Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has appointed A Ganesh Kumar and Debasis Kundu as members of the National Statistical Commission(NSC).
Now, the total strength of members of the commission including chairman is 5.
About A Ganesh Kumar:
i.At present, he is working as Professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research(IGIDR), Mumbai(Maharashtra).
ii.He previously worked as Regional Advisor at United Nations Economic Social Commission for Asia-Pacific(UN-ESCAP), Bangkok(Thailand).
- Also, worked as Research Fellow at International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), New Delhi(Delhi).
iii.He is a member of the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics(ACNAS), Central Statistics Office(CSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation(MoSPI).
iv.He was a member of the Working Group for the 77th Round of the National Sample Survey(NSS) conducted by National Statistical Office(NSO) during the period 1st January,2019 to 31st December,2019.
v.He has undertaken various projects for the Government of India(GoI), Reserve Bank of India(RBI) as well as for international organisations such as: Asian Development Bank(ADB), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, among others.
Awards:
i.He was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in 2001-02 Â at the University of East Anglia, Norwich(U.K.)
ii.He is the recipient of the D.K. Desai Prize presented by Indian Society of Agricultural Economics in 1999.
About Debasis Kundu:
i.He is currently working as a Professor at The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Kanpur(Uttar Pradesh).
ii.He was elected as Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India in 2001.
iii.Later, he was elected as Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, London, United Kingdom(U.K.) in 2003.
Awards:
i.He was awarded with CL Chandana Mathematics Award from Canadian World Education Foundation in 2004.
ii.He was the recipient of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis Distinguished Educator Award presented by Operation Research Society of India in 2017.
About National Statistical Commision(NSC):
i.It was constituted by Government of India(GoI) through a resolution dated 1st June, 2005 based on the recommendations of the panel headed by C.Rangarajan (Former RBI Governor).
- The Chief Statistician of India is the secretary of the commission.
Aim: The primary objective of the commission is to provide strategic direction and leadership to national statistical system in MoSPI.
ii.It act as the country’s nodal agency for core statistical activities, suggest standards for statistical surveys and ensure coordination with other departments.
iii.In December 2022, Government of India(GoI) had appointed Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar as the part-time chairman of the NSC of India for a period of 3 years.
