MoTA sanctions Rs 2.26cr for festival of Medaram Jathara 2022 in Telangana
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has sanctioned Rs 2.26 crore for various activities related to the tribal festival of Medaram Jathara 2022, the second-largest fair of India, after the Kumbh Mela.
- It is celebrated by the second-largest Tribal Community of Telangana, the Koya tribe for four days.
- For 2022, it is being celebrated from February 16-19.
Objective:
The festival aims to generate awareness and a harmonious bond between the visitors and the Tribal communities of Telangana.
Key Points:
i.The Medaram Jathara is celebrated biennially (once in two years) in the month of February in honour of the Goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma, mother and daughter duo. The Jatara begins at Medaram (a remote place in the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary) in Tadvai Mandal in Mulugu District, Telangana.
- It commemorates the valiant fight of these Goddesses against the then Kakatiya dynasty rulers protesting exaction of land tribute even at the time of severe drought.
- It was declared as State Festival during 1998.
ii.It should be noted that the tribal culture and heritage will be the cynosure for 2022, under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
iii.Further, the Ministry also sanctioned ₹ 7.00 Cr in 2019-20 and ₹ 5.00 Cr in 2021-22, under Article 271(1) for establishing infrastructure like multi-purpose buildings in and surroundings of Medaram for utilising those as community shelters during the Jathara period and as agriculture godowns in other seasons by local Tribals.
Central Govt constituted Ken-Betwa link Project Authority and 20-member Steering Committeei.The Central Government has constituted a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) i.e. Ken-Betwa Link Project Authority (KBLPA) for the implementation of the Ken-Betwa interlinking of rivers (ILRs) project. It also formed a 20-member National Steering Committee (SC) which will monitor the implementation.
ii.The SPV will be headed by a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of additional secretary rank.
iii.On the other hand, the committee will be chaired by the Secretary (Currently- Pankaj Kumar), Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Static Points about Rives Betwa and Ken:
i.The river Betwa or Betravati which is also called river Vetrawati in Sanskrit one of the major river basins of Madhya Pradesh (MP). It is a tributary of the Yamuna. It rises in the Vindhya Range just north of Hoshangabad in MP and flows north-east through MP and Orchha to UP.
ii.Ken River is one of the major rivers in the Bundelkhand region of central India. It is also a tributary of the Yamuna. The river originates near the Village Ahirgawan in Jabalpur District of MP and joins the Yamuna River, near Chilla Village in UP.

GoI Bans Import of Drones; Exceptions for R&D, Defence & Security PurposesThe Government of India (GoI) has announced a ban on import of foreign manufactured drones, with exceptions for research and development (R&D), defence & security purposes. This move is made by GoI to strengthen the domestic drone manufacturing industry under ‘Made in India Drones’ by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
i.Union Budget FY23 has proposed the Drone Shakti scheme to facilitate the use of ‘Drones as a Service’ (DrAAS).
ii.The Production Linked Incentive scheme (PLI) of September 2021 provides up to 20% incentive to drone manufacturers, with an allocation of Rs 120 crore for 3 financial years. This is aligned with India’s aim of becoming a “global drone hub by 2030”.
iii.The DGFT issued an order prohibiting the import of drones in Completely-Built-Up (CBU), Semi-knocked-down (SKD) or Completely-Knocked-down (CKD) forms.
Exceptions for the Import of Drones
i.The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) provided the exceptions to import drones for Government & Educational institutes for R&D, defence and security with proper “due clearances” from DGFT.
ii.Also import of drone components will not require any prior approvals.
Drone Certification Scheme Rules
i.In August 2021, Ministry of Civil Aviation has notified ‘Drone Rules 2021’ replacing the United Aircraft Systems (UAS) rules.
ii.The Civil Aviation Ministry launched an airspace map of India, demarcating areas where drones can be used without permission and areas in which drones cannot be operated without obtaining prior permission from authorities.

Renault India partners CSC e-Governance Services to support PM Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan
Automaker Renault India has joined hands with CSC e-Governance Services (Common Service Centres) to support the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan (PMGDISHA), a programme aimed at providing digital literacy.
Aim behind this partnership:
- To digitally empower citizens in rural areas by training them to operate computers, laptops, browse the internet, access government websites, banking service and undertake digital payments.
- The aim of the program is to empower rural citizens in the age group of 14 to 60 years.
Key Points:
i.As a part of partnership, the company has handed over five cars to CSC e-Governance Services which will act as ‘Knowledge Repository on Wheels’ to upskill people in rural and semi-urban areas across India and help them develop financial and digital skills through information and knowledge.
ii.Through these cars, the VLEs (village-level entrepreneurs) will also spread awareness on the COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and protocols.
iii.It should be noted that CSC has a mandate of training 6 crore rural citizens in digital skills under the PMGDISHA.
iv.In 2021, Renault had partnered with CSC Grameen eStore, a subsidiary of CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd (CSC-SPV) to strengthen its rural presence.
India Blocks 54 Mobile Apps Over Security Threat, Privacy Risks
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY) issued interim directions to ban 54 mobile applications of which over 50 apps are from Chinese origin. The ban was recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA), as these apps pose a threat to India’s security. The 54 apps allegedly obtain various critical permissions and collect sensitive user data.
- The banned apps include Garena Free Fire; Beauty Camera: Sweet Selfie HD; Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade; Viva Video Editor; Tencent Xriver among others.
- Garena Free Fire is a Singapore-based app and the developer is not from China.
MeitY had banned the apps under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000 which empowers to issue directions for blocking for public access of any information through any computer resource.
- India has banned a total of 321 Chinese apps since May-June 2020
- Official list was not released yet, the number of apps banned and the country to which it belong will be clear only after official announcement by Meity.
India Sign MoU with WFP to Provide Wheat to Afghanistan via Pakistan
India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the United Nations(UN)’s World Food Programme (WFP) for the distribution of 50,000 MT of Wheat to Afghanistan as part of a humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan through the land bordered with Pakistan.
The shipments, eventually divided into 5 batches of 10,000 MT, will be taken to Afghanistan and handed over to WFP officials in Kandahar, Afghanistan, starting from February 22(after Punjab Elections – February 20).
- The agreement between India and WFP was announced by the Indian Embassy in Rome, Italy.
- Neena Malhotra, Ambassador of India to Italy, handed over the MoU for WFP to take charge of the wheat convoys when they reach Afghanistan.

Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar Co-chaired the 3rd India-Maldives Defence Cooperation Dialogue 2022 in Maldives
On 14th February 2022, Dr Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary of India co-chaired the 3rd India – Maldives Defence Cooperation Dialogue(DCD) 2022 in Maldives with Major General Abdulla Shamaal Chief of Defence Force (CDF) of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
He took part in the DCD during his visit to Maldives from 13th to 14th February 2022.
- Both India and Maldives focused on the joint efforts and capacity building measures to counter trans-national crimes and enhance security in the region.

The first DCD was held in July 2016 during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the 2nd Defence Cooperation Dialogue was held in January 2019.
Defence Secretary of India’s visit to Maldives:
i.Dr Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary of India visited Maldives for the discussions with the Maldives National Defence Force.
ii.During his visit, Dr Ajay Kumar hold a meeting with Mariya Didi, Minister of Defence of Maldives at the Ministry of Defence in Malé, Maldives and discussed on the immense and expanding India-Maldives defence cooperation in the past 3 years.
Highlights of the Visit:
i.Defence Secretary of India handed over 2800 Kgs of medical equipments to MNDF’s Senahiya Military Hospital.
ii.He also inaugurated the Composite Training Center Phase-I Annex in the Maldives, which was built with the support of India’s financial assistance.
iii.He also handed over the refitted Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee, a made in India Trinkat class patrol vessel.

Karur Vysya Bank (KVB) has partnered with the Chennai-based UNANU Technologies for digital freight finance to fund transport contractors using the end-to-end logistics technology platform.
- KVB is the first bank to introduce digital freight financing through a marketplace in the banking sector.
- UNANU has built the Freight Financing System within their suite of software platforms.
Highlights:
i.‘U-Turbo – a marketplace’, is the module, through which one can on-board logistics companies and shippers to Freight Financing programme.
ii.The technology platform will provide a complete flow of transactions from picking up the material from shipper (Proof of Pick up) until it reaches the destination (Proof of Delivery).
- Tracking of the truck is also provided with the associated software/hardware during the transit.

NSO Data: India’s Retail Inflation reached a 7-month high of 6.01% in January 2022
National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has released the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Base 2012=100 and corresponding Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for Rural (R), Urban (U) and Combined (C) for January 2022.
- As per the NSO data, the Retail inflation rate based on CPI has increased to a seven-month high of 6.01 percent in January 2022, crossing the 6 percent mark.
- Inflation Target– The government has directed RBI (Reserve Bank of India) to retain the medium-term target for CPI inflation of 4 percent within a band of +/- 2 percent (i.e. with the lower and upper tolerance levels of 2 percent and 6 percent).
Key Points:
i.The CPI inflation in December 2021 has been revised to 5.66 percent from 5.59 percent. The retail inflation in January 2021 was about 4.06 percent and the previous high CPI inflation was 6.26 percent in June 2021.
ii.As per the NSO data, the inflation in the food basket was 5.43 percent in January 2022 as against 4.05 percent in December 2021.
iii.The producers’ inflation, based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), decreased to 12.96 percent in January 2022 as against 13.56 percent in December 2021.

BHEL bags order to supply Compact Heat Exchanger sets for HAL’s Tejas Aircraft
On February 14, 2022, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has received an order from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to manufacture, assemble, test and supply compact heat exchanger sets for its 83 LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas MK1A aircrafts.
Key Points:
i.The BHEL’s Heavy Plates and Vessels Plant (HPVP), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) is the sole supplier of heat exchangers for LCA Tejas to HAL since 1996. These are augmented to meet International Aero Standards (AS9100).
ii.The BHEL-HPVP and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Bangalore (Karnataka) have jointly designed and developed 13 different types of compact heat exchangers for Environmental Control System (ECS) and Secondary Power System (SPS) of LCA MK-1 programme.
iii.BHEL is also currently working with DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) for the development of Air Cycle Machine based Liquid Cooling System (LCS) for Aircraft POD application for LCA MK-2.
iv.BHEL-HPVP has dedicated, intricate manufacturing and inspection facilities for manufacturing state-of-the-art Compact Heat Exchangers for different types of aircrafts manufactured by HAL.
Vedanta Signs Pact with Foxconn to Manufacture Semiconductors in India
Vedanta Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hon Hai Technology Group, electronics manufacturing services giant (also known as Foxconn) to form a joint venture (JV) for manufacturing semiconductors in India.
- This is a first of its kind joint venture which will support India’s vision to create an ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing in India.
- Vedanta has become the first company to announce investment in semiconductor manufacturing in India after the performance-linked incentive (PLI) policy.
- According to the MoU, Vedanta will hold the majority equity in the JV with vendantu’s chairman Anil Agarwal as the chairman of JV, while Foxconn will be the minority shareholder.
Highlights:
i.In December 2021, the Centre had cleared a performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for semiconductor and display board production at an investment of Rs 76,000 crore over the 5-6 years.
ii.India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was also announced recently with the aim to attract large investments for manufacturing facilities.
iii.The Hon Hai Technology Group is famous for making Apple’s iPhones and controls 40 percent of global electronic manufacturing. Recently, it raised a stake in its India subsidiary by spending $350 million.

i.In January 2022 the Vedanta Group had shared its intent to invest USD 15 billion for making displays and semiconductor chips in India over the coming five years.
ii.Vedanta Group will invest up to Rs 60,000 crore to set up a sophisticated chip and glass manufacturing ecosystem in India over the next three years.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been conducting the Financial Literacy Week (FLW) annually to propagate financial education messages on various themes among members of the public across the country.
- The FLW 2022 is conducted from 14th to 18th February 2022.
- The theme of FLW 2022 is “Go Digital, Go Secure”.
This theme is one of the strategic objectives of the National Strategy for Financial Education (NSFE) 2020-2025.
Note: FLW 2021 was observed from 8th February to 12th February 2021.
Background:
i.Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to annually observe one week as “Financial Literacy Week” to create awareness at a large scale on key topics every year.
ii.The first Financial Literacy Week was observed in 2016.

Gujarat Government Signs MoU with QX Global Group for Developing IT & ITeS
On 15th February 2022 the Gujarat government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with QX Global Group Limited, a global business process management company, for the holistic development of the Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITeS) sector in the State.
- MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, under the guidance of science and technology secretary Vijay Nehra by deputy director of science & technology on behalf of the state government and a Gujarat based representative of QX Global group Limited Sneha Patel
About the MoU:
i.The Gujarat government’s Department of Science and Technology had announced a new IT/ ITeS policy for the next 5 years in order to develop a robust ecosystem for the IT and digital sector. The policy also aims to increase Gujarat’s IT-ITeS exports from the current Rs 3,000 crore annually to Rs 25,000 crore over the next five years.
ii.The MoU is the 1st strategic partnership under the new Gujarat IT/ITeS policy 2022-2027and will generate 2,000 jobs in the IT sector.
