The Minister for Culture, Minister of Tourism and Minister of Development of the North- Eastern Region, G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the first of its kind, a 2 – Day Global Summit on ‘Reimagining Museums in India‘ virtually on 15th-16th February 2022 in Hyderabad, Telangana.
- Participants – Over 3000 participants from India, Australia, France, Italy, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States are participating in the summit and participation is open to the public.
About the summit:
i.The summit has been organised under the aegis of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the flagship program on preserving, protecting, and perpetuating our cultural heritage to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
ii.Four themes of the online summit – Architecture and Functional Needs; Management; Collections (including Curation & Conservation practises); and, Education and Audience Engagement.
Efforts by GoI:
i.The Government of India (GoI) is developing 10 museums on tribal freedom fighters to recognise their contribution in our freedom struggle and also delivers continued support towards specialised museums such as Textiles and Crafts museums, Defence Museums and Railway Museums.
ii.Since 2014 the Ministry of culture has also been funding 110 museums across India and 18 science museums are being developed to promote scientific temper.
iii.The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which is functioning under the Ministry of culture also runs 52 museums across India.
Efforts by states:
i.Telangana has initiated a proposal for a Science City in Hyderabad, the support for 10 Museums including the Salar Jung museum and the Tribal Museum for which allotment of land is being awaited from the state government of Telangana.
ii.Further, 6 museums are being supported in Andhra Pradesh including a Tribal Museum in Lambasingi.
Preserving Rich heritage & culture:
Around 95% of the heritage object that was stolen or taken away has been returned during the tenure of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
- Out of the 212 antiques that have been returned since 1976, 199 were returned after 2014, among which 157 antiques have been returned from the United States of America (USA) recently.

The Summit inauguration event was also attended and addressed by Alberto Garlindini, President of International Council of Museums; Weber Nodoro, Director General of International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of the Cultural Property and Smt. Lily Pandeya, Joint Secretary Ministry of Culture.
