Cabinet Approvals on June 8, 2022Cabinet Appoval on June 8, 2022On June 8, 2022 the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi approved the following proposals:
i.The Union Cabinet has approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from Government of India (Gol) to NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), a wholly owned Public Sector Enterprise (PSE) of GOI under the administrative control of the Department of Space.
ii.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the PM Narendra Modi, has approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Kharif Crops for Marketing Season 2022-23 to ensure remunerative prices to the growers for their produce and encourage crop diversification.

Cabinet Approvals with Foreign Countries on June 8, 2022Cabinet Approval with Foreign Countries

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi approved the following proposals with foreign countries which were briefed by Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) during a media briefing on Cabinet decisions, at National Media Centre in New Delhi, Delhi.
 i.Cabinet has approved the proposal for signing a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Cooperation in the field of Industries and Advanced Technologies.
ii.The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of MoU to establish collaborative guidelines between the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan and Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), India to carry out and implement joint research on air quality and climate change.
iii.The Union Cabinet also approved the signing of MoU between S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), Kolkata (West Bengal), India and Leibniz-Institut fur Festkorper- und Werkstoffforschung Dresden e.V. (IFW Dresden e.V.), Dresden, Germany for scientific cooperation in the field of Novel Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials.
iv.The Union Cabinet approved the MoU between MoHUA, Government of India and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Government of Australia for Technical Cooperation for Australia-India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI).
v.The Union Cabinet also approved the signing of MoU among DBT, ICMR, and International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), US in health sector.

Govt Launches PMMSY dashboard; Investment of around Rs 7,243 cr doneInvestment of Rs 7,243 cr done under fishery scheme

Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala launched a Management Information System (MIS) dashboard for Padhan Mantri Matsya Samapada Yojana (PMMSY) for aggregating information on one platform.

  • The project investment of Rs 7,242.90 crore has been made in the Financial Years 2020 to 2022(FY20-22) under PMMSY.

Background
In May 2020, PMMSY was launched as a flagship scheme for focused and sustainable development of the fisheries sector with an estimated investment of Rs 20,050 crore during a period of five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25.

Objective of PMMSY – MIS: 

  • To monitor the PMMSY scheme activities and their progress in all participating States/Union Territories(UTs).
  • To strategically utilise the information for informed decision-making.

Key Highlights
The data is fed into the MIS system at district level by each participating states/UTs which is further used for coordination, gap analysis and requirement to take corrective actions.

  • The Department of Fisheries and project management consultant (PMC) team has been simultaneously making efforts for onboarding all states/UTs through hands-on training on the platform and creating awareness.

India Plans to Double Marine Product Exports to Rs 1 lakh Cr in 5 years
According to the information provided by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal during a meeting in Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) at Kochi, Kerala, India aims to double marine product exports to Rs.1 lakh crore in the next 5 years from the present around Rs 50,000 crore.

  • This can be achieved through sustainable fishing, ensuring quality and variety, promotion of coastal shipping and aquaculture, and by supporting the entire fisheries ecosystem.
  • Union Minister also had discussion with Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) and stakeholders of the Rubber Sector at MPEDA.
  • A roadmap to achieve the target of Rs.1 lakh crore for marine product exports was presented by the KN Raghavan, Chairman, MPEDA.

Highlights
The Free Trade Agreements (FTA) have been finalised with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Australia and the agreements are in progress with the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada.

  • The negotiations with the European Union (EU) will begin in Brussels, Belgium on the 17th June 2022.

Hyper-Sensitive Airports to Install PIDS By 2023; Indigo & American Airlines Launches Codeshare Agreement
As per the circular provided by The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), all ‘hyper-sensitive’ airports need to install a Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS) by December 2023, which helps in alerting security agencies of any intrusion through the boundary walls of the airport.

  • Greenfield airports that are not part of the government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) will also install PIDS.
  • The airports coming up under RCS will plan the installation of PIDS at the development stage itself for the purpose of obtaining clearance of design stage security.
  • Further, non-RCS greenfield airports shall plan installation of PIDS at design stage itself for the purpose of obtaining clearance of design stage security vetting in terms of rule 5 (3) of the Aircraft (Security) Rules 2011.

The directions are being issued to ensure the safety and security of passengers, crew, ground personnel and the general public in all matters relating to safeguarding against acts of unlawful interference with civil aviation.
Note – The Bengaluru International Airport in Karnataka has recently introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven, assistance robots for enhancing flyers experience. At present, 10 robots have been deployed at the Kempegowda International Airport under the trial stage.
IndiGo & American Airlines Launches Codeshare Agreement
IndiGo and American Airlines have launched a codeshare agreement that allows American Airlines to sell seats on the IndiGo’s flights operating on Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Mumbai routes.
Highlights
i.American Airlines – Currently, American Airlines operates flights on the New York-Delhi route only.

  • The plan to extend the codeshare agreement in the near future includes more destinations in India, in addition to Bengaluru and Mumbai.

ii.IndiGoIndiGo is India’s largest airline that already has codeshare agreements with Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Air France-KLM airlines.

Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland Elected to Serve as Non-Permanent Members On UNSCEcuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland elected to UNSC

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland to serve as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term beginning January 01, 2023.

  • The newly elected countries will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway, which will vacate their seats at the end of 2022.
  • The UNSC is a United Nations (UN) organisation tasked with maintaining global peace and security.

On June 9, 2022, the UNGA held elections to elect the five non-permanent members for the two-year period 2023–24. Abdulla Shahid, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, announced the result.
Selecting Members for the UNSC
i. A total of 15 countries make up the United Nations Security Council. China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US) are the five permanent members (Permanent Five (P5) members), with veto power.
ii.The UN General Assembly, which is made up of all 193 UN Member States, elects the 10 non-permanent members, who are elected for two-year terms.
iii. Even if they run unopposed, countries must win a two-thirds majority, or 128 votes, to secure a seat on the UNSC.
Crux Of the UNSC Election 2022
i. In total, 192 UN Member States took part in the election. The five new non-permanent members were elected nearly unopposed.
ii.The five newly-elected countries will join Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) around the Security Council’s signature horseshoe table.
iii. Candidates competed for five seats in three regional groupings in 2022: two for African and Asia-Pacific countries, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for Western Europe and other countries.
Vote Tally:
i. In the African and Asia-Pacific group, Mozambique received 192 votes, marking its first time serving on the UNSC. Japan garnered 184 votes, and Mongolia three.
ii.Mozambique received 192 votes in the African and Asia-Pacific groups, marking its first tenure on the UNSC. Japan received 184 votes, while Mongolia received three.
iii. Ecuador, the only Latin American and Caribbean candidate, received 190 votes, with two countries abstaining.
iv.Switzerland, another new member of the UNSC, received 187 votes, while Malta received 185 votes, again with two countries abstaining.

On June 8, 2022, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF) & Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MoCA) unveiled the fifth edition of Enhanced Access and Service Excellence – ‘EASE 5.0: Enhanced digital experience; data-driven, integrated, and inclusive banking, which provides the Common Public Sector Banks (PSBs) Reforms Agenda for fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23) under the EASENext program.
Need For Such Reforms: Since all PSBs are now profitable and have stronger balance sheets, it has become essential for them to harness this advantage to further boost their competitiveness.

RBI Cancels Certificate of Registration Of 3 NBFCS; Two NBFCs Surrenders CoR; RBI Cancels the License of Mudhol Co-Operative Bank, Karnataka

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the certificate of registration (CoR) of three non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), including two housing finance companies (HFCs).

The RBI has cancelled the CoR of Malik Motor Finance Limited, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in exercise of its powers under Section 45-IA (6) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

  • As a result, as described in clause (a) of Section 45-I of the RBI Act, 1934, Malik Motor Finance Limited shall not perform non-banking financial institution business.

The RBI has also cancelled the CoRs of the following housing financing companies (HFCs), exercising powers granted to it under Section 29A (6) of the National Housing Bank Act, 1987.

  • North East Region Housing Finance Company Limited in Aizawl, Mizoram.
  • Aryarth Housing Finance Limited in Gurgaon, Haryana.

As a result, the companies listed above are not permitted to operate as a housing finance institution or a non-banking financial institution, as defined by the National Housing Bank Act of 1987 and the Reserve Bank of India Act of 1934, respectively.

Two NBFCs Surrendered Their CoR 

Two NBFCs have surrendered their certificates of registration (CoR) issued by the RBI. They are:

  • Empower India Capital Investments Private Limited in Ernakulam, Kerala
  • Mangalmayee Garments Private Limited (presently known as Abhijeet Ferrotech Limited) in Kolkata, West Bengal.

RBI Cancels the License of Mudhol Co-Operative Bank, Karnataka

The RBI has cancelled the license of Mudhol Co-operative Bank Limited in Bagalkot, Karnataka, preventing it from conducting banking operations, with effect from the close of business on June 08, 2022.

  • The bank is prohibited from doing “banking” operations, which includes, the acceptance and repayment of deposits as defined in Section 5(b) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, with immediate effect.

The bank’s licence was cancelled because it lacked appropriate capital and earning possibilities, and it had failed to meet the RBI’s requirements.

  • The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Karnataka has been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.
  • On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of ₹5,00,000/- (Rupees Five Lakh only) from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961.

On 9th June 2022 ICICI Bank partnered with digital EMI/pay-later platform ZestMoney, to expand its ‘Cardless EMI’ facility for purchases on retail and e-commerce platforms.

  • Customers can convert transactions up to Rs. 10 lakh into Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs).
  • With this partnership, the bank’s customers can use pre-approved cardless credit to instantly buy products/ services using ZestMoney and pay in equated monthly instalments (EMIs).
  • Further, the Bank’s customers will also be able to use ZestMoney’s flagship ‘Pay-in-3’ offering, where they can split the bill into 3 EMIs without extra cost.

Note – In 2020, ICICI Bank was the first bank to introduce the ‘Cardless EMI’ facility to offer cashless purchases.

India’s Krishna Srinivasan Appointed as Director of IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has appointed Indian national Krishna Srinivasan, as the director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department (APD) from 22nd June 2022. He is currently serving as the Deputy Director in APD and oversees the APD’s surveillance work on large and systemically important countries like China and Korea, and smaller states in the Pacific like Fiji and Vanuatu.

  • He will succeed Changyong Rhee who relinquished his role as APD Director immediately, following his nomination as a candidate for Governor of the Central Bank of Korea.

A wholly-owned arm of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) is set to invest Rs 2200 crore in  IIFL Home Finance Limited for 20% of its stake. This will be one of the largest equity investments in the affordable housing finance segment in India by a financial investor.

  • ADIA is a globally-diversified investment institution that invests funds on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi.
  •  IIFL Home Finance Limited(Established in 2006) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of IIFL Finance Limited (formerly known as IIFL Holdings Limited).

Key Points:
i.The ADIA and IIFL Home Finance are subjected to regulatory approvals.
ii.Avendus Capital and IIFL Securities were the financial advisors to IIFL Home Finance for this transaction.
iii.IIFL Home Finance will make use of the additional capital to continue its granular expansion strategy into new markets to address the growing demands for housing loans.

China releases New Comprehensive Geologic Map of the Moon; World’s ‘Most Detailed to date’ Map of Moon

China has released a new comprehensive geologic map of the moon. This is the world’s “most detailed to date” map of the moon. The new map of scale 1:2,500,000 was published by Science Bulletin.  This is expected to contribute to scientific research, exploration and landing site selection on the Moon.

  • The map includes 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 rock types and 14 types of structures, which provides abundant information about the geology of the moon and its evolution.
  • This project was led by the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences along with the Chinese Academy of Geological Science, China University of Geosciences and Shandong University.
  • This high-resolution topographic map was prepared based on the data from Chang’e project, the lunar exploration project of China, and other data and research findings from various international organisations.

TN CM MK Stalin Launches Logo & Mascot of 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2022TN CM launches logo, mascot of 44th Chess Olympiad

Tamil Nadu(TN) Chief Minister(CM) MK Stalin, launched the official logo and mascot named Thambi (which means younger brother in Tamil) for 44th International Chess Federation (FIDE-Fédération Internationale des Échecs) Chess Olympiad which is scheduled to be held from 28th July to 10th August 2022 in at Mamallapuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Note: A record 343 teams from 187 countries have already entered for the tournament in Open and Women’s sections.
About the Mascot: Thambi:
i.The mascot Thambi is a knight dressed in the traditional Tamil attire Veshti (Dhoti) with a shirt. The word “Chess Believe” is seen on the shirt of the mascot.
ii.The mascot is seen standing with folded hands (greeting gesture).
Olympiad Torch Relay: 
i.Previously the FIDE has announced the introduction of the Olympiad Torch Relay, which will be an annual event, starting from the 2022 event, which celebrates the popularity of the game in India, the birthplace of chess.
ii.The relay will start in India and travel across all continents before reaching the host city.
iii.In 2022, due to paucity of time, the relay will be run only in India.
Maharashtra Open Chess 2022: Tajikistan’s Farrukh Amonatov wins title
Farrukh Amonatov, the chess grandmaster(GM) of Tajikistan, won the inaugural (1st) Maharashtra International Open Grandmaster chess tournament 2022 held in Pune, Maharashtra. The tournament was held from 31st May to 8th June 2022.

  • The tournament organised by Maharashtra Chess Association under the All India Chess Federation (AICF) witnessed the participation of 140 players from 24 countries.
  • Belarusian GM Aleksej Aleksandrov took the 2nd place while Indian GM Kalyan secured the 3rd place while Indian GM Deep Sengupta has finished 4th.
  • Indian chess players, L R Srihari has secured the 6th place and MR Venkatesh and Neelesh Saha has secured 9th and 10th place respectively.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day 2022 – June 9 International Level Crossing Awareness Day - June 9 2022International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD), a global initiative, was observed on 9th June 2022 to create awareness about level crossing safety. The day also aims to create public awareness about the dangers of misbehaviours at the level crossing.

  • Since 2009, The annual ILCAD campaign is spearheaded by the Union Internationale des Chemins de fer (UIC)(International union of railways).

9th June 2022 marks the observance of the 14th International Level Crossing Awareness Day(ILCAD). 

  • The 13th ILCAD was observed on 10th June 2021 and the 12th edition was observed on 11th June 2020. 

The motto of 2022 ILCAD is “Don’t put your life at risk, stay away from tracks!”.
The 2022 year focus is “Vulnerable People”.
Significance of 2022 ILCAD:
i.The 14th ILCAD campaign was launched during the International Conference held from 8th to 10th June 2022 in Denver, Colorado, the United States of America(USA).
ii.The event was preceded by a special session on “Trespass and Suicide Prevention” on 8th June 2022.

J-K LG Launches Accidental Insurance Cover of Rs 15 Lakh for Govt Employees

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha launched a people centric ‘Accidental insurance scheme’ under which J&K bank will extend free group personal insurance cover of Rs 15 lakh for all government employees.

  • The free Group Personal Insurance Cover is extended to all the permanent employees of J&K Government in addition to the offers that they are entitled to on behalf of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between J&K Bank and J&K Government.
  • J&K banks also launched the Phone Pe Loan facility for government employees.
  • The LG directed the J&K bank to enhance the insurance amount from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh from the financial year 2022.

Key Highlights:
i.The bank has contracted with Oriental Insurance Company for extending the insurance cover.
ii.The free group accidental insurance shall cover personal accidental deaths under all circumstances, including terrorism, on anytime and anywhere basis and shall settle the claims within 15 working days of submission of all requisite papers.
iii.Under the ‘Phone Pe Loan’ scheme, the salaried employees can avail personal consumption loan and cash credit facilities at discounted rate of interest.
