World Health Organization’s (WHOs) World Patient Safety Day is annually observed across the world on 17 September to create awareness about various preventative measures which should be taken to make sure safety of patients.
- The theme of World Patient Safety Day 2022 is ‘Medication Safety’ along with the slogan ‘Medication Without Harm’.
- This theme has been chosen to specifically draw attention to the need to improve systems to support safe medication and address unsafe practices.
Background:
i.World Patient Safety Day was established by the 72nd World Health Assembly through the adoption of resolution WHA 72.6 – ‘Global Action on Patient Safety’.
ii.The day focuses on preventing and reducing risks, errors, and harm that patients face and also focuses on increasing the implementation of the WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm.
Objective:
i.The main objective of World Patient Safety Day is to increase public awareness and enhance global understanding of patient safety.
ii.The Day calls for solidarity and united action by all countries and international partners to increase patient safety and reduce patient harm.
Aim:
World Patient Safety Day aims to raise global awareness of medication-related harm caused due to errors and unsafe practices, which regards patient safety on the global level.
2022 Campaign of World Patient Safety Day:
i.The call for action of the global campaign is “Know Check Ask.” KNOW your medication.; CHECK if you have the right patient, medicine, route, dose, and time; ASK your patient if they understand.
ii.It is to encourage those who take medication and their caregivers to take an active role in managing their medication.
