The United Nations (UN)’s World Science Day for Peace and Development is annually observed across the globe on November 10 to highlight the important role of science in society and the need to engage the general people in discussions about rising scientific concerns.
- 10th November 2022 marks the observance of the 21st edition of World Science Day for Peace and Development.
The theme of World Science Day for Peace and Development 2022 is ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development‘.
- World Science Day 2022 is contributing to the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development(IYBSSD) – 2022 by celebrating this theme.
Aim:
World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to
- Strengthen public awareness of the role of science in peaceful and sustainable societies,
- Promote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries,
- Renew national and international commitment to the use of science for the benefit of societies,
- Draw attention to the challenges faced by science in raising support for the scientific endeavour.
Background:
i. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted resolution 31 C/Resolution 20 in 2001 and proclaimed the 10th November of every year as the World Science Day for Peace and Development.
ii. The 1st ever World Science Day for Peace and Development was observed on 10th November 2002.
Planned activities for World Science Day 2022:
UNESCO celebrated World Science Day in 2022 by presenting a webinar on 10 November on the theme of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development which will be live-streamed.
- This section will be gradually expanded over the following months as partners in the International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development provide information about upcoming activities.
International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development(IYBSSD) – 2022:
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/76/14 on 2nd December 2021 and proclaimed the year 2022 as the “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development” to recognise the value of basic science and to enhance global awareness about the importance of basic science to attain sustainable development.
UNESCO Science Report:
i. In 1993, the UNESCO Science Report was launched under the name of World Science Report. It has issued 7 reports in the series since then.
- The science report is published every 5 years by UNESCO.
- The report analyses the emerging trends in science, technology and innovation policy, and governance.
ii. The previous edition (7th edition) of the report ‘UNESCO Science Report: the race against time for smarter development’ was published in June 2021.
