According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2023, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Karnataka, ranked 155 gaining 31 places since 2022 ranking and emerged as the fastest rising South Asian university among the top 200 universities.
- The ranking was topped by the United States(US)’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) followed by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom(UK) and Stanford University(US).
IISc becomes World’s top Research University:
i.IISc has emerged as number one (globally) in the “Citations per Faculty (CpF)” indicator which is used by QS to evaluate the impact of research produced by universities.
ii.According to the ranking, 13 Indian universities have improved their research impact relative to global competitors.
iii.According to the CpF indicator, IISc Bengaluru is the world’s top research university, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 for this metric.
iv.Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT) Guwahati (37th for CpF), IIT Roorkee (47th for CpF) and the University of Madras (48th for CpF) (new entry) are among the global top-50 research institutions.

- On 8th June 2022, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), London(UK)-based higher education analyst, released the 19th edition of QS World University Rankings, “QS World University Rankings 2023”.
- The QS World University Rankings 2023 ranks the top 900 universities based on 8 key ranking indicators.
This is the largest ever ranking with 1,418 institutions across one hundred locations up from 1300 in the previous year.

Highlights: (Ranking of Indian Universities)
i.Among the 41 Indian institutes featured in the ranking, 12 institutes have improved their score over last year, 12 remained stable, 10 declined, and 7 are new entries.
ii.5 Public Institutions of Eminence have secured a higher rank compared to the previous edition: IISc, IITB, IITD, IITM, and IIT-Kharagpur while 2 institutes: the University of Delhi and the University of Hyderabad, declined, and one, IIT-Banaras Hindu University has remained stable.
iii.Chandigarh University (801-1,000) is the youngest of the new entries, having been established less than ten years ago.
iv.OP Jindal Global University is the highest-ranked private university for the 3rd consecutive year.
v.30 Indian Universities have declined in Faculty and Student Ratio(FSR) indicator and for the first time, 2 Indian universities have ranked among the top 250 for FSR.
vi.According to FSR, Savitribai Phule Pune University (225th for FSR) is the highest performing institute followed by OP Jindal Global University (235th for FSR) and by IISc Bengaluru (276th for FSR).
vii.IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the only national universities featured among the world’s top-100 in QS’ Employer Reputation (AR) metric, ranking 59th and 72nd respectively.
