Govt has advanced the date for implementation of the roll out of Bharat Stage (BS) stage V and VI norms for four-wheelers by 3 years.
- According to the roadmap earlier laid down by the Auto Fuel Policy 2003, BS-V norms were to implemented from April 1, 2022 and BS-VI which aim at substantial reduction in NOx/4C levels from April 1, 2024 but now itās 2019 and 2021
Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a draft notification for implementation of BS-V and BS-VI norms for the automobile sector, covering four wheeler categories.
- With this advancement road transport sector should take a lead role in reducing the harmful effects of emissions on environment and climate change.
- This step reflects a firm commitment to play a major role in reducing vehicular emissions.
About Bharat stage (BS) norms
BS norms are emission standards decided by the government to regulate the amount of air pollutants from vehicles. They were adopted in line with European regulation standard āEuro normsā in 2000.
Currently there are 4 standards of Bharat stage (BS) norms have been issued by government with prescribed limit on the release of pollutants. Issued BS standards are as follows:
BS-IĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Euro 1Ā Ā Ā Ā 2000
BS-IIĀ Ā Ā Euro 2Ā Ā Ā Ā 2005
BS-IIIĀ Ā Euro 3Ā Ā Ā Ā 2010
BS-IVĀ Ā Euro 4Ā Ā Ā Ā 2015 (63 cities till 1 April 2015)
Draft norms for two- and three-wheeler categories will be notified shortly with advanced timeline similar to the four wheeler category.
