137th Edition of Wimbledon Championships: Carlos Alcaraz Retains his Men’s Singles Title; Barbora Krejcikova won the Women’s Singles title

137th Edition of The Wimbledon Championships 2024The 137th edition of the oldest tennis grand slam event “The Wimbledon Championships (Wimbledon) 2024” was held from 1st July to 14th July 2024 on the grass courts at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom (UK). 

  • Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz won the 2024 Gentlemen’s Singles title defeating seven-time champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia), this marks his 2nd consecutive Wimbledon title.
  • Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic won the 2024 Ladies Singles title by defeating Jasmine Paolini (Italy). This marks her second Grand Slam singles victory. She won her first Grand Slam (singles) at the French Open 2021.

Note: The 2024 Championship is the 130th staging of the Ladies’ Singles Championship event, the 56th in the Open Era and the third Grand Slam tournament of 2024

About Wimbledon Championship: 

i.Wimbledon was established in 1877 and was organised by the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

ii.Wimbledon is one of the 4 Grand Slam Events which includes the Australian Open, French Open and the US Open.

iii.Wimbledon takes place in Grass Outdoor Courts and every player must follow the dress code of whites.

Prize Money 

i.The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (All England Club) announced a total prize money fund of 50 million pounds for the Championships 2024.

ii.The gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles champions and runners-up received 2.7 million pound and 1.4 million pounds respectively.

iii.The winning doubles pair (gentlemen and ladies) received 650,000 pounds while the mixed doubles pair received 130,000 pounds.The Wimbledon Championships 2024About Carlos Alcaraz:

i.This marks Carlos’ 4th Grand Slam title. He has previously won the US Open in 2022, Wimbledon in 2023 and French Open(Roland-Garros) in 2024.

ii.He becomes the 2nd man after Roger Federer to win his first four grand slam finals.

iii.Carlos Alcaraz (21 years old) equals the Open Era record for most Grand Slams won at the age of 21 or under, joining Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander.

iv.He has also become only the 6th man in the Open era to win Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in the same year.

About Barbora Krejcíkova

i.She has won a total of 12 Grand Slam titles, including 2 in singles, 7 in doubles, and 3 in mixed doubles.

ii.She won all 7 women’s doubles Grand slam titles partnering with compatriot Kateřina Siniaková.

iii.Along with Venus Williams, She is one of only two active female players to have won the grand slams in all three disciplines in 2024, She was the runner-up at the French Open and became the 1st woman since Serena Williams in 2016 to get to the finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season.

Men’s Doubles:

Great Britain’s Henry Patten and Finland’s Harri Heliovaara won the 2024 Men’s doubles title by defeating Australia’s Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in the final. This marks the duo’s first doubles grand slam title.

  • Harri Heliovaara became the 1st Finnish man to win the Wimbledon doubles title while Henry Patten became the 3rd British man in the era to win the men’s doubles title at the All-England Club. The other brits who have achieved the feat are Jonathan Marray in 2012 and Neal Skupski in 2023.

Women’s Doubles:

Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend of the United States of America (USA) won the 2024 ladies’ doubles title at the Wimbledon Championship by defeating Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) in the finals.

Points to note: 

i.This marks Siniakova’s 3rd Wimbledon doubles trophy and a 9th major title overall and Townsend’s first-ever grand slam title.

ii.Taylor Townsend has previously finished as a runner-up at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 French Open.

Mixed Doubles: 

Hsieh Su-wei (Taiwan) and Jan Zielinski (Poland) won the 2024 mixed doubles title at the Wimbledon championship by defeating Mexican duo Santiago Gonzalez and Giuliana Olmos in the finals.

  • This marks the duo’s first mixed doubles title at Wimbledon.

Points to note: 

i.Hsieh Su-wei has previously won 7 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles which includes 4 Wimbledon (2013, 2019, 2021, 2023); 2 French Open (2014 & 2023) and 1 Australian Open (2024).

ii.This victory marks Jan Zielinski’s 2nd Grand Slam title. He won his first Mixed doubles title in the Australian Open 2024 with Hsieh Su-wei.
