Former India stumper Syed Kirmani (65) was chosen for the prestigious Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award for 2015.
- He is the first wicketkeeper in 21 years to be nominated for this award. Popularly known as “Kojak” for his Telly Savalas-look, Kirmani will be the 23rd recipient of the award.
- He has being chosen for the award by BCCI’s special committee comprising President Shashank Manohar, Anurag Thakur (secretary) and Ram, Chairman and Publisher, Kasturi and Sons Ltd.
About Syed Kirmani
Syed Mujtaba Hussain Kirmani had played cricket for India and Karnataka as a wicket-keeper. He had played 49 ODIs for India and scored 373 runs.
- He has served as chairman of the senior national selection committee and vice-president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
- He was named as the best keeper in the 1983 World Cup, who shared an unbeaten 126 runs partnership with Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe.
- He holds distinction of 198 dismissals as a wicket keeper in 88 Tests and had scored 2759 runs including two centuries, at an average of 27.04
- In 1982, he was conferred with Padma Shri.
- Kirmani played the first of his 88 Tests in 1976 against New Zealand at the Eden Park, Auckland.
About Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award
The award has been instituted by BCCI to celebrate the birth centenary of Col. Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu, the country’s first Test captain. The annual Lifetime Achievement Award honours individuals for their contribution to Indian cricket on and off the field.
The Award comprises of medal, citation and prize money of Rs. 25 lakh.
