Estonia PM on 15th July 2024 to become the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union (EU).
- Prior to this, Kristen Michal was serving as the Minister of Climate since April 2023.
Background:
i.On 22nd July 2024, Riigikogu, the parliament of Estonia, authorised the Kristen Michal to form a new government with 64 Member of Parliament(MP) at the 101-seat parliament voting in favor, to 27 opposed.
ii.The new coalition agreement was triggered by the resignation of Kaja Kallas.
iii.The new coalition is made up of Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party (SDE) and Estonia 200, is a continuation of its predecessors, which had been in office since May 2023.

i.Kristen Michal is a first-time PM from the ruling Center-Right Reform Party.

European Space Agency Introduced Ramses, a Mission to study Asteroid Apophis
The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced it plans to launch ‘Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (Ramses)‘, a planetary defence mission, in 2028 to study the asteroid 99942 Apophis, a near Earth Object (NEO).
- Apophis is expected to pass within 20,000 miles of Earth’s surface on 13th April 2029.
- Ramses should be launched in April 2028 to allow for an arrival at Apophis in February 2029.
About RAMSES:
i.The Ramses mission aims to study Apophis to develop strategies for protecting Earth from potential asteroid collisions.
ii.Ramses spacecraft will perform comprehensive surveys of Apophis’s shape, surface, orbit, rotation, and orientation using a suite of scientific instruments.
iii.It will accompany the asteroid during the flyby to observe how it is warped and changed by the Earth’s gravity.
iv.The scientists will also learn about the asteroid composition, interior structure, cohesion, mass, density, and porosity.
About Apophis:
i.Apophis, named for the demon serpent in Egyptian mythology was discovered in 2004.
ii.It has an average diameter of 375 meters wide.
iii.The 2029 flyby is considered an extremely rare natural phenomenon since the astronomers believe that an object this large comes this close to Earth only once every 5000 to 10 000 years.
iv.This will be visible to the naked eye for about 2 billion people in parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Additional info:
i.National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has redirected its OSIRIS-REx(Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security – Regolith Explorer) spacecraft towards Apophis.
ii.The newly renamed OSIRIS-Apophis Explorer will arrive at Apophis roughly one month after the asteroid’s Earth flyby.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, an Australian racing driver won his first Formula 1 (F1) title by winning the Hungarian Grand Prix (GP) 2024 held at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary.
- McLaren’s Lando Norris, a British-Belgian racing driver, finished 2nd followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, a British racing driver, who finished 3rd.
Note: 2024 marks the 75th season of the F1 world championship.

i.Oscar Piastri, aged 23, is the first race winner born in the 21st century, the fifth Australian and the 115th driver to win a F1 GP title. Piastri became the 7th different winner in 13 races of the 2024 season.
ii.This Victory marks his 3rd podium in 6 races. Previously, he finished runner up in Monaco GP 2024 and Austria GP 2024.
iii.Following this victory, Oscar secured the 5th position in the Drivers’ championship standings with 149 points.
About Hungarian GP 2024:
i.F1 Hungarian GP 2024 was the 13th round of the 2024 Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) F1 World Championship.
ii.The Hungarian GP 2024 took place over 70 laps of the 4.381-kilometer (km) Hungaroring length, covering a race distance of 306.63 km.
Note: F1 Rolex Belgian GP 2024, the 14th round of the 2024 season, is scheduled to be held from 26 to 28 July 2024 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

National Broadcasting Day 2024 – July 23
National Broadcasting Day is annually observed across India on 23 July to commemorate the establishment of the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC), a Bombay (now Mumbai, Maharashtra)-based private radio station, becoming the 1st radio company in India, which came into existence on 23 July 1927.
- Aim: To celebrate the radio, which served as the only broadcasting medium before Television (TV) for News and Entertainment.
- 2024 marks the 97th anniversary of establishing the All India Radio (AIR), formerly IBC.
i.Radio broadcasting started in India under British rule in 1922 which consisted of programmes by the Bombay Presidency Radio Club. In June 1923, the Radio Club of Bombay made India’s first-ever broadcast.
ii.The National Broadcasting Policy (NBP), 2024, initiated by the MoIB, is set to transform India’s broadcasting sector.
- The objectives are to define a robust future for the broadcasting sector; promote India’s cultural diversity; and support the transition to a digital economy.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Launches ‘Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhayahastam’ Scheme 
On July 20 2024, Anumula Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister (CM) of Telangana launched ‘Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhayahastam’ scheme at the Praja Bhavan, Hyderabad in Telangana.
- Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 1 Lakhs will be provided to Telangana’s Civil Services aspirants, who has qualified for the Mains exams of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Note: It is the first time in the state’s history that the government has provided financial support for UPSC Mains preparation.
About the scheme:
i.This scheme aims at breaking down financial barriers for aspiring civil servants from Telangana.
ii.This will benefit around 400 aspirants from the Telangana region who qualify for the Mains every year.
iii.The financial support can be availed only once in their attempt to clear the civil services exam.
Financial assitance:
Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is providing the financial support as part of its Noble Initiative for Rewarding Mains Aspirants of the National Civil Services Examination (NIRMAN) initiative.
Eligibility:
i.The candidates must be permanent residents of Telangana.
ii.The candidates from the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC), Women, and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) categories are eligible for the scheme, however their family annual income must be less than Rs 8 lakh.

Assam CM Launches Amrit Brikshya Andolan 2.0 App For Massive Tree Plantation Drive
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister (CM) of Assam has launched the Amrit Brikshya Andolan (ABA) 2.0 App, a digital platform which allows the individuals to register or renew their participation in Assam’s tree planting campaign ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan’ .
- The second edition of Amrit Brikshya Andolan aims to plant 3 crore saplings across Assam from August 1 to 15 2024.
- Newly Registered Applicant will get an ABA Scheme Amount of Rs. 100 and Rs. 300. Existing applicants will get an additional amount of Rs. 200.
- This mega plantation drive will utilise saplings from the State Government’s nursery, where over 4 crore saplings have been cultivated. Of these 3 crore trees will be planted immediately, while 1 crore set for replacement purposes.
Note: It is a Jan Aandolan or a movement, encouraging citizens to plant trees economically. The first edition of ABA was launched on 8th June 2023.
