World Hunger Day - May 28 2023World Hunger Day is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to create awareness about the significance of ending hunger. The day also highlights the significance of the Global Food Crisis, towards finding a sustainable solution towards a hunger-free planet.

The theme of World Hunger Day 2023 observed on 28th May 2023 is “Celebrating sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty”.

Significance: The observance is dedicated to focusing special attention on the global food crisis and its impacts on youth.

Background:

World Hunger Day is an international initiative, established in 2011 by ‘The Hunger Project’, A Global, Non-Profit, Strategic Organisation which runs programmes across 12 countries in Africa, Latin America and South Asia.

  • The first-ever World Hunger Day was observed on 28th May 2011.

Key Points: 

i.According to FAO, around 828 million people across the globe (10% of the world’s population) were affected by hunger in 2021, 46 million more than the 2020 and 150 million more from 2019.

ii.The United Nations(UN)’s Sustainable Development Goal(SDG) 2 aims to achieve “zero hunger” and seeks sustainable solutions to end hunger in all its forms by 2030.

Global Report on Food Crises 2023:

i.The Global Report on Food Crises 2023 states that the number of people experiencing acute food insecurity and requiring urgent food and livelihood assistance is on the rise.

ii.In 2022, around 258 million people across 58 countries and territories experienced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels ( Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 3-5), up from 193 million people in 53 countries and territories in 2021.

  • The report aims to inform humanitarian and development activities by providing independent and consensus-based evidence and analysis.
  • The report is published by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN) in support of the Global Network against Food Crises (GNAFC),

Global Hunger Index 2022:

According to the 2022 Global Hunger Index (GHI) rankings, India has slipped 6 places and ranked 107, out of 121 countries. With a score of 29.1, India has a level of hunger that is serious.

  • Yemen is the country with the highest GHI score in 2022, ranked at 121. With a score of 45.1, Yemen has a level of hunger that is alarming.
