The United Nations(UN)’s World Space Week is annually observed across the globe from 4th to 10th October to commemorate contributions and achievements made in the field of space science and technology.
The week also recognizes and celebrates the historical role of women in space and aims to inspire the next generation of young girls to pursue their dreams in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and space.
The theme of World Space Week 2021 is “Women in Space” to create awareness of the issue of gender diversity in the space sector and identify the obstacles faced by women in entering space-related careers.
- Annually the theme of World Space Week was selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors in coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs.
Background:
The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/54/68 on 11th February 2000 and declared the week 4th to 10th October as the World Space Week.
The first-ever World Space Week was observed from 4th to 10th October 2000.
- The 4th October marks the date on which the first Human-made Earth Satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched in 1957.
- 10th October marks the day on which the treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of the States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the moon and other celestial bodies came into force in 1967.
Space4Women:
i.Space4Women is a project of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) to promote women’s empowerment in Space.
ii.The Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) ensures that the benefits of Space reach women and girls and that women and girls play an active and equal role in space science, technology, innovation and exploration.
UN and Space:
The UNOOSA in cooperation with the China Manned Space Agency launched the programme, to capitalize on the technological and innovative skills of the Government of China to benefit the members of the UN.
