In a first-of-its-kind effort, the Indian Navy Ships(INS) (warships) set sail to 6 continents – North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia – as a part of the celebration of 75 years of Independence of India (“Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”).
- The navy warships are in the process demonstrate sailors operational potential and diplomatic outreach.
Key Points:
i.The Indian Warships hoisted India’s Tri-colour national Flag across 6 continents, 3 oceans and 6 different time zones and they also performed other ceremonial activities after berthing.
ii.The warships, that are doing exercises and other engagements with different navies on their ways will hoist the tricolour in 6 different countries.
iii.As a part of the celebration of India’s independence, A coordinated effort of this magnitude is happening for the first time along with friendly nations and maritime allies.

Indian warships berthed in San Diego in the United States of America(USA)(North America), in Rio De Janerio in Brazil(South America), Mombasa in Kenya (Africa), Muscat in Oman and Singapore (Asia), London in the United Kingdom(UK)(Europe), and Perth in Western Australia(Australia).
Australia:
i.Patrol vessel INS Sumedha docked at Perth in Australia.
- The INS Sumedha participated in the Maritime Partnership Exercise(MPX) with the Australian Navy ship HMAS Anzac, an Anzac class frigate of the Royal Australian Navy on 17 August 2022
- INS Sumedha is part of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam and functions under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
- INS Sumedha has been deployed to the South Eastern Indian Ocean.
Asia:
i.INS Saryu entered the Changi Naval Base in Singapore as a part of the Indian navy’s initiative to hoist Tiranga in 6 Continents.
ii.Stealth-guided missile destroyers INS Chennai and INS Kochi entered Muscat harbour in Oman on 14 August 2022 as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
- INS Chennai and Kochi participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise with European Union Naval Force ship ESPS Numancia. Cmde Rui Correia, CTF 465, was embarked onboard ESPS Numancia for the exercise.
Africa:
Talwar-class frigate INS Tabar (F44) arrived at Mombasa, Kenya on 14 August 2022 and participated in a number of activities, including a flag hoisting ceremony.
South America:
INS Tarkash docked at Rio De Janerio in Brazil on 15th August 2022.
- This is the first deployment of an Indian Naval Ship to South America in over 20 years.
- INS Tarkash participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise(MPX) with the Navy of Brazil – Ship Uniao, a Niteroi class frigate.
- INS Tarkash is presently deployed in the Atlantic.
North America:
INS Satpura docked at San Diego Harbour, the USA on 13 August 2022.
- This is the first time an Indian Naval Warship has reached the west coast of North America.
- INS Satpura, an indigenously designed and built 6000-tonne guided missile stealth frigate, participated in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise 2022 held in Hawaii, USA, in June 2022.
Europe:
The Made-in-India naval ship INS Tarangini, docked at Thames Quay in east London, UK.
- The name Tarangini is derived from the Hindi word Tarang, which means waves. Tarangini, therefore, means the one who rides the waves
- INS Tarangini is part of the first training squad of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command and is based at Kochi, Kerala.
