According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index (August 2023 edition) India is ranked 47th among 145 countries with median download speed of 50.21 Mbps(Megabits per second). India has moved up 72 places, from 119th place in 2022 to the 47th position in 2023.
- The list is topped by United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the median download speeds of 210.89 Mbps. Qatar and Kuwait stands at second and third rank with the download speed of 192.71Mbps and 153.86Mbps respectively.

The bottom five countries are – Venezuela(141st), Yemen(142nd), Sudan(143rd), Afghanistan(144th) and Cuba(145th).
A long jump:
i.India’s massive growth in the ranking is due to the roll out of 5th Generation (5G) internet led by telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel across India in October 2022.
- The median download speeds improved from 13.87 MegaBits Per Second (Mbps) in September 2022 to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023 reflecting a 3.59 times increase.
ii.In addition to faster speeds, 5G has also led to higher customer satisfaction. Net Promoter Scores (NPS) indicate that 5G users consistently rate their network operators more positively compared to 4G users.
iii.As of August 2023, median 5G download speeds exceeded 240 Mbps across all telecom areas.
- Kolkata stands with highest median download speed of 385.50 Mbps.
A comparison:
India is standing ahead of its neighouring countries as well as some G20 countries.
- Indonesia(95th), Bangladesh(118), Sri Lanka(126), and Pakistan(127), Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place), and South Africa (48th place).
Jammu and Kashmir:
In October 2022, download speeds varied from 10.37 Mbps in North East to 21.49 Mbps in Jammu and Kashmir. However, by August 2023, speeds improved, with all regions exceeding 28 Mbps.
- The North East reached 28.02 Mbps, while Jammu and Kashmir has the fastest mobile median download speeds in the country with 150.95 Mbps (surpassing Bihar (73.00 Mbps) and Kolkata (66.47 Mbps)).

i.The maximum download speed of Jio and Airtel is 1882.61Mbps and 1735.91 Mbps respectively.
Ranking Under ‘Fixed Broadband Speeds’ Category
In ‘fixed broadband speeds’ category of the index India attained 86th rank with the download speed of 54.17Mbps.
- With the download speed of 254.65 Mbps Singapore tops the category followed by Hong Kong (243.59 Mbps) and Chile (240.43 Mbps)

i.The telecom service providers offer 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services to complement their existing 5G offerings.
