NCW & CyberPeace Foundation Launched ‘Digital Shakti 5.0’National Commission for Women and CyberPeace Foundation launch 'Digital Shakti 5On July 5, 2024, the National Commission for Women (NCW) and CyberPeace Foundation launched ‘Digital Shakti 5.0’, the 5th phase of the Digital Shakti campaign, during a hybrid event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • This pan-India project aims to digitally empower and upskill women and girls in cyberspace.

Key People:
Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of NCW; Major Vineet Kumar, Founder & Global President of CyberPeace; Sanjay Seth, Member of Parliament (MP – Ranchi, Jharkhand); and Union Minister of State (MoS) Satya Pal Singh Bhaghel, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying (MoFAH&D) were present during the event.
About Digital Shakti 5.0:
i.Digital Shakti was started at Punjab University, Chandigarh in 2018 in collaboration with CyberPeace Foundation on the lines of Digital India. So far, the initiative has trained 6 lakh women on digital safety.
ii.Digital Shakti 4.0, which started in November 2022, has already reached more than 5 lakhs women.
iii.Digital Shakti 5.0, the 5th phase of the initiative, aims to extend this reach to 10 lakh (1 million) women.
iv.The initiative focus on

  • Bridging the skill gap with digital literacy training, empowerment workshops, and community engagement.
  • Introducing a multilingual Digital Resource Hub (DRH) and Chatbot to enhance cybersecurity knowledge.
  • Creating educational videos on various training topics, available on CyberPeace TV (YouTube).

Key Points:
i.As a part of program, CyberPeace Foundation has established responders in each state to provide training and enhance digital skills, cybersecurity awareness, AI, and emerging technologies for women and girls.

  • Notably, the gender gap in the science field remains significant, with only 43% of women, short of the desired 50%. This program aids in overcoming this gap.

ii.The launch included an interactive panel discussion on empowering women through “Empowering women through cyber skills: Bridging the gender gap in Tech and AI”, and “Cyber Wellness and Mental health: Addressing the psychological impact of cyber threats”.
Goals:

  • Train 30,000 participants in each state (numbers may vary by region).
  • Establish a strong network of volunteers driving positive change and creating a safe, informed, and innovative digital community.

MoMA Designated as Nodal Ministry for Haj Committee of IndiaHaj Committee now under Minority Affairs MinistryThe Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA), led by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, has been designated the nodal ministry for the Haj Committee of India (HCoI), a statutory body that organises the Haj pilgrimage for Indian pilgrims. This designation shifts the responsibility from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to the MoMA.

  • Previously, the MEA managed the Haj pilgrimage, including the administration of the Haj Committee Act of 2002.
  • The new rules called the Haj Committee (Amendment) Rules, 2024, now assign these duties to the MoMA.

Coordination with Other Ministries:
i.The MoMA in the central government will request nominations from the Union ministries of external affairs, home affairs, finance, and civil aviation.
ii.Each ministry will nominate one officer, not below the rank of joint secretary to the Government of India (GoI), as ex-officio members of the Haj Committee.
Haj Committee of India (HCOI):
i.The HCOI under the MoMA is set up under the provisions of the Haj Committee Act of 2002. It is a corporate body with perpetual succession.

  • The chairman of HCOI is  A. P. Abdullakutty since 2022.

ii.The Committee is responsible for organising the pilgrimage of Muslims for Haj, including the applications, selection, accommodation, transportation, and welfare in Saudi Arabia.
iii.It works closely with the Consulate General of India (CGI) in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), under the supervision of the MoMA.
iv.The HCOI maintains administrative relations with State/Union Territory (UT) Haj Committees (SHCs) for Haj operations.

Ministry of Culture initiates Project PARI for the 46th World Heritage Committee MeetingMinistry of Culture initiates Project PARI for the 46th World Heritage Committee MeetingThe Ministry of Culture (MoC) has initiated Project PARI (Public Art of India) ahead of the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee(WHC), which is scheduled to be held from 21st July to 31st July, 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The first intervention under Project PARI is taking place in Delhi coinciding with the meeting.
  • For the first time, India is set to chair and host the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s WHC.

About Project PARI:
i.The initiative is executed by the Lalit Kala Akademi and the National Gallery of Modern Art.
ii.Under this project, More than 150 visual artists from across India have come together to create various wall paintings, murals, sculptures and installation.
iii.The representation of art in public spaces will reflect the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India.

Annual Defence Production Hits Record High of Approximately Rs 1.27 lakh Crore in FY24: MoDAnnual defence production hits record high of approx. Rs 1.27 lakh crore in Financial Year 2023-24According to the Union Ministry of Defence (MoD),Government of India(GoI), India’s annual domestic defence production has hit a record high of approximately Rs 1.27 lakh crore i.e. Rs 1, 26,887 crore in FY24(2023-24).

  • This shows the growth of 16.7% over the defence production compared to Rs 1, 08,684 crore of total Value of Production (VoP) recorded in FY23 (2022-23).
  • This figure is based on the data received from all Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), other PSUs manufacturing defence items and private companies.

Key Points:
i.As per MoD, DPSUs/other PSUs; and Private sector contributed about 79.2% and 20.8% of the total Value of Production (VoP) in FY24 respectively.

  • The data revealed that in terms of absolute value, both DPSUs/PSUs and Private sector have recorded a stable growth in defence production.

ii.The data also highlighted that increase of defence exports have contributed significantly to the overall growth in the indigenous defence production. It showed that defence exports touched a record-high of Rs 21,083 crore in FY24 which reflects the growth of 32.5% compared to FY23, when the figure was Rs 15,920 crore.

  • The value of defence production in the last 5 years (since 2019-20) has been consistent at Rs 79,071 crore and grown by over 60%.

iii.According to MoD, this record-high growth in defence production is mainly possible due to the policy reforms and initiatives and ease of doing of business brought by the Government of India (GoI) in the last 10 years with main focus on attaining Aatmanirbharta (self reliance).

Indian Railways’ GSV Vadodara Signed an Agreement with Airbus For Aerospace Teaching and Research Indian Railways’ Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya and Airbus sign agreement for aerospace teaching and researchThe Indian Railways’ Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) Vadodara (Gujarat) has signed a definitive agreement with Airbus, an European multinational aerospace cooperation to advance aerospace education and research in India.
Signatories: The agreement was signed by Rémi Maillard, President and Managing Director (MD) of Airbus India and South Asia, and Professor Manoj Choudhary, Vice-Chancellor of GSV at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi.
Key People: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw who is also the First Chancellor of GSV; Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu (Union Minister of Civil Aviation); Ravneet Singh (Minister of State for Railways); Jaya Varma Sinha (Chairman and Chief Executive Officer-CEO, Railway Board); Vumlunmang Vualnam (Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation) and senior officials of the Railway Board were predent during the signing ceremony.

Key Points:
i.Under this definitive agreement, 40 GSV students will receive full scholarships for the entire program duration.
ii.It also includes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at GSV, and the introduction of the Airbus Aviation Chair Professor position at GSV.
iii.Additionally, GSV and Airbus will collaborate on providing executive training programs for working professionals in the aviation sector.

  • This aims to increase campus greenery and mitigate global warming’s effects.

Participants:
The drive was attended by Commanding Officer Rajive Barduwaj, SBI Branch Manager (BM) Nishan Sinhi along with officials from BSF, SBI, and with schoolchildren from Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Aim: To foster sustainable environment and sense of community through teamwork.

DMRC & RVNL Signed MoU to Work as Project Service Providers on Infrastructure Projects in India & Abroad
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate as Project Service Providers for design, construction, and consultancy projects in India and abroad.

  • As Project Service Providers, the DMRC and RVNL will cover project types such as metro systems, railways, high-speed rail, highways, mega-bridges, tunnels, institutional buildings, workshops or depots, Signal and Telecommunication (S&T) works, and railway electrification.
  • Signatories: The MoU was signed by Dr. P.K. Garg, Director (Business Development) of DMRC; and Rajesh Prasad, Director (Operations) of RVNL.

i.The RVNL is a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Railways (MoR).

Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian won Iran’s Presidential ElectionReformist Masoud Pezeshkian wins Iran's presidential electionOn 6th July 2024, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian (69 year old), a reformist politician and a heart surgeon, won Iran’s runoff presidential election with 53% of the vote. He became the 9th elected President of Iran.

  • He will take over from Mohammad Mokhber, who has been serving as the interim president of Iran since the death of Ebrahim Raisi on 19th May 2024.
  • He became the 2nd reformist President of Iran after his predecessor Ebrahim Raisi.

Key Points:
i.Pezeshkian was elected in a 2nd round of voting after no candidate secured a majority in the 1st round of election which was held on 28th June,2024 which saw the lowest voter turnout (i.e. 40%) for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979.
ii.According to the official vote count released by Iranian authorities, Pezeshkian secured 16.3 million votes out of 30.5 million votes counted which accounted 53.6% of total votes. While, his opponent, Saeed Jalili secured 13.5 million votes which accounted 44.3% of the total votes counted.
About Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian:
i.Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian served as deputy health minister and as the health minister under the administration of reformist President Mohammad Khatami.
ii.He was 1st elected as lawmaker in Iranian parliament in 2006 representing Tabriz constituency and later became the first deputy speaker of the parliament from 2016 to 2020.
iii.In 2011, He registered to run for president, but withdrew his candidacy. In 2021, he was barred from running by authorities.

IEX Board Reappoints SN Goel as CMD; Promotes Rohit Bajaj as Joint MD
New Delhi(Delhi) based Indian Energy Exchange Ltd(IEX) board approved the proposal to reappoint Satyanarayan Goel as its Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) for three years with effect from August 10 2024.

  • The board also decided to promote Rohit Bajaj, currently serving as Executive Director(ED) (non-board), business development, strategy, regulatory and Information Technology (IT), to the position of Joint Managing Director (MD) for three years, with effect from August 10 2024.
  • Goel will attain the age of 70 years on August 10 2024, and therefore, as per Companies Act, 2013, his term as MD will end from the closure of the business hours on August 9 2024.

Note: The IEX Board also approved the appointment of Rajeev Gupta as its Independent Non-Executive Director with effect from August 10 2024.

DRDO Conducted Successful Trials of the Indigenous Light Tank ‘Zorawar’ in Gujarat
India’s largest research organisation, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted successful trials of the indigenous Light Battle Tank ‘Zorawar’ in Hazira, Gujarat. It was reviewed by DRDO chief Dr Samir V Kamat. It is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army (IA) by the year 2027 after the completion of all the trials.
i.The light tank Zorawar with 25 tonnes in weight and it is the first time a fresh tank has been developed and made ready for trials in such a short time. The tank was designed in collaboration with Larsen and Toubro Limited (L&T).
ii.The DRDO and L & T have integrated Unmanned surface vehicles(USVs) in loitering munitions in the tank learning lessons from the Russia and Ukraine conflict.

  • It will likely be deployed at the Line of Actual Control(LAC) opposite China in the hilly terrains.

iii.The IA has placed an initial order for 59 Zorawar tanks, with plans to potentially procure a total of 354 light tanks. It will be at the forefront of a massive initiative to produce 295 more of these armoured vehicles.

Indo-Russian Joint Venture (JV) IRRPL Delivered 35,000 AK-203 Rifles to Indian ArmyIndo-Russian Joint Venture Delivers 35,000 AK-203 Rifles to Indian ArmyOn 5th July 2024, Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a Joint Venture (JV) between India and Russia, delivered 1st batch of 35,000 Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army. This development came just ahead of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia.

  • These rifles were produced at the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh(UP) and the production of these rifles in India is in full compliance with the PM’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Abhiyaninitiatives.
  • The main features of the project include complete technology transfer and to achieve 100% localization of AK-203 assault rifles production.

Note: In May 2024, IRRPL handed over 27,000 AK-203 assault rifles, with 25% of localization to Indian Army.
Background:
In July 2021, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India (GoI) and Russian Defence Minister General Sergey Shoigu signed contract worth Rs 5,124 crore. It aimed to manufacture of over 6.1 lakh 7.63×39mm AK-203 assault rifles in India under a joint India-Russia venture.
Key Features of AK-203 Assault Rifle:
i.These rifles will replace India’s indigenously developed Indian Small Arms Systems (INSAS) rifles inducted in Indian Army more than 3 decades ago and AK-47 rifles.
ii.AK-203 assault rifle has magazine capacity of 30 rounds. It has an effective range of 800metre(m).
iii.It has unique features such as folding and adjustable buttstock, windowed and rifled magazine and pistol grip made it more ergonomic.
iv.It has a gas operated, rotary bolt locking rifle and can fire 600 rounds in one minute.
About IRRPL:
It was established in 2019 as a joint venture between Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), now known as Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) from India and Rosoboronexport (RoE) and concern Kalashnikov of Russia.

NASA Set to Launch Habitable Worlds Observatory Telescope to Find Inhabited Planet by 2050NASA creates alien-hunting telescope, aims to discover inhabited planet by 2050 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is set to launch the ‘Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO)’ in 2040 to find proof of extraterrestrial life (aliens) and inhabited planets beyond the solar system.

  • HWO is a unique telescope, dubbed “Super Hubble”, capable of detecting a range of ‘biosignatures’ emitted by living organisms and discovering inhabited planets by 2050.

2 Gaganyaan Astronauts Shortlisted & 1 to Travel for a Mission to ISS with NASA
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has shortlisted 2 of its four trained Gaganyaan astronauts for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Only one of the shortlisted astronauts will go on the mission, which is set to be launched by October 2024 at the latest.

  • He has become the first F1 driver to have won this race for the 9th time extending the record, which he previously shared with Michael Schumacher.
  • This was the 104th Grand Prix win of Lewis Hamilton’s career and has also extended a record run for podiums at the same race to 12.
  • Three-time World Champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished 2nd in the race followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in the 3rd spot.

About Lewis Hamilton
i.Lewis Hamilton have claimed the British Grand Prix after losing in 56 races. He last won a race in the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
ii.He has won a joint-record seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles tied with Michael Schumacher.
iii. He has also become the first driver to win a race after reaching the rare milestone of 300 starts and it was the 344th race of Hamilton’s F1 career.
iv.This was his 150th podium finish for Mercedes and the 199th of his career.
v. With 17 years and one month gap between his first career win and the latest one, Hamilton has made an all-time record interval (Kimi Raikkonen had 15 years gap between wins).
vi.He also holds the record for the most championship points gained with 4724.5ahead of Sebastian Vettel in second place with 3,098 points and Max Verstappen in third with 2,823.5 points.

Jon Landau, Oscar-winning Film Producer, Passed AwayJon Landau, Oscar-winning Producer, Passes Away Jon Landau, an Academy Award(Oscar)winning American film producer, passed away at the age of 63 in Los Angeles, California, the United States of America (USA). He was born on 23rd July 1960 in New York, USA.
About Jon Landau:
i.Jon Landau began his career as a production manager in the 1980s.
ii.He was named an Executive Vice President of feature movies at the 20th Century Fox film production company, overseeing the production of films including Die Hard 2 (1990), The Last Of The Mohicans (1992), and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).
iii.He also co-produced films like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), and Dick Tracy (1990).
iv.He co-produced the filmmaker James Cameron’s 1997 hit film Titanic, the 1st film to cross over USD 1 billion mark at the global box office and won 11 Academy Awards including, Best Picture, Music, Sound and Visual Effects.
v.The duo also worked together for Avatar (2009), a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) movie, and its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lieutenant General Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik (Retired), launched a book titled, ‘Kargil War: The Turning Point,’ authored by Vir Chakra awardee, the late Colonel Magod Basappa Ravindranath, at the Cariappa Hall, Rajendra Singhji Army Officers Institute in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • The 12 Chapter Memoir of Colonel MB Ravindranath is published by Notion Press, an Indian self-publishing company based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Colonel MB Ravindranath, was the Commanding Officer (CO) of the Rajputana Rifles 2nd Battalion (2 RAJ RIF) during Operation Vijay (Kargil War) in 1999. He has passed away in April 2018.
  • This memoir recalls the challenges faced by the 2 RAJ RIF during the Kargil War.

Note:
i.The 2 RAJ RIF played a crucial role in capturing Tololing in the Dras Sector in the Kargil district of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh, on 12 June 1999.
ii.It was considered the 1st major success of the Indian Army in Operation Vijay.

  • 7 July 2024 marked the observance of the 3rd World Kiswahili Language Day.
  • The 2024 World Kiswahili Language Day event was observed under the theme: “Kiswahili: Education and Culture of Peace“.

Background:
i.In November 2021, UNESCO at its 41st session of the General Conference in Paris adopted the resolution 41 C/61, proclaiming the July 7th of every year as World Kiswahili Language Day.
ii.The 1st ever World Kiswahili Language Day was observed on 7 July 2022.
